The Pentagon has instructed US Central Command to complete preparations for a possible resumption of large-scale military action against Iran. American officials told Axios journalist Barak Ravid about this. US President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision on launching a new operation. The Pentagon's order also does not specify a specific timeframe. However, American and Israeli sources admit that the strike could occur before the US midterm elections or even before the Israeli elections.
If war resumes, the US military may focus on massive strikes against Iran's energy infrastructure, industrial, and nuclear facilities. According to Maariv, Tehran is already taking steps to prepare for a possible attack.
The Pentagon told Axios that the department is developing military options and presenting them to the president for a decision.
The White House, however, emphasizes that Trump is preserving all possible options. An administration spokesperson stated that the United States is in a strong position, controlling the Strait of Hormuz, while the Iranian economy is experiencing serious problems. He stated that events could unfold in one of two ways—"easy or difficult," and the final decision will be made taking into account U.S. interests.
Last week, Trump's national security team held a multi-hour meeting at Camp David. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the meeting focused on long-term foreign policy planning. However, an Israeli official said part of the meeting was devoted to the possible resumption of hostilities against Iran. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts have reached a dead end. Qatari mediators are still awaiting Tehran's response to the American counterproposal, which calls for Iranian nuclear concessions.
Against this backdrop, Trump spoke again by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The American side reported that the leaders discussed the memory and respect for the victims of the October 7 massacre. The conversation took place after Netanyahu assembled his national security team to discuss the situation surrounding Iran.
Israeli officials believe that in the event of a new conflict, the US and Israel will closely coordinate their actions, including the IDF. However, Israel fears a retaliatory strike from Iran. Sources estimate that Tehran could launch hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel if hostilities resume.
The Israeli official described the likelihood of an operation beginning before the elections as low, although he did not completely rule out such a scenario. He added that the likelihood of a new conflict could increase after the US midterm elections.
A resumption of hostilities could also impact the Israeli election campaign. A new escalation or the imposition of a state of emergency could change the political agenda ahead of the elections.
