Video Summary
AI GeneratedPolitical journalist Tim Dunn and host Chris McCarthy analyze the political vulnerabilities of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. The discussion covers corruption allegations involving a former staffer, disputes over education funding and electric bills, and critiques of the state's immigration and public safety policies, while also reviewing various local and federal election races.
Good morning. Welcome to the third
and final hour of the program, for today anyway.
And I'm going to go to Dallas, and God willing, I'll be back tomorrow.
But for the time being, let's enjoy the company
of political journalist Tim Dunn from the Boston Herald.
Good morning, Tim. How are you?
I'm doing great, Chris. How are you?
I'm doing great. You've got your metaglasses on?
Yes, I do. I'm not recording, though. Don't worry.
He's not recording, folks, but he makes lots of videos.
Yeah, yeah, no, it's very useful for the job, for sure.
Getting on media scrums, you have two free hands now, so it's great.
Where can people see your video, your action video,
from the statehouse, various parking lots,
as elected officials run from you?
Yes, yes, and they're not running because I'm ugly, okay?
So, no, you can see it on my Twitter page at ConsiderMeDunn.
You can find him on Facebook at Timmy Dunn
and on Truth Social at Tim Dunn underscore Boston Herald
and whenever they're featured in stories at BostonHerald.com.
Tim Dunn, of course, has been covering a lot of the allegations
of corruption, legitimate people in court for corruption,
although everyone's innocent until proven guilty.
We know that.
Tim Dunn, keep us up to date here.
What is going on with the cocaine, alleged cocaine trafficker?
trafficker i was a senior staffer to the current governor
of Massachusetts Maura Healey um what's
going on with that yeah the commonwealth's favorite
cocaine trafficker yeah Lamar Cook he is uh so he
has a couple procedural hearings coming up nothing
really special yet gonna happen i was actually
just talking to my boss about this on the way here
chris actually about you know like just updates on
that and uh and it looks like i think honestly
this week might be just like a procedural kind
of schedule like you know um stuff maybe arguing about what evidence
and then um they have one more
november and i think they're gonna they're gonna
schedule it obviously for after the election
and um and that's really where we're gonna get
into a lot of the good stuff but what he was doing
where it was found you know all
this different what he exactly was doing with this cocaine
allegedly and um and uh he really has had quite
a ride i call him the luckiest uh you know uh
disgraced former state worker ever you know he went
from being arrested in october last year
got released by a healy um appointed judge
for like like 75,000 reduced bail no no bail
restrictions a week after getting reduced getting released
from bail his mother wins a million
dollar lottery ticket uh he got 31,000 buyout
from the governor the governor didn't check that
he had a 2001 um or didn't care he had 2001 gun arrest
for shooting at people on a porch
all you know this goes on at snap funded disney world vacations
this guy is like the journalist
gift that keeps on giving it's a lot
of um similarities to the Whitey Bulger stories right
connected to the government involved in crime hitting
the lottery you know you know family
member hitting the lottery there's a lot
of comparisons to uh Whitey Bulger or any or any
mafia too i mean i think of like John Gotti
when he was asked by uh the FBI what he does for work
and you know and he's driving a brand new Mercedes
in 1980 he says oh i'm a plumber yeah it's like
okay you know i guess he is he was yeah
um now he's passed on um and Lamar Cook is very much
with us and currently out on bail he's currently out
on bail 25,000 it was the prosecutors wanted
100,000 pretty serious charges
and he has no restrictions the only restriction he had was
turning in his passport so he can't travel
internationally but certainly taking a lot
of domestic trips that's for sure chris one
of the stories that Tim Dunn wrote very early in
on in this i mean you've done you
and your team over there and your editors at Boston
has done incredible work on this story
um the state police did a background check on him and
gave the governor's office the details of the fact
that he'd been arrested for being involved
in a shooting in Springfield um what
were the circumstances of that shooting yeah well chris
first of all you can't let a drive-by shooting get
in the way of a DEI hire you know that's
something silly but anyways in 2001 uh it was he ended up being uh
so we don't know what happened
with him you know conviction wise
because the case ended up being sealed as reported by the
Boston Globe at that time uh
but in 2001 Cook allegedly was driving the car in a car with
another uh gentleman and they um they stopped
at a house in Springfield you know you can probably
imagine for what reasons they stopped
and they got out of a car and started firing a gun at people
on a porch and this was all included
in a state police background check among other things with
with Cook that was given to Healy's office
and you know presumably Governor Healy and they either
did not look close enough
or they did not care i'd probably presume the latter was probably
more likely they wanted him in the position too good to check out
and when they got the details
they just ignored them yeah i mean it's one
of the classic cases if it's too good to be true
right you know and it's like you know it's i
think you're totally right in terms of i don't
want to i don't want to look i don't want
to know just get this DEI hire in there my understanding
is he was sponsored by a very powerful Springfield state representative
that's the rumor mill that
you hear from democrats up on Beacon Hill
um and so there he is and today i mean it's got to be
the worst case of blatant corruption um in the history
of the united states have a senior staffer
importing pounds and pounds of cocaine right you know it's crazy
because i feel like for some reason
and it shouldn't be this way that like cook
is Lamar Cook is stuck in an echo chamber in
massachusetts i don't know why it hasn't
been picked up more nationally i mean this guy as
you've pointed out point
at countless times he tore it around Kamala Harris you know like the
sitting vice president could have been the president
and he tore her around while he was
probably doing like slinging cocaine deals
afterwards it's it's bananas and it's totally
but the governor allowed it and he was like what the third
or fourth most powerful under her office
it's just unbelievable i i'm so shocked
and you know Manoog's credit Mike Manoog brought it up
in the last debate and it didn't catch
on either there right it's everybody's giving it as Howard
car says a good leaving alone yeah for some reason
a good leaving alone i'm surprised in
the you know this is something that i would have
been like pushing non-stop when i was at Fox News
so i'll be saying well you know what
this guy just happened now his mom won the lottery right
you know it's a great story yeah it's sad
that it's going on here it's it's very Rhode Island
like but it's it's here it's here in Massachusetts Tim Dunn
is my guest he'll be here for the hour
tim will take some phone calls sure good morning thanks
for holding good morning guys how are you
today good how doing good good good tim dunn i love it
when you come on you do a great job you're
like an old school reporter like uh i don't know like
a tim white investigates type thing i love
it sort on that realm and and the question i have
is uh Brian Shirley when he was running said
day one when i go in there all those charges
are going to be taken off the electric bill i want to
see somebody ask her point blank put her on the spot
if you're going to provide real relief to
people why haven't you eliminated the charges off the bill
and whatever she says are you going to do
tomorrow morning when you go in and get the residents real relief
or is this just baloney
I want to hear somebody put her on the spot
and get a get an answer why are you not going to go
in tomorrow morning and eliminate that off our bill
that is the biggest relief we need as residents
it's the biggest thing talked about it's all i know all
my friends that's all we talk about is
the charges on the bill we don't care about
the education budget none of that other baloney this
is killing people these hundreds of dollars
of charges um i want to see her put on the spot and
have an answer and want to know why she hasn't taken
that off the bill yet oh good point caller
it really is a good point you know first of all thanks
for the compliment to be even mentioned in
the same conversation as a Tim White
is an honor you know i think i have a long way to go to reach
his his peak but uh but in terms of what you
were saying that's a good question i actually did ask
lieutenant governor last week i wasn't able to get healy
but uh she i asked her i said you know
is this uh you know they took off that one smart charge
from the electric bill and and that's
fiscal i kind of stole this this angle from them
but you know they they poised it really well
Now, I asked Lieutenant Governor Driscoll,
is this kind of an admission of like, hey, you know, these are kind
of what's behind all the high prices here, these extra charges.
And you're able to, you know, to kind of just wish them away.
Right.
You know, and Governor Driscoll said, well,
we have the resources to pay for that.
And that was really her explanation.
I don't understand what that means.
You know, she's telling me that they can cover it through
executive costs when they're not collecting on that.
Great.
That's not what I was asking you.
You know, is this an admission that these are behind?
And I think we all know it is.
Totally an admission.
They're literally saying, we're getting rid of this so we can save
you money from these unnecessary charges that we feel are necessary.
This is what you're dealing with here.
And she was running away from you.
Yeah, she was walking away.
I will say she did.
She may have been winded.
It was a short walk, but she did stick in there.
She hung in there with you.
She hung in there, and then she got a towel.
Got into the SUV.
She got dabbed off by a towel in the car from all the sweat.
508-996-04...
Tim Dunn from the Boston Herald is my guest.
Tim, I've been talking about your story all morning.
So your story is on the $1.7 billion education scholarship fight
that pits Healy against Minogue.
And you have some stuff on the New York governor,
Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul, just declared,
I'm not going to leave money on the table
and will join the Trump-backed education scholarship program.
um your your article goes on the point
that same 1.7 billion dollar pool of cash that could come
to Massachusetts if Governor Healy followed
the New York example uh a fellow Democrat governor
uh from New York who opted in not to leave money
on the table uh talk about this story yeah so if
you guys remember anyone who watched the debate
on Thursday for a good portion of it they
really went back and forth Menogue
and Healy on this the scholarship thing and you know
Menogue was putting out that number 1.7 billion dollars
a state will get and and and Healy was
really kind of discrediting it
and she was what i found it doesn't seem like she knew much about it
right because i had asked her this a month ago i said
are you going to enroll in it well i'm
looking into it we're reviewing it she said
the same thing on Thursday we're reviewing it you
know so it's been months and months of reviewing
this thing didn't seem to stop Governor Hochul and
you know i think a lot of people might have
been confused about it because i you know to be honest
a lot of reporters are confused i think it's
a natural turnoff for anybody when you hear you
know scholarship tax credit it seems it's like i don't want
to get technical i want to talk about
ICE and i want to talk about protests right
but like so i decided to dive into it just kind of
get a feel for it and it's really
a simple thing it's a simple concept it's a there's a
1700 tax break for single filers
or if you're married filing jointly that's 3400 you can get
for a donation of the same amount to a uh
a um an educational place you know school a private
school daycare whatever anything that's providing education
and will presumably provide scholarship
So maybe not a daycare, but schools.
And and you're giving them that donation,
which these schools have to use for a scholarship.
OK. And under Minogue's plan,
this is where the 17 the one point seven billion dollars comes
from is under his plan to get five hundred thousand of both
the married married filing jointly and single filers.
Whatever combination of those makes five hundred thousand
that would equate to roughly one point seven billion dollars
being injected into scholarship opportunities in Massachusetts.
it's a pretty you know and then again in turn
these people get tax breaks and i think you have
you know the the limit is you can't make more than 300
of the area median income so you know
pretty standard stuff and it's part
of the big beautiful bill it's part of the big beautiful
bill that's the key that's the key thing if this was a trump
and republican backed initiative and
it being passed so it's a solid campaign strategy
on minogue's part first of all not only is it is
a good pitch for voters and a good thing you know
a good platform but it's also a really good
strategy to pit against Healy
because she's stuck between a rock and a hard place, either she has to
endorse a Republican and a Trump-backed initiative here
or she has to adequately explain why it's
not good and she didn't do that in the debate
because she clearly doesn't know about it right
so it's um it's she still is reviewing it
but Governor Hochul as you just said she had a press
release on Friday saying she's not going to leave
this money on the table she carefully reviewed it
she said before how she's not going
to do it unless it proves to be beneficial for children
in the state and families so it seems
to be a beneficial thing five other Democrat-run states
with Democrat governors um signed on to it
the only one left is a Pennsylvania governor Josh
Shapiro he's considering it still
so with Healy you know it she really didn't have a good excuse
she reverted to Trump you know she said
that this 1.7 billion dollar figure is out of thin air which
is not out of thin air it's not guaranteed it could
be less that you know it all depends on who wants
to donate to this right it all depends on how many
of the people how many people in Massachusetts
participate right exactly and we're a very generous state
as individuals we really are right and also
you know what who wouldn't want the tax break if
you can get that you're going to get that off your
taxes so it's beneficial
on both sides it generates money it's it's a it's a it's really
not a partisan issue i don't think no when you see
the governor of new york it couldn't be more
liberal partisan until you look at massachusetts partisan than Hochul
but here she is denying
children serious educational dollars from the private sector simply
because she doesn't like
donald trump it's really outrageous
and all she does is she says well a free community college
She's like, OK, well, you can also get the traditional,
you know, funded college for other kids, too.
Yes. Doesn't have to just be everything.
And again, it's it's she's really stuck in this.
It's a Trump thing. She doesn't want to get
the scrutiny from the left if she does endorse it.
It's sad how paralyzed she is, really, quite frankly.
508-996-05. Tim Dunn from the Boston Herald is my guest.
Good morning. Thanks for holding.
Yeah, good morning. Am I clear again here?
You're on, yes.
Okay.
You know, the Democrats, to me, are two of their policies.
One is the open border, and one is this policy
of not locking up violent criminals.
Now, if you remember this one Democrat that was deported
to the Democratic Republic a while ago
when he only had the gang affiliation,
he can't go back to his life in danger.
But then they put these people right back out in the streets.
They came here to get away from these people, supposedly.
And yet they put these people back on.
They absolutely lose me on open borders and their policy on crime.
It baffles me, especially violent crime.
I'd like to hear Tim's thoughts on that. Thank you.
Thanks for the call. Open border
and allowing criminal legal aliens to get back on the street.
Yeah. So, you know, it's a it's definitely a back
and forth issue with that.
You see kind of the same thing playing out across blue states.
You see in Massachusetts where you got ICE working their tail off.
You saw an operation down here a couple of weeks ago.
They're trying to get dangerous criminals off the street.
You know, I would say, you know, maybe there is some it's
not an argument that I think many people believe in.
I don't think the majority of the country buys it.
But there's certainly an argument you could
have about, you know, is it going too far?
Are we getting too many people who aren't dangerous criminals?
Sure, that can be a discussion, but I think the main point of what
the Trump administration has been doing has been the right move.
The trouble that you run into now is you have these different –
in Massachusetts, for example, the PROTECT Act doesn't
allow any cooperation whatsoever with ICE at all.
We're not even – now, I think not even –
you can't even anymore call them and let them know.
I think – no, you can't.
You can call on your own and say, hey,
this guy is getting released sometime,
but you can't hold a guy for ICE if you're a sheriff.
You can't cooperate with your police department.
and what we see anyway is these courts letting
these guys out the back door and it just is a
recycled arrest kind of thing if they don't move
on you even just saw these two guys and the uh
the guys who stabbed the NYPD officers they
were arrested in Lynn yes where did they come from
arrested and for refuge Massachusetts right
so it's uh it's it's it's it's honestly sad it's
terrifying cycle that's been happening you know i
i think everybody has in mind you know you worry
about for me i worry about the woman in my life
and you know if they're out alone in a big city
somewhere or something and this adds
on to that fear you know is someone who otherwise wouldn't
have been here who's nuts is gonna they're gonna hurt them look
when you when you're growing up
i grew up watching cowboy movies right cowboy
television shows they will always do something
wrong and run for the border
of mexico right they're out there in there and they go we're
gonna go to mexico we're gonna get out we're gonna go
to mexico now they come to massachusetts
right because they're gonna be hidden exactly yeah
the old mexico from the cowboy movies is
now massachusetts commit a crime somewhere else is an illegal alien
and run to massachusetts
because you can literally hide out
in custody yeah they'll protect you i may have stolen this
from you chris sandals massachusetts not only come here
and hide but we'll get you put up in a nice
luxury hotel we'll get you food debit cards
transportation whatever you want a cell phone
come on by sandals massachusetts
for a legal alien yes they should really have the commercials i
really we need those we need those commercials
Mano should pick that up oh that would be
That'd be hilarious.

Welcome back to the program.
I'm Chris McCarthy.
My guest is a political reporter for the Boston Herald, Tim Dunn.
Tim was at the debate.
Tim and I were just talking off the air.
You're around Governor Healey quite a bit.
um i have a lot of friends of mine
who have to work with her and know her socially
and they all give her high grades
on her personality that when it does you know they
don't agree with her on all her policies all that stuff
but they personally they all like
Governor Healey yeah it's interesting
to see too Chris you know i've had that gift that a lot of
you know i think it's rare to see what
a an executive office kind of holder is like yeah
you know and you hear this stuff a lot a lot
of the time you hear a lot of people um i i have
some friends who had their dads worked
in secret service they say Bill Clinton was a was a pleasure
to be around Hillary Clinton not so much right
um and then they say things about George Bush like he
had nicknames for everybody trump
is actually apparently really funny yeah so uh you know with
Governor Healey you know um i think people
are usually surprised and i tell them that she's
pretty affable yeah you know she um i think you know
when we're when we're getting after it and
we're in the media scrum not so much she's you know she's
in this to win this she's competitive
yeah but you know she she uh for example she stopped
by the State House uh christmas party
right and that was more of a political appearance
but she stopped by and actually had a couple beers
with people and talked and joked around
and um you know i i always say that if she if politics
wasn't in the way because i think she just has
an innate obsessive drive to advance her political
career yes so if that if she was a librarian if she
was a gym teacher she would be a really cool
aunt type like she's affable in that way but again we're
also in election season i've known her since
really pretty much election season started
and um and she's competitive and she'll go after you
she'll battle you she'll discredit you yeah
so um but it's it's fun it makes it competitive in
a back and forth yeah um she uh look like
a like i always tell people it's almost like confession
i voted for her there were a lot of reasons i did
that and i'm not going to do that again
um i've been very disappointed with her policies
but from you know what you say and what other
people whose opinions i trust they find her to be good company
when she's around yeah yeah i mean
you know i haven't experienced her in a hangout setting
but you know it's at least at least not
at that besides from that state house thing
but you know i can certainly see it i can certainly
see her being you know a pleasure to be around
at a cookout if we're not talking politics stuff
like that but you know it's nice to have that perspective
but it's also nice to have to see the
you know the politician more healy she's kind
of more cutthroat she's more go after it i'm going
to win this she there's one thing you can say about
her she's out there she wants to win she
is a she's a competitor yes um and i think what people saw
and i pointed this out on a couple
other uh uh shows i called into after the after
the debate chris was people i think got a glimpse
to what Haley's personality like is like
and what her um what her uh emotional reactions can be like
there's a few times in the debate that Minogue really got
her and you saw that response that's
what i try to go for most of the time if i ask
her a tough question yeah there's sometimes where
she's ready for it and you can tell that she's ready for it
and she has like a good response
she's good at that when she really knows
but if she if she's caught off guard doesn't really know
what she's talking about or especially in a debate setting
which we saw and doesn't feel like her
trump strategy is working you can see the emotional reaction to things
so example of this was uh okay
when they were talking about
the federal tax scholarship thing right he she got a kind of
annoyed and so she started doing
the whole like you know well you know 1.7 billion dollars in
tax credit isn't it isn't education plan mike you know
that kind of stuff like snarky responses
she got really upset with the integrity thing
when mike mentioned uh it's about integrity
and mentioned Lamar Cook and the two billion
dollar Springfield courthouse deal she really
took offense to that oh yeah
and you can see the visible reaction there so i think what that's in
this upcoming debate that's what mike really should try
to go after still is one being more
of the you know restrained not taking the bait
on the Trump stuff like he did the first time but
also really poking the bear in these things
and mention it professionally and let her react
unprofessionally Tim, you were there at the debate uh out
in the lobby you saw them all come through
describe the atmosphere yeah it
was busy you know you got every station there every outlet you know
all the reporters i'm typically in pools
with from the Globe, WBUR, all the TV stations and uh you know
We were all waiting for him to come out.
Governor Healy came first.
And I will say to her credit, you can
say what you want about Governor Healy.
There's certainly a lot to say about her.
She does take questions most of the time.
Sometimes she runs away when she doesn't want to.
And you can definitely criticize her for that, as I have.
And you can see the videos of her running
from Tim Dunn on his Twitter account.
Yes, you can.
You can go to X @considermedunn
But I would say most of the time she's not running away.
But sometimes she does.
But she didn't run away this time.
She really had no choice.
She was walking into a door full of the media.
and uh and she did take questions i asked
her um you know first outright you know i said governor
you mentioned uh trump over 32 times in this debate
is this getting a little old now you know
and she didn't really answer that question
and just went on you know to say how trump really is
on the ballot MAGA Mike and i
also got to ask her um this is actually important during the i think
John Keller did a good job moderating i think he
was pretty fair and he asked them both can you
mention a blunder that you had in your your past
and to Tim's credit he said you know as a
parent I've had blunders uh as a CEO I've had blunders
of course we're all human you know and
governor Healy I you know Chris I think we
were both in the wrong business she has not had a
blunder wouldn't you know not one after all
these things we just mentioned from energy costs to
Lamar Cook to Springfield not one thing has gone wrong in her office
and she doubled down on that
when I asked her she essentially did you know she she
in the debate she did the answer about like
how her mom inspired her and kind of dodged it
and then she went on to just mention why it's so
important to run against Trump when I asked
her about the blunder stuff so we'll try to get her
on that again hopefully maybe WCDB has the cojones
to ask her about it too but it's kind of like
don't you know when you're going into it this is a job interview
when you're going into a job
interview don't you anticipate some form of that question
is going to be asked yeah you're honestly
doing yourself a disservice if you don't practice
that at least in the car ride over okay what have
I done wrong we all have to have the stock you know it can
be cliche just have something right
you know we're all human no essentially I should have opened
that folder that the state police
handed me before we hired Lamar Cook right I should have
not approved the 31,000 buyout he got
yeah you know that kind of stuff you know instead
of just saying no I'm perfect that doesn't make
anybody sound good right at all that's just basic manners
in American culture right so you know that
was really I think a mistake on her part
and maybe it showed a little bit of her ego, well I think she
I, I you know, as affable as I say she is, she
also I, I see as somebody you can still enjoy someone's
company but also they can be someone
who doesn't think they're wrong at all, right? You know, and
she's certainly I think one of those people, I think
that's a sickness of politicians too, they
they're trained now at this point to not ever admit you're wrong
because that you know they're
afraid of the whole, you know, I could get unelected now
because of this, you know, or someone could take
it and in a sound clip and you know cut it up
and make it look whatever, right? Make it look like you
know in other words when you explain it fully
they could just put take the mistake part take
your explanation out, but again at the end
of the day you gotta, she's got a serious comms team
around her, they can, they can handle a lot
of that, but that was a, that was a, that's interesting
insight from Tim Dunn, from the Boston Herald, Tim
um, with the courthouse deal that really got
her upset, yet she's doubling down saying she's saving
the taxpayer money, but every, anybody on
the surface can tell it's just a bad deal, it is a bad deal
and Chris, what really surprised me, I
actually reacted being like, oh well she said
this, she really slammed the losing bidders, I mean that's
just not something that seems, that's kosher really
to do as a governor especially for supporting this
deal, she, I think she said, if you want to be like, I'm gonna paraphrase
and it was along the lines
of like these cry baby sore loser bidders
or something it was real go back and i didn't include
the quotes in the end of my piece on the debate i didn't have the room
but i really i was like wow
that's that's going out after that i mean good luck
with springfield now right you know i mean
i guess you're just throwing springfield at the window
because not even the mayor doesn't support
it really virtually nobody out there does
and was again these boston-based bigwigs are going to get
this deal now in their town where they don't want it right
for the price they don't want or nobody
wants you know and it was smarter governor
of a governor of hopefully governor minogue maybe
someday um of mike minogue to point that out during
the debate you know um saying you know
this whole deal is just ridiculous how does this spell integrity
and she you know i just think that
that was another emotional reaction of her she got mad
at that and she really lashed out at these
losing bidders i thought that was notable
um tim dunn is my guest tim um the john deaton um
markey vote for the u.s senate where's
that campaign at so it's kind of like a i don't
want to say deadlock but you're kind of seeing over
and over the same stuff and again i say this
with all due respect to john deaton he's a great candidate
but it really was an uphill battle just
as it was probably against going against elizabeth
warren you know it's just a hard thing to get out
an entrenched 50-year incumbent from whether you know
from just congress in general and Ned Markey
and a couple terms of senator same thing
with Warren you know they're entrenched they're very
popular they're part of the you know they're one
of the progressive figureheads yeah you know and
to unseat that in Massachusetts it's a really hard thing
and he's gone after it every way i think he
did try to mix it up a little bit he went down
to um to DC a couple weeks ago and uh into Maryland
and they parked a billboard truck outside Markey's
home pointing out how he's never here but you know
i think you know we've seen Joe Kennedy the third did
the same stuff the people who are supporting
him there's clearly enough right they just don't care they want
to hear they know they want to see
him bring Bernie Sanders here and AOC here
and in a primary they want to have a whole powwow about
all these things you know
and they they just want to hear green new deal progressive ideology so
unless something magical happens unless there's
a big October surprise you know I I unfortunately
I I don't I see I probably would predict
a Markey re-election at this point yeah I I'm with you on
that I feel bad saying it um and there's there's time left you hope
for John Deaton I think he's
The great guy who's really experienced, a lawyer,
former Marine Corps officer, drives a Tesla, self-driving Tesla.
He drove me to my dialysis treatment one day.
I like John Deaton, but I wonder if by not having a primary,
it made it easier for him to get the nomination.
But in the end, what's the nomination worth
if you don't have enough name ID to overcome the incumbent?
That's what I think. If he entered and had a primary opponent,
it could have got him, you know, he would have won a debate.
He would have won the primary. He would have had
those commercials already out there instead of sitting and waiting.
And instead, it kind of just gets old.
Anyway, again, he had good ideas.
He had the first inter-party primary debate
with Seth Moulton. That was smart.
You know, but he also had two kind of apples to go out,
you know, after there at that point.
Now it's just Markey. He crewed. I mean, again,
I always point out this thing, too, that Chester Tan pointed out.
I always steal the fact from him and his Twitter page.
More Democrats voted for Seth Moulton to lose than Republicans voted
in total in the Republican governor's race in the primary.
And then it was like 250,000 voted for governor on the Republican side.
And then it was 348,000 Democrats voted for Seth Moulton to lose.
So you see the numbers that are really stacked against you here.
You look at, I know there's a strategy a lot of people say,
and they do it in the Democrat as well as the Republicans.
But we're talking about the Republicans right now.
uh they say well we don't want to have
a primary i'm totally against that theory because yeah you
don't spend money in the primary so you have it all in november
but the reality of it is all the
people who vote in the primary vote
in november right you don't you don't vote in the primary
to skip november so money invested in the primary victory
is money invested earlier for the november
victory right and again if you're if you're getting
those people in the primary hooked on
then they tell their friends at dinner time
and their discussion the election coming up in three
weeks from now right that it all helps you it's
a it's a big wave that has to keep on building
and you know that's what it is you can see
in the ninth congressional district you had a primary
between uh mr swallow from new bedford and bill keating
and um bill keating really dominated that
primary as you would have expected against the progressive
and uh however tyler mcallister and
nurse dan they decided not to have a primary nurse dan dropped out
who came really close
to knocking out keating relatively um and uh
but he dropped out and decided to back tyler mcallister
who in the end has raised 175 000
and is having a really hard time getting any traction right
because keating's entrenched he doesn't have
to answer you he doesn't do anything right and i
think what the mistake is right the mistake almost
is it's like you almost want if you're the if
you're the lower party if you're the struggling party
which the republicans are in this state
yes you almost want a primary opponent
so you can get your again your name propped up right it's the
opposite if you're a democrat and you're in the majority party
and you're settled and you're an
incumbent you don't want a primary opponent you wanted
to smooth sail on to the general yes so
it's really the opposite if tyler mccallister
was a democrat if he was keating then then yes
then it'd be you know start celebrating
when your primary opponent drops out opposite opposite thing
nowadays with the primary i was talking to a democrat
who's in a competitive election
and um we were talking about it
and his republican opponent had started out gangbusters
knocking on doors but this guy's not knocking on doors
and um he's got another type of campaign
and my opinion is the republican noticed
that his democrat opponent uh who's in the front
wasn't knocking on doors and so i think he gave up doing it
because maybe it's not something you
have to do when the reality of it is republicans
in massachusetts have to work twice three times
as hard as the incumbent democrats yeah well not only
because it's an incumbent they already have
their regular duties they can get out press anyways
but on top of that they're already the
cream of the crop they're the biggest stars right you have
to outshine them tremendously and it's
non-stop so you know someone
who's been doing a good job i think at that i and you know again
she's got an uphill battle too
is elizabeth dion she's really hammered away at a lot of stuff has
given the press a lot of tips including me
on big important stories about the treasurer and
and actually what you see now
is you seeing uh deb goldberg finally start reacting she actually
put out a i think an ad or or said something
or a statement saying that uh dion is like crazy and
tied to a billionaire or something so she's reacting
though but before that when dion wasn't
as much of a threat yet was still building up
these these um these different uh attacks against
goldberg didn't react she did the typical incumbent playbook
but she's really getting under her now
which is a positive sign for him.
We'll talk more about the Treasurer's List when we come back.

at carter's gift cards are great at carter's
i absolutely love the store love carter's carter's is the best
and you know you can get in and get
out that's what i love so tim talking about
the treasurer's race um i've had a lot of interactions
went to lunch with um the republican candidate she's doing
a great job she's out there and she's
banging away at goldberg she is she really has
been hammering away a lot more than other uh
statewide candidates have in their own
their own respective races and it's a good sign you know it
shows that she's willing to fight willing to get
these things out there and she's actually getting
a reaction from deb goldberg now as i just said before
the last break you know goldberg is reacting
she's she's throwing out these messages saying
that you know deon's crazy and is a you know
tie to a billionaire. I didn't really get the whole gist of that, but-
So I had Elizabeth Dion yesterday,
and we talked about this billionaire thing. And she
pointed out that her parents, she didn't inherit wealth.
Her parents actually got a house foreclosed
on when she was growing up.
And so, and the fact is, and there's nothing wrong with this,
but Deb Goldberg inherited hundreds of millions
of dollars from the Stop & Shop for-
I was going to say, it's an interesting thing to try to call out
somebody for when you're literally the heiress to a fortune.
Right.
You know, and again, even if Liz Dion did inherit money,
you know, she said she didn't, but even if she did, who cares?
Right.
When my parents die one day, I'm going to inherit their house.
Right.
You know, I mean, whoop-dee-doo.
I inherited property.
It's a great way to get ahead in life, to inherit property.
Right?
It is.
I mean, it's a great plan.
hopefully you know your plan your plans include inheriting
a bunch of money but probably they
don't i don't know but i i guess nowadays it means you can't run
for office now i guess i i i'm too
spoiled i guess you know i don't get that i mean again
but you know when you have nothing to really
throw back at somebody you start going for the mud
that's why they call it mudslinging that's
that's what she's doing it is um really interesting
do we think that the republicans
tim are going to pick up any seats here
in the federal legislature in massachusetts i wouldn't
bet on it right i mean again like you can you can hope
for stuff i mean but you know we just
mentioned how Tyler McAllister's having a a tough time
and he's a great candidate you know yes he is
and you know and again you never know i wouldn't say he's
a total loss either you know but i i
think it's really hard to to get somebody out like
a Bill Keating who's been in office there
since what 2012 and he's had public office way before
that as well you know so it's really hard
it's just a really hard thing um i think
if if if Tyler has made any mistakes it is being too
focused on what he knows best the fishing industry
as opposed to all the other issues that most
people care about i think most people do recognize
the importance of the fishing industry but most
people aren't employed in the fishing industry right
and so opportunities for instance if you elect a
Republican they get to work with Donald Trump
which who makes all the federal budget executive
decisions so if you vote for a Democrat like Bill Keating he's going
to have to sign on to impeach
Donald Trump exactly that's for an entire term
that's right for the end of Trump's term is their
entire term till they're re-elected again it's
not like it's a Democrat senator candidate saying i
you know for two of the six years of an office i'm going
to battle Trump it's different right
and so what you're saying is i'm going to vote for a Democrat
who's going to impeach the president
not that he maybe even wants to but he's going
to be forced to go along with a gang
and that's going to preclude them from getting any
of the federal tax dollars back in the form
of infrastructure like a new sewage treatment plant
for one of the many communities emptying
into Buzzards Bay you perfectly said perfectly summarized yeah
um this hour is brought to you
by the cold beer and the world's best chicken wings
at Rose Alley Alehouse upstairs downstairs
inside outside full menu all kinds
of great stuff great beers great other drinks at Rose Alley Alehouse
go have a couple of drinks kick the weekend off early
or extend the weekend have a couple drinks
make some mistakes at Rose Alley Alehouse we'll
be right back welcome back to the program my guest
for a few more minutes is Tim Dunn
from the Boston Herald Tim Dunn if people want to follow you on
social media how do they do it certainly it's
on X it's at consider me done facebook Timmy Dunn
and Truth Social uh at tim dunn underscore boss
Herald uh we've got got a number of ballot
questions question one is a Diana Desaglio question what
do you think they'll pass i think
so i think you saw 72 last time i think people
are going to want the you know they're going to
want an audit again they're going to want to have
these things done right and make the governor
subject to it and everybody else subjected
to it what about question nine put on by the gun
the civil rights community uh that needs
a uh we want to vote no on question nine if you
support civil rights what do you think is going
to happen if i'm going by the lawn sign test it
seems pretty even you know i mean obviously
depending where you go down here i see no more
no on nine signs in the Cape More no on nine signs
but the closer i get my commute to Boston
i see a lot more yes on nines and i'm getting equal emails too
so that seems down the middle to
me um the um the question on the tax question five
which is about limiting the amount of revenue
the state of Massachusetts could take
from the taxpayers before they have to give a rebate um
that's back and forth i think it's back and forth
but i think you see that in messaging i think that
the state you know people who are probably you know
for keeping that away they're probably paying
some different groups to really pump that message
of vote against it but i think if you're going to
you know i think what the voters really want
is to have a bit more ease in their pocketbook so i
think you're going to see that but again
as we learned in Mass they can vote it for 100 and
they they say go screw we're not going to do it tim thanks
so much for coming in thanks chris all
