Store owner runs down teen after alleged burglary, police say

Breaking news. This man is accused of running down a teenager on an e-bike and leaving him for dead. Good afternoon. I'm Jack Royer. Thanks for joining us. I'm Luanne Sorrell. Police say that teenage boy is accused of stealing from this man's store, so he chased after him in his car, running him over. It all began at a corner store on South Wickham Road in West Melbourne. Bailey Bockover is live there this afternoon. So, Bailey, that teenager is now in critical condition. Luann, in critical condition, still in Holmes Regional Hospital as of this evening. Police say it started early this morning when the store owner here at the corner store behind me received an alarm alert on his phone for a broken glass door. Police say 32-year-old Kevin Patel told responding officers someone attempted to break in and left on an electric bicycle. But investigators say Patel didn't mention he had chased the 14-year-old down a half mile down the road, hit him at 30 miles an hour, made a U-turn, and left the critically injured teen in a ditch off Olive Grove and Coconut Grove. When we were putting two and two together, in addition to damage on the store owner's vehicle, it started to click. And detectives blatantly said, you're not telling us the truth. And so we need to know exactly what happened. And that is when the truth began to come out. That 14-year-old is still in Holmes Regional Hospital in critical condition. As for Patel, he's being held in the Brevard County Jail under no bond. Live in West Melbourne, Bailey Bockover, Fox 35 News.
