Frank Lennon - Photographs.

Frank Lennon (1927–2006) was a Canadian photojournalist whose career was closely associated with the Toronto Star, where he worked for approximately forty-seven years, retiring in 1990. He was born on 26 January 1927 in Toronto and joined the newspaper in 1944, initially working in non-photographic roles before moving into image production as the paper expanded its in-house photography staff. His transition into photography occurred through technical positions such as wire photo receiving, leading to full-time assignment work by the late 1950s.
Lennon’s work covered a broad range of assignments including news, politics, sport, and feature photography across Canada and internationally. He is most closely associated with his photograph of Paul Henderson taken on 28 September 1972 during the Summit Series in Moscow, capturing the moment immediately following the winning goal against the Soviet Union. The image received the Canadian Press Picture of the Year and a National Newspaper Award and was later reproduced in books, stamps, and commemorative materials. Beyond this image, Lennon photographed political figures, cultural personalities, and major public events as part of daily newspaper production.
He continued working at the Toronto Star until his retirement in 1990, producing a sustained body of press photography documenting post-war Canadian public life. His archive includes decades of negatives and prints generated through routine and major assignments within the newspaper system. Lennon died on 22 August 2006 in Toronto at the age of 79, and his work is preserved in Canadian institutional collections including Library and Archives Canada, where it forms part of the historical record of twentieth-century Canadian photojournalism.
