AI GeneratedThe discussion focuses on critical coaching failures and poor situational awareness in two recent NFL games. The analysts critique Dan Quinn and the Washington staff for a disastrous clock management sequence and condemn the Philadelphia Eagles' special teams for a catastrophic kickoff decision that cost them the game.
Let's go back to that mess there in Washington.
Boy, that thing was just, how do you not know where you
are on the field if you're the quarterback?
And Mike Martz said it.
Why are you running another play?
Kick the field goal and go home.
Instead, really, this is the kind of decision
that may end up costing Dan Quinn his gig.
What were your takeaways from this?
Yeah, I'm right there with you.
I think this falls back on coaching.
And believe me, Jayden Daniels is partly to blame for that,
just not knowing and not
having the instincts to say hey I've got to make sure
that the clock stops here make sure we have
enough time but Dan Quinn we're looking
at this play unfolding there's about 55 seconds left in
the game Jaden Daniels is just kind of standing there
in the huddle waiting for the play call
and they just let it run all the way down they run
the one play there has to be a discussion at
that point of hey we don't have any timeouts guys let's just get
this spike let's do the field goal
you know you feel free to run down
the clock you can run it down to the 12 seconds and then do the
spike that also protects you from a situation where
if you have a bad snap you can throw it
away on the field goal because i don't think it
was fourth down when they would have kicked it
so they really just needed to spike
that much earlier it was just such a bad sequence it's
really i think it's a problem for Dan Quinn
his seat was already hot it's now scorching hot and
you know Jayden Daniels will be able to bounce back
from this but both guys just after the game
seemed completely like dismayed at how badly they screwed up
that situation you know as they should
as they should be Jacob also you would
also add in that you have a first year first time play caller
and David Blau in that scenario too
so as you said with coaching communication has got to be
an issue there right when you're telling
your player here's where we are here's how much time
you have left you have no timeout spike
the football the worst thing you could do is take a
sack or run the football with no time it just
to me really that came down to like you said
situational play calling on the coaching staff here speaking
of that let's go to London and what
happened with the Eagles there boy I'll tell you all you have
to do is kick the ball through the
back of the end zone you have eight seconds left you have
to know that on the other side you have
a backup snapper and on top of that you've got a kicker
who kicked a year ago a 68 yard field goal
and Cam Little how do you not defend first the kickoff
and how do you not if you're Michael Clay
the special teams coach there with Philadelphia
not tell your guys you got to cover this you
can't give them field position does this come down
to coaching too i would say so because you
have two options there you can either kick it out
of the back of the end zone which I know earlier
in the season we talked about the Cowboys Ravens game where
that wasn't the right call but the
Ravens had a timeout in that scenario
because the Jaguars didn't have a timeout their only way they
could have gotten into field goal range would have
been completing a ball near the sideline
getting out of bounds at which point you just
play sideline defense just force them to try to
throw over the middle of the field
so from that perspective they should have kicked it out of
bounds i can understand saying hey if we have
the return we can make them run out the clock okay
if you want to do that you have to make sure your defense
or your special teams unit is ready to
tackle and they just were not up to the task
and it was the second time in that game they allowed
a big return happened on the opening kickoff it
was a lot it was disallowed by penalty but Josh
Cameron ran back a touchdown on the opening kickoff
so you know if i was looking at that as
a coach I would have said I should probably just kick it out
of bounds just in case something like
that happens again but you know credit
to Nick Sirianni he took responsibility for it after the
game but that's one the Eagles are going to look
at and say wow we had that in the bag and we
completely blew it
