Jai Srimannarayana,
God had sent three persons as his representation, mother, father and
guru or teacher.
As they are equal to God,
the class which we have to use to our mother is Matru Devo
Bhava, to father is Pitru Devo Bhava
and to guru as Acharya Devo Bhava and take their
blessings, consider them as God.
The first priority is given to mother.
She bears a baby for nine months.
The food which she eats helps for the growth of the baby in her womb.
After giving birth to the baby,
she turns the blood into milk and feeds during his infancy.
Mother is the first guru of the child.
She is not only the personification of love and affection.
She makes her lap as the child's first school since
the baby learns everything from mother.
Not only physical resemblance but also she postpones her samskaras
or culture in the mind of her baby.
The child learns how to walk,
how to talk and how to behave from his or her mother.
A mother sacrifices her entire life for the physical
and mental growth of her child at the beginning stage.
Same love and care is shown in all birds and animals.
We all are indebted to mothers and can't repay them.
But one thing we can do to our mother by making ourselves
to tune according to her noble wishes and take her blessings
which may enable us to reach even blissful eternal world.
Jai Srimannarayana.
In this regard, we must know the story of Vinataya.
Once there was a king named Kashyapa Prajapati
who had two wives named Kadruva and Venata.
They both served their husband thousands of years.
He was very much pleased with their services
and asked what gifts they wanted from him.
Kadruva asked for thousand strong sons with divinity
and Vinata asked for only two sons stronger than
those of his second wife.
Kadru gave birth to thousand eggs
and at the time of maturity and after 500 years,
they broke and came snakes named Sesha,
Vasuki, Takshaka and Karkotaka and so on.
On the other hand, Vinata gave birth to two eggs.
Even after 500 years, they did not come to hatch the egg.
Feeling anxious, she broke one egg.
The egg should be broken naturally.
since she broke it forcibly the baby inside had
not developed eggs. His name was Arun. He was so
angry with his mother responsible to his handicap
and cursed that she would be a slave to his
stepmother Kadruva. Later he realized his mistake,
apologized for what he had said to his mother
and then said you be careful at least with the second one.
Let it be broken naturally so that
you would get a strong
and healthy son who would relieve you from my curse.
Saying so, Arun became charioteer of the sun god
and disappeared into the sky.
The reddishness or brightness
which we see in the sky before the sunrise
is nothing but the presence of Arun.
That is why this morning at dawn is called Arunodaya.
Few more years passed on and the second egg broke naturally
and came an eagle named Garuda, Garutmanta.
He being son of Vinatha, also called Vinataya.
One evening, both the sisters, Kadruva and Vinatha,
went to seashore to take bath.
They found a beautiful white horse, belonged to Indra.
Though it was completely white, Kadruva said,
Sister, did you see the horse?
Though it is completely white, its tail is black.
No, no, no, even its tail is white, said Vinatha.
Both started arguing and came to a conclusion.
Padrava challenged,
If my words are true, you be my servant and what you said is correct,
I will be your slave.
When Vinatha was about to move towards the house, Kadruva suggested,
It being dark, tomorrow morning we can come
and see whose words are correct.
Then both the sisters slept.
Padrava narrated about their challenges with her sons.
With her evil nature, asked her sons to turn around
the tail of the horse so that it would appear as black.
When other sons of her disagreed,
one of her sons agreed and obeyed what she said.
As suggested, both of them went to the seashore.
Vinata was shocked to see the tail appear black in color.
Without knowing sister's conspiracy,
agreed to be the servant while Vinataya was growing up
and also serving his stepmother along with his mother.
He felt sad about the situation of his mother
and asked the reason about her slavery to her sister.
She explained everything.
When he asked about the solution, she said,
you being my son, you can only relieve me from this curse.
Then Vinataya decided to fulfill mother's wish.
He went directly to Kadruva to ask what
to be done to relieve his mother from slavery.
She asked for the container of amrut from Indra's palace.
He being strong enough could fly to his palace.
But how could he reach there?
When his mother suggested him to take the advice of his father,
he went to Kasyaprajapati, asked his advice.
His father told him the way how to reach there.
He also suggested him to eat kulandas,
who are a medicine troubling everyone.
On his way, Vainateya found them, ate them,
but his hunger was not fulfilled.
Again he came back to his father and told the same.
Father suggested him that he would find an elephant and a tortoise near
the seashore and he could fulfill his hunger eating them.
Garutmanta reached there, caught hold of them amidst of his class
and also ready to land on a mountain where he found
some monkeys meditating upside down holding the branches.
Garuda felt they fell from the branches due
to the force of landing he would be caused by them.
Thinking so, holding those branches very carefully with his beak
and the elephant and the tortoise with his claws,
again came back to his father Kasyaprajapati.
His father requested Munis to leave the branches and they left.
On being suggested by his father, he too left the branches
on the mountains, ate food and finally reached Indra's abode.
He found a glittering vessel containing Amrita.
He held that with his beak and when he was about to fly,
Indra threw his Vajra pointing at Garuda.
It too proved powerless compared to the power of Garuda.
It fell on his feet.
Incapable of doing anything,
all Devatas reached Sriman Narayana and prayed him.
The Lord appeared in front of Vainateya.
At first, he prayed his mother and fell on the feet of the Lord.
Narayana appreciated Vainateya's love towards his mother and said,
First you go and relieve your mother from slavery.
Then come to me and be my permanent vehicle and get immortality.
Following the Lord's instructions,
kept the container on the sacred pieces of wood
and demanded Kadru to leave his mother
and also expressed his gratitude for giving him
the chance to serve his mother in that way.
All the snakes, the sons of Kadru,
went to the river to take bath before taking Amrit.
Meanwhile, Indra took it back.
Feeling disappointed,
they licked the sanctified wood,
thinking there might be some amrut fallen. Due to the sharpness
of darbas, their tongues were split into two parts.
Due to the touch of the container,
those darbas were sanctified.
In that way, Garuda is honored along with the Lord
for what he had done to his mother.
Thank you.
Jai Srimannarayana.
