Mexico is investigating and verifying the authenticity of a video that allegedly shows Mexican cartel members armed to fight in Ukraine .

According to Bloomberg , a short video has circulated on social media showing men speaking Mexican slang, with the conversation mentioning their ties to a drug cartel. One of the men in the video appears to claim that the other fighters belong to two of Mexico's largest criminal groups, including a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Speaking at a press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the authenticity of the video recording has not yet been confirmed, but did not rule out the possibility that Mexican citizens are participating in the war in Ukraine. "They could have been recruited by a private company involved in such conflicts, the army, or the government. We are investigating this case," she said.

As Bloomberg notes, the presence of foreign fighters in Russia and Ukraine has raised concerns that they could use the skills and technology they acquired at home, and that this could exacerbate long-standing conflicts in Latin American countries.

Along the US-Mexico border, drones are used primarily for aerial surveillance, facilitating drug trafficking and illegal migrant crossings. Meanwhile, in Colombia, these drones are increasingly being used to directly target military and police units.

Media previously reported that, according to Euronews, a large number of advertisements offering Belarusian citizens the opportunity to sign contracts with the Russian army have appeared on the Belarusian internet in recent months .

Russia has also established large-scale recruitment networks in Africa – in Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. The governments of these countries are attempting to cautiously curb Russian activity without severing diplomatic ties with Russia. Russia is also seeking soldiers in Yemen and Peru. "We want Kenyans to be stopped—they shouldn't be conscripted into the army at all. We're under intense pressure from some affected families who are now gathering the courage to come forward and talk about this issue," Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi told Reuters. However, Mudavadi added that he was "pragmatic and realistic" on the issue, calling Russia a superpower with which Nairobi has a long-standing relationship. "This is not a confrontation," he said. "We need a joint effort to solve this problem."

According to Ukrainian intelligence, more than 1,000 Kenyans alone were recruited into the Russian army. In February, Ghana stated that more than 50 Ghanaians had died in the war in Ukraine after being "drawn into combat." Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told Reuters that the actual figure could be higher.

He also said that Ghana has maintained and will continue to maintain diplomatic relations with Russia. "But let me be clear: where Ghanaians are harmed, deceived, or drawn into a war they don't understand, we will speak up and act," he said.

However, most African governments are likely to adopt the cautious stance of South Africa, which has seen dozens of its citizens duped into the war in Ukraine, Reuters believes.
