A rally at Cornell University in support of Jane Doe.
The gathering at the elite institution
on Tuesday comes as it faces heavy criticism
from students and faculty over its response
to a 2024 sexual assault allegation.
Jane Doe claims she was raped
by seven students after she had consumed alcohol and drugs.
Kentucky is not
an invitation.
The invitation is not a license to rape.
The alleged 2024 gang rape reportedly took place here
at the Kai-Fi residence.
While some students want fraternities gone entirely,
Cornell announced it would be banning parties
at frat residences until the end of the year.
The move is unlikely to calm anger against the Ivy League school,
which has been blamed by university officials
for tolerating a culture of sexual violence.
Since state authorities reopened the case in September, New York's
governor has appointed a special prosecutor citing shortfalls
in protecting the alleged victim when the initial claims were made.
Cornell says it will work with state police to investigate incidents
and accelerate recommendations put forward
by a sexual violence task force.
A survey conducted by the university last year showed
that 35% of undergrad women reported
experiencing non-consensual sexual contact involving force
or incapacitation since starting
school.
