Autumn is starting to make an appearance in the English countryside.
Westwell is a tiny village in West Oxfordshire, situated approximately two miles southwest of Burford, close to the Gloucestershire border. It is considered the westernmost village in Oxfordshire and its name is traditionally associated with the most westerly well in the county.
The village appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, when the manor was held by Walter, son of Poyntz. At the time, the settlement was largely agricultural, with land worked by villagers and smallholders.
One of Westwell's most interesting buildings is the Church of St Mary, which dates back to the 12th century. The church still retains features from its Norman origins, while its chancel was developed during the 13th century. Later additions include the medieval south porch and a Victorian bell turret.
The village is also home to Westwell Manor, an impressive historic house whose earliest surviving parts date from the 16th century. Over the following centuries, the building was enlarged and altered, reflecting the changing fortunes of its owners.
Near the manor stands a 17th-century dovecote, another reminder of Westwell's agricultural past.
At the heart of Westwell is a small village pond, surrounded by traditional Cotswold stone cottages. Nearby stands an unusual war memorial commemorating those who served during the First World War.
The memorial contains a numeral taken from the clock face of the Cloth Hall in Ypres, Belgium, connecting this quiet Oxfordshire village with the battlefields of the Western Front.
