Hugo Sundström (1907–1973) was a Finnish press photographer whose career documented the political, social, and cultural development of Finland across more than four decades. Working principally for Hufvudstadsbladet in Helsinki, he photographed national politics, public institutions, diplomatic visits, royal engagements, military events, sport, industry, and everyday life. His work spans the period before the Second World War, the Winter War, the Continuation War, and Finland's post war reconstruction, creating a continuous visual record of the country's transition through the twentieth century. As a newspaper photographer, Sundström produced photographs intended to record events accurately and comprehensively, reflecting the central role of the press in documenting modern Finnish history.

Throughout his career, Sundström covered state occasions, parliamentary life, presidential administrations, and major public events, photographing leading political figures including Pehr Evind Svinhufvud, Kyösti Kallio, Risto Ryti, Juho Kusti Paasikivi, and Urho Kekkonen. During the Winter War and the Continuation War he documented civil defence, military personnel, bomb damage, public services, and civilian life, while his post war assignments expanded to include reconstruction, economic development, cultural activities, transport, architecture, education, and international visitors. His photographs combined clear documentary composition with the immediacy required of daily newspaper publication, resulting in an extensive archive that records both significant national events and the routines of everyday Finnish society.

Sundström's photographic legacy is represented in the book Sex årtionden i pressbilder (Six Decades in Press Photographs), published in 1971, which presents a retrospective selection from his long career in photojournalism. His photographs are also preserved in the Press Photo Archive JOKA, the Finnish Heritage Agency, and other Finnish archival collections, where they continue to provide an important visual record of twentieth century Finland. Together, his published work and surviving archive document the evolution of Finnish press photography and the role of the newspaper photographer in recording the political, social, and cultural history of the nation.
