Who has the best cheesesteak in Greensboro, North Carolina? We tried 15 cheesesteaks around Greensboro and the surrounding area to find out which local restaurant actually makes the best one.
15 cheesesteaks. 15 restaurants. 1 winner.
I’ve already tried 15 different cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, so going into this Greensboro food tour I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for. But I also wasn’t expecting every restaurant in Greensboro to make a true Philadelphia-style cheesesteak.
For this video, I’m judging these for what they are: steak and cheese sandwiches.
I’m looking at the meat, seasoning, cheese, toppings, bread, how everything is cooked, how well the sandwich holds together, how much food you actually get for the money and, most importantly, how it tastes.
We went all over Greensboro trying cheesesteaks from butcher shops, pizza places, Mediterranean restaurants, neighborhood grills, a gas station and a few places I never expected to become serious contenders.
The 15 places in this Greensboro cheesesteak tour are:
🥩 Battleground Butcher Bar 🥩 Mario’s Pizza 🥩 HomeSlice Pizza & Subs 🥩 Sarah’s Kabob Shop 🥩 Ghassan’s Fresh Mediterranean Eats 🥩 Vito’s Italian Restaurant 🥩 Tony’s Food Mart 🥩 Moe’s Pizza & Subs II 🥩 Palermo Pizza on Market Street 🥩 Fox Oven & Grill on Groometown Road 🥩 New York Pizza on Tate Street 🥩 The Podium near the Palladium 🥩 Elizabeth’s Pizza on Lawndale 🥩 Slices by Tony 🥩 Dear Dad’s on Battleground Avenue
This tour was all over the place.
Some sandwiches had great meat but disappointing bread.
Some had plenty of toppings but barely enough meat.
Some had really good flavor but weren’t something I would drive across Greensboro to get again.
And several restaurants called their sandwich a Philly cheesesteak even though what they served was nothing like the cheesesteaks I’ve eaten in Philadelphia.
Then we started finding some real contenders.
Vito’s became one of the first places that really stood out. It had plenty of meat, good flavor and finally felt like we had found something that could compete for the top spot.
Elizabeth’s Pizza on Lawndale came in loaded with meat, properly seasoned steak, good cheese, fresh toppings and one of the better rolls of the entire tour.
Slices by Tony was another surprise. They use fresh toppings including mushrooms and tri-color bell peppers, and they make the bread for the sandwich from their homemade pizza dough. That one finished with a 9.1 out of 10.
At that point, I thought we had pretty much figured out who was at the top.
Then I found one more restaurant.
Dear Dad’s.
I didn’t even realize Dear Dad’s made a steak and cheese until after I thought this tour was basically finished, so we made one final stop.
That completely changed the ranking.
Dear Dad’s earned a 9.5 out of 10 and became the highest-rated steak and cheese out of all 15 places we tried.
So after eating our way across Greensboro, we finally had one winner.
Now, is it exactly like a cheesesteak from Philadelphia?
No.
After trying 15 cheesesteaks in Philadelphia and another 15 around Greensboro, I still haven’t found anything here that I would say is exactly the same as a true Philly cheesesteak.
But Greensboro definitely has some really good steak and cheese sandwiches.
If you want to see what I’m comparing these to, check out my Philadelphia cheesesteak tour where I tried 15 different cheesesteaks in Philly.
And if there is a Greensboro cheesesteak that somehow didn’t make this list, put it in the comments. If enough people tell me about one, you already know I’ll go try it.
We’re always looking for great local food throughout Greensboro and the surrounding Piedmont Triad, including High Point, Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Burlington, Jamestown, Gibsonville, Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Whitsett, Mebane and Graham.

we are all over Greensboro today trying to find
the best cheesesteak in the city now i've had 15
cheesesteaks in Philadelphia
so i already know most of these probably aren't going to be true
philly cheesesteaks but that doesn't mean they can't
be really good steak and cheeses we got
a bunch of places to hit a few i've never tried before
by the end of this video we're going to
rank every one of them and see who actually has
the best cheesesteak in Greensboro you know what
we do feel me repeat let's go find something tasty to eat
so we are at a new place on Battleground
called the Butcher Box and we're going to try their steak
and cheese out so all this meat
looks like they cut it
and butcher it in-house this is pretty awesome looking there the
cheese is melted on it nice
and juicy meat you can see that ribeye let's see if it's any good
got the sesame seeds on the bun that is really good being
that i've had 15 phillies in Philadelphia
it is definitely not a philly cheesesteak
but it is a damn good cheesesteak though
i'm not the biggest provolone cheese fan like
the cheese itself isn't as cheesy as i've wanted on
the steak and cheese
but that ribeye meat is phenomenal you can see that meat itself
it's nice juicy looking that's a good cut of meat it is really good
but i just again wouldn't call
this like a classic steak and cheese it is delicious
though so i think i'm gonna go
i'm gonna say eight six like i'd like to have
this that ribeye like it's an actual ribeye
steak sandwich i was going to try pyramid eats right here
and it says that on monday they're
from 10 to 10 and it's monday and it's not 10 p.m at night
so i don't know what's going on here
but this is where monks used to be so i gave them
a try i tried to give them a try next up on this
cheesesteak tour we are at mario's on windover
and this is what they're calling a philly cheesesteak
which i am not seeing the philly part to it it
is falling all apart i don't know what kind of cheese
that is but it's got bell peppers
and onions on it i ain't never seen bell peppers on a philly
cheese steak. It is hot. It is extremely hot.
It is really good. I've never seen bell peppers like
I was saying on a Philly cheese steak.
The cheese is not all over the place, but it does taste good
and you do taste the cheese in the two bites I took.
The onions are great. It is definitely the
ribeye that comes in the box frozen, which is always good tasting.
It's just not the best it
could be. The bread is crispy on the ends right here.
The flavor is fantastic, but I would not
call something a philly that is nothing like
an actual philly cheesesteak that's kind of weird to
me but overall i would probably give this about
a eight four looks good steak and cheese just not
the best in the world the bread is awesome solid bread
not bad would get again just probably not
going to be the best all right i don't know where
we're going next i think i'm gonna head over to the
international market i found out there's
a place called rico's they're supposed to have a good
cheesesteak so we're gonna go try there what
do you think about this cheesesteak it does remind
me of the first time i ever ate a cheesesteak
but i would say it's one through 10
it's probably an 8.9
What do you think about the cheesesteak?
a 9.8
9.8?
You always go high.
Good.
I will say one last thing I forgot to talk about
is the green peppers are a little undercooked.
next up, finding the best cheesesteak in Greensboro
we are at Home Slice over here
off of Friendly Avenue in Guilford College.
that was a good cheese pull right there
good chunky meat right here looks like
that frozen meat again as you get from faros let's give it a
bite give it a try oh actually i didn't go over
the insides it has green peppers and onions on it
green peppers are definitely more cooked here than they
were at mario's that is a good sign
i don't need raw green peppers on my second cheese
the cheese is laid on top and not mixed in
look at this gracious oh hot too you can see
the steam coming up man i even ordered a slice of
cheese completely reviewed it before we even started
this one trying to give this time to
cool down i think it's piping i mean it tastes like salt
and pepper on the steak it looks like a sea
pepper like a flake well i pulled it off
of the onion i'm not tasting it because that meat by
itself looks a little like stickles okay there's salt
and pepper on it this is just okay the bread
is very pillowy there is not like a crunch to it
if you can look inside there it's not very golden
in a brown like it's barely toasted this doesn't make
a yuck at best i don't want to trash this
place but their steak and cheese is not something
to write home about i'm probably going to go 5-8
on this guy it's okay jams deli is right across the street
so i'm gonna go see if they have one
well i know i said i was going to go to jams
but of course in my luck they are not just closed on
mondays they're close on this one particular monday i happen
to be here next up we are here
at Cyrus Kabob Shop. I haven't ate here in a long time.
They've had to be in this building
for a while. And the last time I ate here, it was not in this building.
Last time I was in this
building, I was here for a Halloween costume contest.
It was Cooper's Halloween, which I
ended up losing. Got it in second place.
I'm kind of disappointed in that. I did Edward Scissorhands.
I'll put that up on the screen now.
And I also just got it made a robot suit out of vacuum cleaner
parts. That's a pretty good steak and cheese.
Reminds me of your song. Not the best thing I've
ever had but it's pretty decent it's just like an average steak
and cheese so far nothing has
wowed me with steak and cheese I don't know
if I've been ruined by doing the Philly steak and
cheese tours but it's kind of tiny too like you got another half
but like I've only taken two
three bites I think out of this total
and I'm looking at like maybe two or three more bites
in this whole thing whole half of it is gone I got an oil
and vinegar something another on it
oh wow there's no meat in there no wonder I
was like I'm not tasting the meat I guess and
everything there's some mushrooms like for real
that's crazy there's just toppings right there
and right here in my plate it's nothing
but mushrooms and toppings maybe i'm not liking it
because there's no meat on that side it
was unwrapped the other half oh wow this side's
actually cake and mayonnaise maybe i should they cut it
not evenly with one part and there's no
meat on that side all right round two i'm
not gonna say the meat stepped that up let me get
of that meat by itself here we'll just like
for real there's barely any meat in this thing i got
one chunk right here with some cheese let's get
that out let's taste the meat by itself it tastes
like ribeye meat with no salt or pepper
or anything on it yeah so without their mayonnaise
it's extremely messy without their mayonnaise and oil
and vinegar type flavor there's nothing to it
outside of that the bread is average the meat
is not seasoned it seems like all the flavor
it's in that oil and vinegar that's on the lettuce
so without getting a bite of
the lettuce there's not a lot of flavor in it
i remember really liking this place man this thing is falling apart
there's enough mayonnaise to float out
of here on it that sucks because i
really was hoping this was going to be a good
one because i remember eating here in this place being really
tasty and today it is not and this is what they're serving
for second cheeses
they are not up there on the list i'm probably going to go
i'm highly disappointed in this one it's not terrible
i'm going five four that gets
a five four overall let's see where we get ah let's just see where
we're going next just to get a look at this table
this is all the stuff that was falling off of it
like it's it doesn't hold together very well
is what i'm getting at next up we are here at
Cassans over at Golden Gate Shopping Center
there's actually some meat on this one it's
all throughout looks like it's just onions lettuce meat i know they put
that oil and vinegar with
their special blend of seasonings on theirs i've never
been a huge fan of this one out of what we
We tried so far though, this is by far the best
because they've been pretty terrible so far.
That's how.
Mario's was okay.
The seasoning on this is amazing.
Like their house blend is always good.
If you've ever had like their little salad mix
that comes with a lot of their different things
that has that oil and vinegar in that seasoning mix,
it is really good.
They're throwing fries at me.
I've always thought their meat is a little weird.
And even though I like it finely chopped up like this,
it's always had like this, I don't know,
some kind of texture to it that I'm not a huge fan of.
But it is good out of what we had so far.
I think this is why I'm gonna rank this one as high as I do.
I'm going 8.2 on this guy.
There's nothing wrong with it. I just wish it
was more meaty flavored, I guess, is what I'm looking
for. Well, the next place we're going,
I absolutely will know that it will be the next place. It's
right across the street. We're going to Golden Pizzas
and Subs. Their french fries, though,
are those crunchy looking french fries
like I was getting in DC everywhere.
There's no salt on them, and they're not as crunchy
as they look like it. What did you rank it? 7.7
out of Bud, you ain't even tried yours yet. Thank you, Mimi
that was nice of you
what do you think? 8.7 out
of Mimi, you ranked it at 8.7
and you don't like it
now one thing i've always wondered
because like i just said this fry doesn't have any seasoning on
it, there's like Elizabeth's doesn't put salt
on their fries, this place don't put salt on their
fries, like what is with these restaurants
that deep fry french fries and don't put salt on them
Well, I was going to try Golden Pizzas and Subs steak and cheese,
but apparently they closed two months ago
Next up we are here at Vito's Italian restaurant
in Golden Gate Shopping Center
After the Golden Pizzas and Subs was closed. This is awesome
Can you see the amount of meat on that?
Like I finally think I got a steak
and cheese in my hand that I'm gonna like. Oh my goodness
Let's give this guy a try. Oh my god.
That's a good steak and cheese
It's about time I found one I like. You see that?
the steam, the amount of meat cheese all over it they
do they do, do they put the cheese on top
i like mine like mixed in a little more
but they ain't nothing to fall them over the bread is super
crispy, good and flaky on the outside nice
and pillowy on the inside the toppings are cooked
properly jesus i can't talk today the toppings
are cooked properly no raw green peppers in this
guy man the grease from the meat is mixing with that cheese
and giving that excellent flavor that
it gets when it does that i love that i don't want
to go too high with the ranking on this one
it's because it's been so much better than
the rest of half the bar they've all been so
mediocre ma'am i'm gonna go it's gonna make it
in the nines for sure um one more taste test
try that meat by itself that cheese has had enough time
to melt it's got down in there
on everything look at that steam
coming it's hard to hold this it's so warm i think a little more
salt and pepper on it when you're cooking it would
be about the only thing you can do to make this
better. I'm going 9.2. That was good.
Mimi says it's 10 out of 10.
Man, that's awesome. If you're
in this area, you're trying to decide where to go
and you've seen the other places I've been,
this is a good one. Definitely come here.
I know a lot of you have actually said I need to come
here and try their pizza too.
They only do full pizzas and we don't have time to do that today,
but I will be back to try their pizza.
Like this place is awesome. And I saw a few of the dishes
of other people eating around us
and their Italian dishes look amazing. We're at Tony's
up at 68 which is a little grill there
is not a whole lot of meat on this guy with some onions
i found a forum online that basically said
that this place had the closest thing to a Philly
cheesesteak in Greensboro
and i am not believing that by looking at it let's see looks can be
deceiving because it is good being there's
not a whole lot of meat cheese or onion anything
he looked at me like i was crazy too when i told him
because like it says philly cheese uh chicken
steak on there but it just says cheesesteak i was like
so this is like a philly cheesesteak and he
was like yeah and i was like i'll take it whiz whiz
and he looked at me like it's crazy well
obviously you don't know what cheese
a philly cheesesteak is so this is nothing like a philly
cheesesteak at all and then
when i ordered it a whiz whiz he's like just the onions and i was like
yeah that's kind of how they serve it it's just cheese
and onions but it is really good tasting
the bun has definitely got a lot of butter
on it i can actually see like you get down in there
you can see where he put some i don't know
if you can see there but there's butter that they
put on it and put it on the grill it's falling apart
on me for the amount of food you're getting
on the bun for ten dollars i don't think it's really worth
the price it is decent tasting though
but i would not even come close to saying
that this is like a philly cheesesteak
i'm going to go probably a seven two yeah seven two
on this guy it does taste good next up we are
but back at Moe's, it's not looking that meaty either.
Like people are being skimpy on the meat these days.
There's maybe a lettuce tomato on this guy.
I don't know if they have a little bit of salt and pepper
or anything like that on it yet.
It's all right.
It's good.
There's nothing to go out your way to get.
The edge is crust, like crispy, not crusty.
It is a crust.
The meat doesn't really have like a charred to it
or anything like that,
but it just tastes like it's been cooked for a while.
The meat by itself has a good flavor to it.
It just tastes like a, not a very good quality.
Not that it's a bad quality,
it's just not like high-end or anything like that.
It's about average.
I'd probably go, hmm, seven flat.
The bread's average, the meat's average.
The flavor's a little bit above average,
so a good seven for that one.
And that'll be all I got to say about mine.
Next up for the steak and cheese tour,
we're at Fox Oven Grill here on Groomtown Road,
just off of High Point Road, or Gay City Boulevard,
for me to remember to call it that the steak it's
not finely chopped it's kind of like long but it
is very thin it's got tomatoes lettuce tomatoes
we got green peppers got some caramelized onions
on this guy you're not seeing any mushrooms anywhere there it
is there it is it's canned
mushrooms on this guy let's see what it tastes like
that's a lot better than i expected it to
taste with what it looked like got a good little crisp
on some of the meat it's super thin though
I'd say 6.6. Killian's already out the gates with a 6.6.
The bread is good and crunchy on the outside
and then doughy in the center. It's not a whole lot of bread to it.
It is a decent ratio of the items
like meat, the cheese, the bread.
It's not my favorite bread in the world but it is pretty good.
I would not say this is the best one we've had
so far but it's decent. It's probably about an
average. I would probably go about a seven.
I'll probably go seven flat on this guy. It's good
enough to come and grab one
and go out your way to get one on this side of town if you're not from
this side probably not just stick to something you know better
on your side of town but if you live
on this side of town it's a good place to come grab one not bad
so what does mimi rate it well
then try it so what do you say 6.3 6.3 out
of mimi what did you say Kalia 6.6 next up we're here
at palermo on market street get a good look
at that guy it seems to be like the same kind of
Bread is getting everywhere.
Canned mushrooms, some steak on it, some onions.
The green peppers do look raw.
So let's give this guy a try, see what it tastes like.
It's got some mayonnaise on it.
It came with chips.
I have some kind of seasoning on it.
That's got a really interesting flavor.
It's actually really good.
Its onions are sautéed in something also.
Like, that is an interesting flavor.
It's got some kind of like, I don't know,
like Mediterranean kind of flavor to it.
That is really good.
I wish the bread was the best.
It's like everybody's getting the bread from the same place.
probably are. Fresh mushrooms and a better bread
and this would be on up there. I like the flavor
on it. The meat is super thinly cut
and it's got a lot of those thin grilled onions in it. The green
peppers that they didn't look cooked.
I'm not noticing like a huge raw flavor to them. That's
pretty good. That meat is finely chopped up.
That's pretty good. I'm going 8.5 on this guy.
Not a bad sub. Would come again.
Let's figure out where we're going next. This next place is
technically not in Greensboro.
It's at the Palladium here, right on the outside of Greensboro.
It's nice and meaty. Cheese, green peppers, onions.
I do not see the mushrooms, but let's
give it a try. The bread feels a little stiff.
It's got the grittiness on the bottom of it.
So for the bread, it's just something about
the bread they're using around Greensboro. I'm not
digging most of the places we're going to.
The steak is well seasoned. Everything about it's
great, except for that I just don't like the bread.
The meat will keep it from going too far
down the bread i'm just not happy
with i'm probably going to go with six three on this guy
it's all right it's not something to like go seek out
but it's not bad if you're here someone in the
comments mentioned this Smoky Bones right here did a brisket steak
and cheese and unfortunately
as you can see the grass is growing up
and the doors are boarded shut so there's that won't be
trying this place all right we're here
at New York Pizza taking a look at their steak and cheese we
We got a lot of meat on this guy,
the onions, peppers, mushrooms.
Look at the nice lettuce and tomato.
The bread is a little, got the grain on the bottom.
That's got a good crunch to it.
It's a pretty solid steak and cheese.
I like the bread on this one.
I think you could use a little more salt on it,
but other than that, it's a solid steak and cheese.
I'm gonna go probably about an eight, six on this guy.
I love a good steak and cheese.
All right, I think next up,
we're gonna head over to Elizabeth's Pizza on Lawndale,
and that will wrap up our steak and cheese tour,
so I'll catch you there.
All right, back at Elizabeth's Pizza.
Check out this steak and cheese.
Nice and meaty.
That one has got a lot, a lot of meat on it.
That's probably the second closest to,
I think that was Vito's we went to.
It was real meaty like this.
Ooh, let's give this guy a try.
Again, it's gonna be the tomatoes, lettuce,
onions, peppers, mushrooms.
That bread is nice and toasty.
That's awesome.
You can see where it sat on like a wire when it was baked.
It's a nice roll.
Hmm, that is good.
is salt, like it's actually seasoned properly.
Toppings are great.
Cheese has got a strong flavor in it.
You can see on top of it,
it's got a good amount of cheese on top of these guys.
But as you can see,
there's a lot of cheese right here on top of it.
That is a good amount of cheese
on top of this thickened cheese.
The bread is great.
The meat is seasoned properly.
The green peppers are fresh.
Looking here, the onions are caramelized.
Mushrooms are all right.
I love your right steak and cheese.
I think it's right on par with Vito's,
which has been my favorite so far,
and this being the last one I'm going to try,
I'm going to say this is a tie.
I'm going 9-2.
I'm pretty sure I rated Vito's 9-2.
I'm going to go Elizabeth's on Lawndale
and Vito's at Golden Gate Shopping Center.
Tied for the number one spot
of best cheese steak in Greensboro.
You looking for a good one?
This is it.
If you're looking for a Philly steak,
I never found anything close to what I've had in Philly.
And if you haven't seen my videos on Philly,
I have tried 15 different famous Philly places
in Philadelphia.
link that video right here wherever it pops up it'll
be somewhere here at the top there'll be
a card for you to click on to go to that video
and we'll catch you in the next one i had a little
microphone issue with slices by tony
when i was recording this so instead of scrapping this one
because it is a really good cheesesteak i wanted
to do a voiceover on this one this one ended up
being one of the better steak
and cheeses of the whole tour right away one of the biggest things
that stood out to me was how fresh everything
tasted they used fresh mushrooms onions and
tri-color bell peppers and i really like that they
are using more than just the standard green
peppers you see at a lot of places those peppers add
a little sweetness a little more flavor and
they make the whole sandwich taste fresher overall toppings
were cooked really well too nothing was
raw nothing was overcooked
and everything still had enough texture in it that you could actually
tell the vegetables were fresh another thing
that really separates this one from a lot of the other
places we tried is the bread they make
their bread themselves using their homemade pizza dough and
that makes a big difference the bread has a nice chew
to it it has a little bit of a crisp on the
outside and it actually has some flavor
of its own instead of just being something to hold
everything together. Because it is made from their pizza dough,
it gives the sandwich a little bit of
a different feel than a traditional cheesesteak roll,
but in a good way. The meat itself had
really good flavor. There was a good amount of it
and the cheese worked really well with the steak
and all of these fresh toppings.
Nothing really overpowered anything else. You still get the
flavor from the meat, you get the cheese,
you get the peppers and the mushrooms, and then that
homemade bread kind of brings everything together.
It was one of those sandwiches that seemed to get
better the more I ate it. The first bite was good
but once you start getting everything together in
the same bite that is where it really starts to work.
This is not really what I would call a
traditional Philly cheesesteak but as a steak
and cheese sandwich this was easily one of the better
ones I had on this tour. Fresh toppings,
really good bread, good flavor on the meat and everything
worked well together. I'm giving Slices by Tony a 9.1 out of 10.
That wraps up the cheesesteak tour
and based on everything we tried Vito's
and Elizabeth's on Lawndale are tied for the number
one spot but i forgot about one more place i found another restaurant
that i didn't even know did
steak and cheeses and since we're already this deep
into the tour we might as well give it a try
so before i call this thing finished let's head over to dear dad's
and see what they got all right
we are here at dear dad's trying out their steak
and cheese we got green peppers onions mushrooms
and some of that ribeye steak meat on it this is a nice big
and meaty one let's give this guy a try
actually let me show the meat to you like it's
not your typical chopped up ribeye it's like actual
like steak chunks in this guy that looks pretty awesome
that is a big amount of meat that's like
eating a rib-eye steak sandwich that is really good
the cheese on that's amazing the bread on
it's amazing this is a great steak
and cheese that right there that's probably going to be
about a 9.4 9.5 i'm probably going to 9.5 on that like
that's really good come by here and check
that out for sure but man this is a great steak
and cheese i think the only thing that would make
this better if i'm not crazy over the bread it's good bread
but it's not the best bread i've ever
had for a second piece. Flavorless though for the meat,
the vegetables, and everything else on this
guy. That is a spot on. It's about as good
as it gets other than the bread. The bread's not bad,
it's just not my favorite. I forgot to say one thing.
I'm going to take the ratings from all of
them, add them all up, and put it down
in the comments down below. So if you want to know the
rankings and the listing of how each one went,
it'll be down in the comments right here. So go
check that out.
