They’re responsible for some of the deadliest regimes in history, leaving tens of millions of people dead. Yet on today’s campuses, their faces barely register. PragerU’s Franklin Camargo heads to Cal State Northridge to show college students photos of communist leaders and find out whether they know who these men were. One is recognized thanks to a TikTok meme. Others draw total blanks. But then Franklin lays out what these leaders actually did, and asks: Do you still think communism deserves another shot? The students’ answers might surprise you.
Have you been taught anything about communism in school?
No.
Hey guys, Franklin here. Welcome to a new man on the street.
The worst mass killers in the last century were communists.
But would college students today be able to recognize them,
to know who they are and what they did?
Let's see.
Have you ever heard of communism?
Communism, socialism?
Yeah.
What do you know about it?
Damn, you want my opinion. Okay.
I would say it's like a dictatorship, maybe.
Like politics, like it's something that's said in like the news a lot.
Yeah, so communism is a political and economic ideology
where the means of production property is collectively owned.
And they want to seek a classless, moneyless, stateless society.
Tell me, you're clearly a communist.
You're wearing a t-shirt with two communist killers.
Tell me what you think communism is.
So communism essentially is worker control of the means of production.
Kind of like centralizing all of that power into like one party.
You believe in a uniparty system that has
the power to take over property, right?
The means of production.
I know I'm wearing the Lenin and Mao shirt, right?
It is not my flavor.
Your flavor, but you're okay with that.
Okay, so now I'm going to show you political figures,
communist political figures.
And you're going to tell me if you have
seen them, if you know anything about it.
Okay?
This guy.
Oh, brother, no.
Nothing?
No.
No.
No, I don't know. That is Castro. Good job.
Yeah. What do you know about him?
I just know the face and I know
the name. I don't know much about him
So he built the Cuban dictatorship just in during
the 1960s more than 10,000 people were executed
Right now more than 90% of Cubans live in poverty.
The Cuban Revolution is a net positive
So we're having this conversation right now
What do you think would happen to me if I criticize Castro
in Cuba if you criticize Castro in Cuba?
I have no idea.
No, you do know, bro.
No, I low-key don't, because I don't.
OK, let me tell you, I would be sent to prison.
I would probably be killed.
That's why Cubans for six decades have been on rafts,
trying to escape Cuba and make it to Miami.
I think you're going to know this one, probably.
No, I do not.
No?
No, I do not.
I feel like a dumb American right now.
No?
Have you ever seen someone wearing his face on a jersey?
Yeah.
Yeah, like Hispanics, something like Mexicans.
He was from Argentina, Che Guevara.
Okay, so he basically executed people who thought differently than him.
He thought gay people were inferior,
so he sent gay people to forced labor camps.
This guy.
He looks like a Lorenzo or something.
Ah, Stalin, right?
Yes, good job.
What do you know about him?
He was like a meme for a minute, like in TikTok,
so it sucks to say, but that's how I know my history.
So he was a meme on TikTok, and that's how you saw it.
Yeah, so Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1924 to 1953.
More than 20 million people died
from political violence and starvation.
Are you a fan of the Soviet Union and what it was?
I'm a fan of what they were trying to achieve.
I'm not a big Stalin fan.
Lenin, but not Stalin.
Lenin, but not Stalin.
You know who this guy is?
Not really.
I do not know.
Is that Pol Pot?
Good job.
You're the first person to know that this guy is Pol Pot.
Okay, we don't f*** with Pol Pot, please.
So more than 20% of the Cambodian population died
while he was in power.
You're wearing glasses.
You know what he did to people that wore glasses?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He was a f***ing nutjob.
Just for wearing glasses.
Just for wearing glasses
because he thought they were a symbol of the bourgeoisie.
The intellectual class, too fancy.
We need to be equal, so he killed them.
You're telling me I can't wear glasses,
bro, and you're going to kill me?
Yeah, bro, it's a last one this guy
Zhang something this is so bad. I do not know any of these people
No, so this guy is Mao Zedong.
He led communist China from 1949 to 1976
Around 50 to 70 million people died
because of his communist policies. No, that's crazy
I think Mao had good intentions,
but he he had a great couple, you know great forward
Great Leap Forward, correct
Would you wear a t-shirt with Hitler on it? I wouldn't, ever.
Absolutely not, I think...
But you would with Mao.
Yeah, so...
You know how many people died under his watch
from political violence and starvation?
Off the top of my head, no, I don't know.
50 to 70 million people.
Collectivization of the means of production.
No private property.
Political violence.
if a farmer didn't want to give up his property he would
be killed are you okay with that i want
to preface i am an anarchist right i know i'm wearing
the marxism shirt yeah so this is what
communism looks like it's really bad socialism
and communism are very popular ideas right now
among young people why do you think that is knowing
that communist leaders were so so bad
and so evil to be honest i'm not too sure this world
is just be doing a lot of stuff honestly i
I think the way it's so publicized now is due to social media,
due to the way how everybody has their own mindset.
It's like, oh, I'm going to like this guy because he looks pretty cool.
Why do you think someone would support this ideology?
Probably because they're really embodied by hate
and they hate everybody themselves.
Because when you told me about all these leaders,
it just sounds like communism just kills people.
Like you said about Cuba, like how everyone's
in poverty, no one's able to vote.
That doesn't sound really good in my eyes.
Do you think schools should do a better job teaching about this?
I think so, yeah. I mean, it's like,
it's important to know why that happened and how to avoid it.
I think, yeah, so they don't repeat it.
Yeah, it should be part of history.
Like, it's part of world history. It should be taught.
Young people really need to know what these mass killers
did before they are convinced to try communism again.
Communism is evil.
Thank you for watching this video.

So Hugo Chavez, for example,
like he allowed for the media to criticize him. He allowed for...
No, brother, no. I'm from Venezuela.
He closed private media companies. He censored.
He put people in prison, journalists in prison for criticizing him.
Yeah, so I don't have the facts.
I do.
