Good afternoon everyone and welcome to 22 News at 4. I'm Claire Overton
and we'll get to your top four at four in just a moment,
but first we always have a look at commuter traffic and weather.
Let's bring in 22 News Storm Team Meteorologist Adam Strzucka.
Adam, there's been a lot of wet weather today.
Yeah, we had the rain this morning.
We're getting a little bit of a flow right now, but we're going
to be tracking some showers and thunderstorms that will be working
through a little bit later on this afternoon into this evening.
As far as traffic goes, not too many issues out there.
Typical slowdowns you would expect
on a Friday afternoon, especially on 91
One in Springfield, Forest Park area, the Longmeadow Curve.
Seeing some slowdowns there.
Route 20, a few slowdowns out towards Ludlow and Wilbraham.
Moving up to the north,
91 pretty much moving pretty smoothly up in the northern areas.
No real delays on the pike either.
Got some slowdowns in Northampton.
Looks like Route 5 area you may encounter some slowdowns.
Let's take a look right now at the clouds and radar.
And you can see what we're tracking.
Not much going on over us right now.
But you look to the west, this line of showers and thunderstorms.
This is a strong cold front that we'll
be working through a little bit later on tonight.
But ahead of it, we're going to be tracking these showers
and possibly some thunderstorms.
Hopefully a lot of the severe weather stays to our south.
But we have issued a weather alert
because some of these storms could be on the strong to severe side.
We'll track those for you in just a few minutes
with the 22 News Storm Team Skycast, Claire.
Thanks, Adam.
Springfield Police are investigating after
a man was shot on McKnight Street last night.
Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh saying officers
were called to the 100 block of McKnight Street
around 9 in the evening for a shot spotter activation.
They found evidence of a shooting and stopped a car
for speeding on St. James Avenue near the rotary shortly after.
The driver told officers that a gunshot victim was inside his car.
The adult male victim was brought to Bay State Medical Center
to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Earlier this morning, a portion of the Mass Pike
was closed in Russell due to a rollover crash.
State police told 22 News officers responded
to a report of a crash around 8 in the morning.
Police say the driver was already out of the vehicle
and was evaluated by EMS for potential injuries.
All lanes were temporarily closed to clear up the accident
and tow the vehicle, but they all reopened around 8.40 this morning.
Local leaders and shooting survivors
from schools are speaking out after four people
were killed yesterday at an elementary school in Oregon.
In an interview with News Nation, Sandy Hook shooting survivor,
second grade teacher Abby Clements said the road
to recovery for the community will be long.

22 News is your local election headquarters and early
in-person voting begins tomorrow for the November 3rd general election.
Registered Massachusetts voters can cast a ballot at designated
early voting locations in their city or town through October 30th.
Election officials recommend checking local schedules ahead
of time since hours and locations can vary by community.
For those voting by mail,
you must request a mail-in ballot by October 27th.
And they must be postmarked by November 3rd
and received by officials by November 6th.
And now let's get another check at today's weather.
Adam, you said we have a storm rolling in.
When can people expect to see that weather?
Yeah, it's going to be over the next few hours,
between about now and about 8 o'clock this evening.
In fact, let's take a look at the sky cast.
This is 7 o'clock this evening.
That's when we do expect some of these showers
and some strong to potentially severe thunderstorms.
That's why we have issued that weather alert.
And our main concern will be for some strong
damaging winds, some heavy rain as well.
But you can see it does move out of the area fairly quickly.
So by midnight, we're just dealing with mostly cloudy skies overnight.
Some clouds around tomorrow morning.
There we are at 7 a.m.
Then we'll start to see more in the way of sunshine.
But those showers and storms are going to bring the cold air in.
So you're going to feel that tomorrow.
High temperatures tomorrow only in the 40s and 50s.
And it's going to be windy.
So the wind chill will make it feel like it's
in the 30s and 40s most of the day.
Then tomorrow night, clear skies.
And that's really going to allow temperatures to drop off.
By Sunday morning,
we could see low temperatures getting down into the 20s and 30s.
We'll have plenty of sunshine Sunday.
The winds will be lighter and temperatures a little bit warmer,
but still below average with highs getting up into the 50s.
We'll show you the showers and storms and the cold air that's
on the way for the weekend on 22 News tonight at 5, Claire.

It's still unknown what was behind the incident.

the company's second-generation Roadster at an event in Texas.
The car drove up an inverted ramp,
spun around and landed itself on the ground.
It also used thrusters to lift itself over
a fleet of other Tesla vehicles.
Musk said the Tesla will build the vehicle in 2028,
but did not name a price.

And federal, state, and local officials today gave
an update on the West East Rail.
We'll tell you where developments on this project currently stand.
Now, last look at traffic.
And not too many issues out there so far.
Interstate 91 getting some slowdowns,
especially in Forest Park, Longmeadow Curve area,
as you're heading up into West Springfield, some delays there.
I-91, not too many issues.
Route 20, you've got some slowdowns there
as you head towards Wilbraham and Ludlow.
Mass Pike, traffic moving pretty smoothly.
You've got some slowdowns downtown Westfield
and as you head up into Northampton.
But overall, so far, not too many issues, Claire.
