In 1952 someone removed a boulder from Karlu Karlu and used it to mark a grave in Alice Springs. It took 47 years of negotiation to get it back. That is the short version of what this place has been through since European contact. The longer version starts 1.7 billion years ago, when the granite that makes up these boulders first solidified from magma deep underground, before multicellular life existed anywhere on Earth. The formations you can photograph from the car park are some of the oldest exposed rock in the country, shaped by processes still actively working on them today, sitting inside one of the oldest registered sacred sites in the world. This is what scientists have actually found at Australia's Devils Marbles.
