Leon Spilliaert (1881-1946)

Leon Spilliaert (1881-1946) was a Belgian draughtsman, illustrator, lithographer and painter. The largest Belgian symbolist artist and designer. Leon Spilliaert was the brightest representative of symbolism in the art of Belgium, while his paintings and graphic works are well known. Spilliaert's paintings are dominated by dark tones or well-defined contrasts between dark and light. A certain theme is present in all of his work: female figures, often grotesque; still-lifes, very simple in composition and designed in very strict colors; equally simple landscapes.
