Huish is a small historic village in Wiltshire, situated on the northern edge of the Vale of Pewsey, around two miles northwest of Pewsey and four miles southwest of Marlborough.
Despite its small size, Huish has a history stretching back more than 900 years. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it consisted of just 11 households.
The surrounding landscape has been occupied for much longer. Archaeological discoveries have revealed evidence of early settlements around Huish Hill, including activity during the Romano British period.
For centuries, Huish was an agricultural community, with the surrounding land used for growing wheat, barley and oats. The steep slopes of Huish Hill were less suitable for cultivation, helping to preserve the open downland landscape that surrounds the village today.
Interestingly, Huish was once part of the vast Savernake Forest until 1330. Over the centuries, much of the woodland disappeared as land was cleared for farming.
One of the village's historic landmarks is St Nicholas Church. An earlier medieval church stood here, with foundations dating back to the 13th century. The church was rebuilt in 1785 and again in the late 19th century.
Huish was once made up of several small settlements scattered across the surrounding hills. One of these, on Huish Hill, gradually disappeared during the 20th century, leaving traces of a much older rural landscape.
