Jakob Tuggener (1904–1988) was a Swiss photographer whose work developed at the intersection of documentary photography, industrial imagery, and modernist visual design. He trained as a typographer before studying photography at the Reimann School in Berlin in the late 1920s, where he was exposed to New Objectivity and avant-garde approaches to image-making. This background informed his emphasis on structure, sequencing, and the photobook as a primary form, rather than the single exhibition print.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Tuggener produced photographic work that documented both industrial production and social life in Switzerland. His images of factories, machines, and workers were characterised by sharp contrasts, dynamic framing, and an interest in rhythm and repetition. Alongside this, he photographed bourgeois social events, balls, and leisure settings, creating a visual contrast between industrial labour and elite society. These bodies of work were not conceived as conventional reportage but as visual studies structured through formal and thematic sequencing.

Tuggener is best known for his photobooks, including Fabrik (1943), Nuit de fête (1950), and Terrain vague (1953), which employ montage-like sequencing and minimal text to construct meaning through image relationships. His books foreground editing, pacing, and visual cadence as central components of photographic practice. Although his work received limited international attention during his lifetime, later scholarly and curatorial reassessment has positioned him as a significant figure in twentieth-century European photography, particularly in relation to the history of the photobook and industrial modernism.
