As tens of thousands of protesters filled
the streets of Paris on Tuesday,
largely peaceful demonstrations escalated
into violence later in the day.
As you can see behind me,
what started off as a peaceful demonstration in Paris today has once
again descended into scenes of violence as protesters
and possible rioters, we can't tell
you yet, clash with law enforcement authorities, with police.
As you can see, they are charging
at present to disperse protesters.
Since the beginning of France's student protests,
more than 6,800 people have been detained,
87% of which are minors.
According to figures from authorities,
an estimated 215 students have been injured and
800 police officers.
France's police watchdog has opened 36 investigations
into alleged police violence.
French police has come under heavy fire
for the methods that it has employed during these
student protests.
Rights groups have slammed law enforcement officers,
accusing them of using brutal methods
against children.
We've seen police fire smoke grenades,
tear gas, stun grenades.
Although police continue to use stun grenades,
the government suspended the use of a specific
after a 15-year-old pupil lost his hand during a police intervention
outside a school in northern France on the 5th of October.
What we've observed in our coverage
so far is that many protesters marched peacefully,
but those we questioned on the margins of Tuesday's clashes said they
believe that violence can be a legitimate response to police brutality.
If we manifest peacefully, nothing will change.
Some protesters said
they would join major
demonstrations
on Saturday against
the cost
of living crisis
and rising fuel prices in support of a wider social movement.
