Vladimir Putin ordered General Sergei Surovikin, known as "General Armageddon," to destroy the Dnieper River crossings. Seven Kyiv bridges were targeted, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported. Analysts believe a Russian drone brigade may be behind the intensified attacks on these facilities. The Kremlin hopes to paralyze the capital during the winter and disrupt transport links between the river's banks. Even without the complete destruction of the bridges, the damage could lead to their indefinite closure.
The publication notes that Surovikin has once again been drawn into the campaign against civilian infrastructure due to the crisis facing Russian troops on the front. According to The Telegraph , the general was previously accused of destroying the Syrian city of Aleppo, where thousands of civilians died during his command. The author compares the Kremlin's current tactics to the Syrian scenario: to intimidate the population so much that they demand the government end the war.
"As in the war in Syria, the calculation is this: kill, wound and terrorize enough civilians that they eventually demand their own government end the war," The Telegraph said.
The author immediately adds that this tactic failed in Syria and will likely suffer the same fate in Ukraine. The publication recalls that Surovikin was removed from command of the joint Russian force in Ukraine in the fall of 2023, following the mutiny of Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner Group of Companies, with whom the general maintained close ties. Following his removal, he disappeared from public view for a long time, and it was later revealed that he had been sent to Algeria by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to the publication, the seven bridges across the Dnieper River in Kyiv are critical for road and rail traffic, making them an obvious target for the Kremlin. Even without complete structural collapse, damage could lead to their indefinite closure, as authorities would not risk the collapse of overloaded supports. The capital is located on both sides of the Dnieper, and it is the bridges that provide daily connections between the predominantly residential left bank and the right bank, where government institutions and businesses are concentrated.
According to the NYT, drones have struck Dnieper River crossings several times in recent days alone, and authorities have already restricted or closed traffic on most of the capital's bridges. There is no alternative bridge closer than 90 miles south of Kyiv, so any prolonged closure of the crossing would pose serious logistical challenges not only for Kyiv residents but also for supplies throughout the country.
