Breaking news in Santa Clarita, fast-moving wildfire erupts,
forcing evacuations, and putting homes in danger.
Fox 11's Matthew Seedorf is at the scene
with the very latest on conditions there.
Inside the burn zone tonight, there are still some hot spots,
but also a welcome sight as there's a light mist falling
and firefighters get the upper hand.
An urgent firefight underway outside Santa Clarita.
Firefighters in the air
and on the ground trying to box in the relentless wind-driven blaze.
This wind is blowing tremendously high right now.
The flames Sunday afternoon growing at a dangerous rate,
more than 170 acres in about an hour.
Picture all of this being a wall of fire.
Several homes barely out of dodge.
How close did it get to your house?
Feet.
The flames were leaping up on my property,
had a lot of trees that were on fire.
This fire exploding in very dry conditions despite what
was Tropical Storm Rachel.
Rachel's remnants flooding streets
and battering the Long Beach coast in South L.A. County,
while northern parts of the county remain dry and windy.
What tropical storm? The only tropical storm I saw
was on the applications on the phone, the apps.
I didn't see anything coming down.
No, no rain. None. None. This would have been a whole different story.
I remember very well the
sand fire. We lost 18 homes. We lost one life in that fire.
And so I appreciate everybody coming
out and doing their best to prevent that.
Firefighters trying to work ahead of the flames
to build containment lines, chainsaws on the ground,
and helicopter drops from the air.
Evacuation orders and warnings downgraded Sunday night to advisories
as firefighters gain the upper hand.
The experts behind me, above me,
and on the ground are just absolutely amazing.
I wasn't sure I was going to have the house to come home to.
So again, we are seeing these hot spots within the burn zone,
but firefighters are hoping
that this little bit of mist helps overnight.
Containment right now is at 68%.
