This week Jaime and Jonathan were inspired by the top tier memes from Arby's marketing to try their thanksgiving themed sandwich. Does the food live up to the hype? Is the new Zelda DLC even out yet? Listen and find out!
Jonathan and Jaime discuss their experiences with Arby's seasonal turkey sandwiches, the open-world mechanics of *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*, and a taste test of Mountain Dew Game Fuel flavors. The conversation blends food reviews with gaming nostalgia and a critique of corporate marketing strategies.
Game and Grub.
Hello and welcome to Game and Grub, where we play with our food.
I'm your host, Jonathan, and with me as always is my co-host, Jaime.
And today, uh, we had some food, and we played some games.
Yes.
As always.
As always.
What did, uh, what did you have?
Well, you know, the leaves are changing color,
there's cranberries all over the grocery stores.
It's fall.
It's fall. Everyone's sipping on pumpkin spice
and wearing their Ugg boots.
Starbucks just put out their holiday drinks.
You know, it tis the season.
Tis the season. So we figured we'd get into the Thanksgiving season.
And we went to Arby's, who has
these very special Thanksgiving sandwiches.
I had the Cajun Deep Fried Turkey Club, and you had the...
I had the Gobbler.
Yes.
And of course, you know, if you're in the mood for Thanksgiving,
Arby's is the first place that comes to mind.
They have the meats, I'm told.
No, but they've been doing this thing recently where they've
been expanding from roast beef the last couple of years.
I mean, they've always had like deli meat turkey,
but they're doing like hot meats, other hot meats.
And the deep fried turkey is fairly new.
I don't know how old the deep fried turkey sandwiches are,
the one that you got.
But I'm pretty sure it's the same turkey on the Gobbler,
which is a Thanksgiving dinner themed sandwich.
Which, let's talk about the turkey.
Because both of you and I, we're big Arby apologists.
Like, I feel that among our friends,
I think we're the only two that like it.
Oh, maybe.
Yeah.
There's some other people who like Arby's.
But I feel like when I'm looking out into the world
and I mention the word Arby's,
people, like, get a little squeamish.
They don't want to.
They're like, Arby's.
Ugh.
Yeah, there's, it's been maligned.
And I think, in some cases, for good reason.
but i feel that there are things
that Arby's does better than a lot of other places i think
their condiments amazing i don't think you can get better than
an Arby's sauce i think it's a
perfect condiment it's like the best iteration
of ketchup that anyone's ever made well i mean
it's barbecue sauce it's a barbecue sauce it's like
a vinegary uh well i guess it's like a North
Carolina barbecue sauce
then the vinegary kind well that's where they make Arby's is it's bar
becue no it's america's roast beef that's what Arby's
that Arby's i i that blew my mind recently and
that's really oh yeah is it america's i always assumed it
was like uh a child who couldn't say
barbecue no no so like i
was like i want some Arby's i'm putting america in there but it's not
america it's roast beef so r a r also you can
also read it as r and then b's uh it's a b so
roast beef Arby's it's like so Arby's
and so it was just Arby uh-huh and they're like well it's
Arby's okay i thought it was uh like amalgamation of barbecue
when they came out with the RBQ
sandwich sure because RBQ sounds more like
barbecue already yeah you just add a q at the
end and you just put a bar at the beginning here lies
the crux of Arby's that we kind of discovered
the hard way for lunch today is that when they deviate
when they try new things they fail i
think i i think that both of our sandwiches we'll we'll get
into what we didn't like about our
sandwiches in a second but like the beef
and cheddar it's onion bun roast beef cheddar sauce
and Arby's sauce and it's
a perfect sandwich phenomenal it's like what we usually get when
we go it's one of my favorite things even
as a kid like we'd go to Arby's the the beef and cheddar
is just like a like a hallmark oh totally
and you can't it's hard to beat the beef and cheddar
Every once in a while, I'll deviate when I visit Arby's
and I'll get something else and I'm never as satisfied
because the Arby's is such a great sandwich.
You know, you've got a place like Chick-fil-A.
You've got a place like In-N-Out where they
have like essentially one thing on the menu.
And they don't deviate from that because they've figured it out.
And I think the cynical thing that Arby's has done
in recent years is that they keep adding things
to the menu that don't really need to be there.
Just improve on what you have.
I think, you know, definitely go back to basics with the Arby's thing.
you do roast beef no one else does roast beef they've got
the roast beef market cornered they
just have to uh i think go back to the the essentials the you know
and it's hard to improve
on something like the like the beef and cheddar
because it's such a perfect sandwich yeah but
pretty much all of their roast beef sandwiches
are pretty phenomenal the brisket sandwich the
brisket sandwich is delicious
and that's just a sort of step up from your typical uh roast beef
totally uh and again a lot maybe they're trying to like i do think
though that the turkey if
If you just, if you just,
and I pulled off on the second half of the gobbler, just a
slice of the turkey, just to make sure that this wasn't.
What was on your sandwich?
All right.
So the gobbler, uh, is two slices of their,
uh, it's like a wheat, uh, bread.
Mm-hmm.
Um, it's their typical, like,
market fresh bread that they do for all their little, uh,
like, sandwiches.
Uh, on one side was spread, uh, some brown mustard.
Some really nice, uh, it wasn't.
Like a deli mustard.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Then there was some Swiss cheese, lettuce,
there was lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, turkey.
And on the bottom bun was this cranberry jelly, I'd call it.
It definitely wasn't, like, it was cranberry sauce adjacent,
but you had a little nibble.
It was extremely sweet.
It tasted like pure candy.
Yeah.
Like, it didn't really even have,
it tasted more like raspberries than it did like cranberries,
because it was just so incredibly sweet.
And when I've had Thanksgiving-themed sandwiches before,
or like a Thanksgiving-themed wrap,
or just making something with leftovers, that I'll usually use.
Like, I like cranberry sauce.
Yes.
Because it's got this sort of bitter tartness
that meshes well with the over-savory turkey.
Like a turkey that is done halfway decently,
and you have the dark meat.
It's extremely rich.
the cranberry sauce sort of balances that out
and you mix it with like some uh stuffing that's
maybe got some celery in it for a little crunch between uh
in a tortilla on a piece of bread
whatever it it's it's delicious it's
a perfect sandwich everyone i think people at this point
probably look forward to their leftover sandwich more than
the actual meal i know i do uh the turkey
carries it um on this sandwich the cranberry sauce
was doing too much work and i think it was
overpower and there was a lot of it on oh yeah there
was there were like two or three ounces
of the stuff it was like oozing out yep
and from what it looked like it looked like it was just
kind of shoehorned in there because other than
the turkey there's not too much thanksgiving about it
like it's yeah it was turkey swiss cheese tomato lettuce uh there
was bacon on it i forgot to
mention this sandwich has bacon on yeah uh
and then again dijon dijon mustard like it was a
I mean, it would make
a really great sandwich without the cranberry sauce.
It wasn't an improvement.
Usually cranberry sauce can tie a Thanksgiving sandwich together.
It matches all those flavors and balances them out.
Here it was just super overpowering.
So I have to knock points off of the Gobbler
as the sort of Franken-sandwich.
Though it seems kind of like an afterthought.
It doesn't know what it wants to be, I think.
And mine was a little bit more focused.
uh not to say it was better i had
the cajun deep fried turkey club now it's you had there are two
deep fried turkey sandwiches
and i believe it's the same turkey that's on the gobbler, is it a thick
slice of turkey, the turkey's pretty good like
a little brown kind of crust on the edge it was uh
kind of smoky i've had deep fried turkey i think it's overrated
but this did not taste like deep
fried turkey if you're going in thinking oh i'm
gonna get deep fried turkey you're gonna be
disappointed i think that's just a marketing term
that they that they decided to to cash in on but
um i mean what what does deep fried mean just
by definition well deep fried is you
drop the turkey in hot oil
and you fry it it's i think in general like it's a gimmick yeah does
the deep frying process like you're the you're
the resident you're our game and president cook
sure uh chef cook is maker cook is fine chef has chef's kind
of a loaded term and i would never
call myself a chef um does the deep frying process
do anything more to the outside anything more than
just the outside because they don't make
the outside like super crisp and short uh wonderful
but does it just like heat the inside like any like
an oven would it cooks it like any uh other
manner is going to do i find that the uh skin is overcooked
when you deep fry it um it gets uh
pretty crispy though it gets like potato chip crisp
but you can also get your skin pretty crispy
in the oven does anything happen to the inside of the turkey
though no meat no so the meat is
is pretty much the same these sandwiches they're
sliced sliced turkey yeah so the only bit of the
skin like the the reason you deep fry turkey
in my opinion uh is a piece with all the skin on it
is you'd have the uh the skin on breast
or you'd have the drumstick uh or like a wing or something
yeah and those those have the skin on it like you get
the full experience oh totally this is sliced
so it's just yeah just around the edges if there
was like a layer of like because i think you know
if you ask me what my favorite part of a turkey
is it's turkey skin i love really perfectly roasted
turkey skin i think it has a lot of flavor
and and it's just awesome um i have family that picks
it off their turkey and i'm like why would you
do that and but i'm more than happy that they do
because i get to pluck it off their plate
and i get to eat it um so if there was a layer they
would never do this but if they actually
in the sandwich took a layer of turkey skin and put it
on top of the actual turkey
then i could probably buy the turkey the deep fried turkey can see a
little bit more but what it tasted like
was just regular old deli meat but then they put this like
really horrible like spice mix in it
and luckily i didn't get it in every bite um i got it kind of
like near the end especially it was like
this weird uh blend of uh seeds and i got celery salt
which was not a flavor i wanted to eat in this sandwich
um i can see why they probably went for
it because it does kind of faintly taste like celery
and to a lot of people when you're cooking
like onions and celery for your stuffing that's kind
of like the Thanksgiving smell people think
Yeah, that's a combination.
I always feel like celery is more of a texture food than a flavor food.
Oh, totally, but the smell that it gives
when it's cooked off with some herbs.
So they're going for a classic family meal turkey vibe
with this turkey.
But it is, it's sliced turkey.
And it's not like their deli meat turkey,
like you'd get in a turkey sandwich if you got the turkey club.
Yeah,
they have like a lighter beef and cheddar you can get with turkey.
Yeah, it's not that turkey.
It's like a slice of turkey that you'd pull off of an actual bread.
And I gotta say, if it's not real turkey,
it's a pretty fair approximate.
It does feel like eating a slice of turkey breast.
It was definitely the king of the meal we had.
Yeah.
But that said, my sandwich was not very good.
It had deep fried onions, it had lettuce and tomato,
and then this weird Cajun sauce, which
did not taste very Cajun to me.
Okay.
I expected something kind of like a mayonnaise...
It had like some like Old Bay type seasoning, you know, that you
would get like at like a Long John Silver's or something like that.
I did not get that.
I don't even know how to describe the flavor other than
that weird kind of celery salt flavor.
And it wasn't terribly pleasant.
You said it was a little weak.
I feel like Cajun is a style of food that's supposed
to have some kick to it, like the Louisiana chicken at Popeye's.
Totally.
This is bland.
This is bland as heck.
um again i will say that the turkey was a high point
though um and i probably should have done
what you did you kind of gave up near the end
and you plucked off the turkey off your sandwich
which i thought was pretty inspired well i was i
was just trying to see if without the cranberry
sauce this sandwich uh was was still good did you have
a piece of turkey with just turkey with
cranberry sauce yeah was that okay um it
was all right it was just the uh the cranberry sauce was
so sweet yeah it didn't it didn't do what it's supposed
to do in that flavor combination i
touched your uh sandwich wrapper with like a finger
and just kind of took a little dab and
i tried that and that it was foul it was a foul cranberry sauce
and i did not enjoy it too too
too sweet on this turkey sandwich
was foul yeah i'm gonna turn off the mic in a second and have
a long talk with jonathan over uh his use of puns
because it's getting out of hand no no it's it's
fine um so i think we're both a little talked out about
these sandwiches i think it's time to rate
um how are we gonna rate these you know i discovered recently
and i don't know if anybody
knows this and i feel like i'm the last person
to know this but the guy who does the voiceovers
and the arby's commercials
is Ving Rhames celebrated actor Ving Rhames yeah so why don't
we make our rating system
Ving Rhames? Kind of like we did with
Dan from Del Taco?
It was Dan from Del Taco.
We called him Dave.
That was corrected. It was Dan from Del Taco.
It was Dan from Del Taco.
Actor Greg Brinkley.
And we also rated
based on Roman
Emperors. Roman Emperors for Little Caesars.
Nero, Caligula. You know what?
Ving Rhames in a cowboy hat.
We're going to rate
these sandwiches.
I'm just, you've painted a beautiful
word picture. Yeah, and I think it's gonna
make a great photoshop that I'm gonna try
to do. Yeah, cause now I'm picturing, it's not
just like Ving Rhames, it's his character
from Mission Impossible
where he's kinda like a, I've had it
with this ----, like
you guys are too ridiculous, I'm getting
too old for this, Ving Rhames
in a cowboy hat. Alright
I'm gonna, why don't you start with the
goblin? Well I, I wouldn't
dare cut Ving Rhames in half
Okay. Um
You know what?
I'll say this.
If you did cut Ving Rhames in half,
whatever half you pick could totally kick our asses.
Yeah, no.
I actually wouldn't be able
to get through cutting Ving Rhames in half because he would
just destroy me while I tried.
Oh, totally.
With his...
Not even with his...
Just by talking, he'd be able to scare you into...
Yeah.
It would be no contest.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm going to give...
And I'm taking into account the curly fries, which came with the meal.
You can't take it.
We're going to rate the sandwich.
Just the sandwich.
Just the sandwich.
All right.
Because curly fries are always delicious.
Like I said, Arby's wins.
Yeah.
Arby's wins automatically.
Like, just the curly fries would bump it up
to three out of five on its own.
Okay.
But not including the curly fries.
Because I want to give the sandwich credit
for its ability to stand on its own without
the cranberry sauce.
Like, you could order the gobbler with no cranberry,
and it would be a delicious sandwich.
But then it's not the gobbler.
It's this other thing that isn't a thing that exists.
I suppose.
I'm going to give it two out of five Ving Rhames and Cowboy Hat.
Two out of five Ving Rhames.
I got the Cajun Deep Fried Turkey Club.
I'm going to give it...
You know what?
I think I'm going to give mine also.
I'm going to give it two Ving Rhames.
We're going to have four Ving Rhames.
They can start a band if they want.
A country music band.
Kind of like a Hootie and the Blowfish situation.
Okay, okay.
A very bass-heavy country band.
Yes.
They all play bass and they all do vocals
Uh you wouldn't have
You wouldn't be able to do any like high
High Dolly Parton songs
No no no no
And I will always love you
That's Whitney Houston
What? No she that was her song
Whitney Houston covered it
Shaking my damn head
Yeah but who made it famous
Dolly Parton it was
It was a big hit when she did it
It was like what made her a star oh my god
We're not gonna go on a tangent with Dolly Parton
before we but we can't talk about Arby's we got
to touch on Arby's there's no how could how could
we do an episode of Game and Grub uh a podcast about food
and gaming and not just talk about
the juggernaut that is Arby's PR oh totally
their their meme game is so strong it's untouchable you
know i feel that are there are some companies
that are rushing to like copy yeah Arby's now
and they can't do it they can't they're not even close
because the only place that came close uh
just in terms of being entertaining was Wendy's yeah
the Wendy's twitter account was like sassily
reply but i'm talking like the kind of effort
that goes into an Arby's post and it's always timely
you know when they uh that when they when they
when uh just this last week they took all of the
guardians from Breath of the Wild yeah
and turned them into out of cutouts and so if you've been
living under a rock or uh don't know about Arby's uh online
because i don't they don't play these
on tv or no no no no it is exclusively on twitter facebook
and probably instagram probably all the
all the social media sites Arby's will will put up uh pictures videos
or ads uh that are gaming
or pop culture figures a lot
of times they're it's basically they they make it out of uh either
cardboard like Arby's wrappers uh sometimes
they'll use uh like Arby's sauce and horsey
sauce to like paint a picture sure it's very creatively done
that it's all done with basically
you could walk into an Arby's and recreate
this art oh yeah sometimes they do like hot glue and
a scalpel sometimes they
do like stop motion animation yeah it's really cool and some and
there are like a deep cuts too i remember one time
they did Half-Life 2 yeah like who is this for
they clearly know their audience yeah they i
mean they definitely know their audience uh
because i i mean there was a time i think it was it
was probably about a year ago uh because that's
when Pokemon Sun and Moon came out
and i remember uh got it at midnight and i was playing it with
my other friend who we uh we play pokemon tournaments
and stuff shout out to at that's
a plus one and so we were just playing through we kind
of just marathon the game to get to the end
to start training to start preparing for any tournaments we might enter
and so we were just
chilling uh several hours in to pokemon playthrough
and i saw a tweet from Arby's that was all the new
starters like drawn out in sauce and it said like
who do you pick and we stopped playing Pokemon and
we drove to Arby's and we had lunch yeah
and it works it totally works uh you know anytime i think
i'm not craving Arby's i'm usually craving Arby's
when i see one of those things and you know now
it's almost this weird uh tradition now where
a game will come out yep i'll after work i'll go
get it and then i'll get Arby's
because you know i will listen i know that it's all a cynical cash
grab i know that these companies are doing it
but at least it's high quality yeah you know no and
it definitely it takes time
and whoever is doing it uh like if i didn't go to Arby's if like the
if the effort that they put into this didn't pay off
for Arby's that person would be like fired
or they go in a different direction totally
so we know it's effective people share it people
respond to it it's great and it's not just uh games either
although the games is the part that
we focus on i mean there was uh one for like
the Westworld finale uh i saw one for JoJo's Bizarre
Adventure which was like a kind of a deep cut
for oh they do a lot of anime anyone who doesn't like
know that particular anime it was like
the recent episode i think they did a Dragon Ball Z Super one
that they just anything that's happening in pop like
something like is a semi-major event in
pop culture of any variety like it could
be music movies TV shows anime manga video games like
Arby's is on it and i think they deserve credit
for that totally plus they make good food Arby's
is the king of online memes skip
the turkey sandwiches go go for the beef go for the beef
and cheddar you can't beat the beef
and cheddar if you're on a budget get the sliders those are
pretty good also delicious uh there's a roast beef slider it's it's
their roast beef the most perfect
thing that they make uh and i think it's like a dollar fifty
so and when you go ask for extra
Arby's sauce because that stuff is amazing
on french fries all right you know what did we play
this week hold on when we come back we're gonna
get wild okay let's roll thank you for being a
friend travel down the road and back again
your heart is true you're a pal and a confidant and
we're back and we just spent about 10 minutes yawning
not because the show is boring because
it's not it's always high flying
but we both consumed turkey for lunch and because we think
it's actual turkey uh we're both getting
a little bit sleepy a little bit you know a little drowsy
so the tryptophan is definitely getting to us
but it's hard not to be excited when we're talking
Zelda: Breath of the Wild, one of my favorite games this year honestly
and this has been a big year
for games too, so oh especially like the the Switch
and Odyssey just came out, that's a fantastic game
uh i mean i've enjoyed i've enjoyed
so many games this year yeah it's a great and the year's not
even over, there's still some a few games
on the horizon that i'm looking forward to yeah uh we
will talk about those in future episodes of course
and you know we usually talk about we've talked
the last last couple episodes we talked about a very current game
or something that's in gaming
news currently like Stardew Valley just was ported
to the Switch uh Breath of the Wild DLC is coming
out this it might be out by the time this airs uh
so and that's the uh the second DLC for Breath
of the Wild which i mean it's pretty cool
that Nintendo is sort of jumping into the DLC market
and in the way that they are i think they started
on some Wii U games that was like the first time
ever that i recall Nintendo actually doing uh downloadable content
as sort of an expansion
to their games which other companies have been doing forever yeah
and they're i think they're
pretty respectable as far
as what you know how they handle DLC i remember that when uh Smash
Brothers for Wii U came out there was a lot of great DLC there
and it was pretty affordable and
it wasn't yeah shoved down our throats
and it wasn't something that could have easily have been
in the actual game that they just held back
to be you know terrible yeah when some of the stuff was
fans voted on
what characters should be in Smash
Brothers, and those characters were added to
Smash Brothers. Yeah, except for Geno.
He got a weird suit, though.
A weird Mii suit, because he was always
on the top of the charts, but
the logistics of getting Geno in a Smash Brothers
game would have been a little bit complicated.
But we're not going to talk about Geno. We're going
to talk about Zelda,
because that was a big game.
And I think everyone's kind of
talked out about Zelda, but I think what
we want to touch on is
you know it's different than a lot
of other Zeldas uh it's different than every other Zelda
pretty much yeah i mean it's got elements
from every other Zelda sure uh it definitely feels
Zelda-ish it's the first one with like uh quest trackers
and the thing about Zelda is a lot of
times when it takes chances it's not good i think probably
the most maligned Zelda is Zelda 2 the
Adventure of Link which is you know i don't think
it's even playable i it's it's a rough playthrough
I mean, I know some people who get through it,
and they like it, but they also, they like weird RPGs.
Like, they're not, they wouldn't,
like, play every Zelda game like I do.
They play Zelda 2 because Zelda 2
is similar to other games that they play.
Yeah, it's, even, like, looking at it, it's hard to even look at it.
It's not, it's not a nice game.
And then, another one that I don't think is a bad game,
but certainly maligned, is Majora's Mask.
where it kind of deviated from the Zelda pattern
and introduced this really challenging time concept.
And Majora's Mask is one of those games
that you either love it or hate it.
I guess I haven't experienced that out in the world,
mostly because I love it so much
that when I talk about it and love it,
if other people hate it,
they either keep it to themselves
or I block it out of my memory immediately.
And to that effect, I don't hate it, but it's not for me.
Okay.
I've tried playing it.
I bought the remake when it came out.
Yeah.
Which did actually make it a little bit more streamlined,
a little bit easier to pick up and play.
But it was still too hard.
I'm also not very good at video games.
Okay.
I don't...
If a game starts feeling like homework, I usually clock out.
And that's what Majora's Mask felt like.
I do remember it being a bit challenging towards the end.
um and some of the puzzle mechanics those and it there
was just there was a little bit of added
pressure with the time mechanic
but basically uh you could reset the cycle i've i've played it
through on the challenge mode where uh you have
to do the whole game in four cycles the first one
uh is the Deku Deku Link cycle so it barely counts uh
because you basically have to go through a
full cycle there but you have basically three times
to to go through uh to to finish the game
And you don't have to 100% it.
Although I think it's possible to 100%.
You get all the masks.
But I don't think you have to do literally everything.
I, oh.
See, Zelda Breath of the Wild is challenging,
but it's also, it's forgiving.
It's, you can easily take little bites.
You can easily pace yourself.
You can easily make Link, you know, stronger and more,
and get better weapons.
Yeah, I had a friend who was telling me that, like,
This whole game is hard until they bought the knight's armor,
which is, like, the first...
One of the first armors that you could buy
in one of the first towns that there's armor in,
is just this metal armor
that just makes you much more durable.
And that's towards the beginning of the game.
You only got three hearts.
It's easy to get hurt enough to accidentally die.
Oh, totally.
But the game's pretty forgiving about you dying.
Here's a good question.
How many times did you die before you left the first area?
oh i mean i explored a lot uh i died a lot more times
on master mode trying to get through the
first area okay uh because you basically can't defeat enemies
if we talk about the dlc master
mode uh uh basically all of the enemies uh
your basic enemy model has tiers there's like the red
one's the weakest and there's like blue and black
and white uh they were like they started off black
uh or blue or they started off like a high level
so if you just have like your stick like the
weapons around the starting area
are just like sticks and stuff.
Or rusted swords.
You cannot do enough damage, even if
you dodged every time and hit every
thing, all your weapons would break
before you actually got through their health bar.
So you've gotta knock them off cliffs or just dodge
them. And so I died a lot in
the beginning of that. The beginning area, I was still
learning the game. I fell off a cliff
several times. I
don't know how many times I've died,
because I stopped counting, but I spent
the first time, and this isn't in the
DLC. This is the regular old game.
I spent about two hours
in just the first area.
Just because I... Well, first of all,
I really wanted to kind of explore everything.
And when you explore everything, you know, the game
lets you go anywhere you want.
And there's a lot of places in the first
area that, if you're not prepared, you will
die instantly. You will die quickly
either because of frostbite.
You only have three hearts at that point.
Or you will die because the enemies will get
you really good.
Yeah, I definitely would recommend...
Because I'm the type of person who,
in a game that is sort of sandbox, like Breath of the Wild is,
but that gives you mission markers, whether it's, I mean,
there's so many games in the last 10 years have had that model.
The sort of GTA Assassin's Creed, like here's your open world,
here's your quest marker, but you can do side missions everywhere else.
Spider-Man 2 was a game that I played a ton of,
and it had that basic sandbox model.
It tells you, like, go to the Temple of Time.
The first thing you do, go to the Temple of Time.
It's right over there. It's not far.
I wanted to go literally everywhere else first,
just in case there was a secret that I wanted to collect
before I continued with the main...
And guess what? There is a secret. There's a secret everywhere.
That's the thing about Breath of the Wild.
Every inch of it is covered in secrets and covered in something useful.
I don't know if there's a tile in any
of the massive world of Hyrule in this game that
you can't get at least one pretty big thing,
whether it's a Korok Seed, whether it's a
heart container, whether it's a weapon or a piece of armor or whatever.
But the game looks beautiful.
It sounds beautiful.
There's so much to do.
There's so much to do, even if you're not doing anything.
Yeah.
There were times that I had an hour to play,
maybe, or not a lot of time.
Like, if I wanted to do a dungeon or go to a bunch of shrines,
I usually made sure if I'm playing that I have several hours
to play if I'm doing, like, a gaming session.
But when I'm just pulling out my Switch in, like, handheld mode
or I only have a couple minutes to play, like, a half hour
or an hour maybe, I would just go and, like, harvest mushrooms.
Or I would stock up on supplies for my next adventure.
And that was fun for me.
Yeah, it's got, like, a weird almost Oregon Trail vibe.
like you have to you know before you set out it's good
to start making a few potions it's good to
uh cook a few uh you know spicy pepper steaks
or or some a monster cake or some crepes or something
to get you going so that way you are uh prepared
for for your big adventure through whether you're
marching up the mountains or yeah or down into the desert it's
so so so great i am a big defender
of the game i know i know there are a few Zelda fans
that didn't like the direction because it
was so wildly different i like the chances that Nintendo took
and i hope to see another Zelda
Breath of the Wild like game in the future what would you like
to see in a sequel if they do go
back well i want to argue with those people that you're talking about
who say it's so different
because i don't think that it is that different i would argue
that this game feels and plays
a lot more especially in the freedom aspect like
the original Legend of Zelda in the original
Legend of Zelda old man tosses a sword at you
and you free roam the map you can go wherever you want
you can do the dungeons except for a couple
in any order there's not a there's not like a set
you have to do this one first this one's first
this one next like there's a wreck there's a
there's a good order to do them in yeah
because you'll collect the items from them but there's
not a there's not a requirement like
the other other Zelda games have been much more linear
Wind Waker in particular I'm thinking like there you
do all of the dungeons in a very particular
order except for the two temples but there's only two of them
and you just do one after the other
whichever one you decide that I think
the non-linear aspect is something that they are
are going back to I think the original Zelda game you know
was more like that Link Between Worlds
also is pretty non-linear like once you reach
a certain point you would basically got to you know
go to whatever dungeon you wanted to at that point yeah
and i think they kind of brought that they
may i mean they took it to the next level
with Breath of the Wild because Breath of the Wild
is like completely non-linear i think
um a different type of weapon durability system
in a sequel is what i would like to see yeah
not that i dislike the weapon system in this
i just i ended up favoring some weapons over others
because i know i can always find
like a Lizalfos blade, or I can always
find a Soldier's Claymore,
but the Edge of Duality, I've only ever found
two of those, and I was so afraid to
lose durability on them that they're
hanging up in my house. I hate the weapon
system.
It got old real quick.
And, you know, I made
due, and I finally, you know, got
used to it. But
that's gotta go.
There either has to be a system where I'm able to
forge weapons myself. Yes.
like if i can if i can uh you know add some sort
of like durability by like you know pounding in
some iron or diamond or whatever into the weapon okay
but every weapon what what you know no matter
how good or bad it is if it's gonna break
on me i oh it's such a it's such a hassle and i and it's
it's one of those uh hassles that feels like homework
and i don't it's not fun for me so uh
definitely if there was one thing that i don't like about
this game it's the weapon durability
yeah and i mean and honestly that's
the only thing i don't like yeah i don't i i am much
more forgiving about it than you
are because i understand like it's a procuring site type of
thing yeah um and the weapons that i
do like i keep them stored in my house or stored in the
back of my inventory and if things like really start
to get dangerous then yeah i'll pull out
my guardian sword which i've been saving for like a bad event
but that's it's the annoying way that
i play video games is that uh you'll like even
in an rpg you'll get something like a phoenix down
or a potion or uh something like that's a good item uh
and i will be like nervous to use it
because like what if what if there's like
a dangerous part that i need to save this for
and at the end of the game i have all
these like cool things that i never used because i was too
scared to to use them and so that's the same way
that all i think i mentioned the edgy duo there's
a couple other like really there's only like a few
of them in the game uh good weapons uh flaming
broadswords are not too easy to find
and i i have one of those uh that i'm afraid to use but
you know when you find the silver lionel
and he, you didn't mean to find him, you didn't want to
find him but he has found you
and uh you gotta take him down, you know it's time to reach into
the back of your inventory, pull out your good weapons, I
also missed a lot of the traditional
Zelda weapons that you get in a lot of games
um yeah I, I missed that, I would love it if you know
it wasn't just melee weapons, I wish that you got some kind
of tactical weapons that you get in a
lot of the other games, you know
in the typical dungeon progression system and I would actually
like a return to the dungeon progression system, I
I yeah I don't hate, I don't hate that we only had
four, you know, four real dungeons, I don't mind
the shrines, I thought the shrines were a good idea but
I would have easily traded in
you know, 40 shrines
to get two more dungeons.
two more standard dungeons
and dungeons that didn't run together
I thought the Guardian Beasts kind of
you know, after...
they did. They felt too similar
when I went to the Shadow Temple
versus the Spirit Temple, they feel completely
different. Oh, totally. Just no Water Temples
we never need to play a
Water Temple again. I don't think anybody does
the Water Temple I played through
most recently was uh the Twilight Princess water temple yes
and i and i enjoyed it yes
and bring back Ganondorf bring back i miss him it's
been so long since we've actually seen the
the last time was Twilight Princess i think it's been Twilight Princess we've seen
and i don't want to you know
spoiler alert the last uh boss of this is uh well they talk about it
in the game Calamity Ganon but
it's basically just like a big you know shadow monster like it's
not well it's the i think when
what Skyward Sword did was sort of gave us
the origin of the for lack of a better term the
Legend of Zelda yeah yeah uh that it's like
a cyclical thing like there was an evil guy
who had like the orange hair and was like
so evil it's the only way to defeat him such a stupid
story because it's cyclical like yeah oh
and that's i mean i why i like it i think it makes
sense it's great for a video game okay Ganondorf came
from this guy but where did this guy come
from well this it was the it was the origin like you
were just you were just a dude chillin who is
who is Demise who is Demise he's just a just
a just a bad just just a spicy boy okay and who
he's a spicy boy who is who
is Ganondorf uh king of Gerudos yeah he's the king he was the
reincarnation there's one there's one born every 100 years he has
a backstory he's got a motivation
that he kind of touched on in Wind Waker
He's the reincarnation of
Demise's essence. Yeah, but what is Demise's
motivation? He's just a bad guy.
There's nothing there. It's a non-
character. I was hoping
oh, we're going to get to see the origin of
Zelda, but again, it was
ham-fisted. It was
as far as I'm concerned, that wasn't the origin
because unless you tell me where Demise came
from, it's not an origin. You're just
setting the bar back a little.
You're right. I would like a more
complex villain in the next Zelda game.
Or give us Ganondorf. Ganondorf is a perfect
video game villain.
I would love to get more on him.
When you're fighting him, the speech that he makes
right before you fight him in Wind Waker.
It's one of the best written
speeches in all of video game history, I think.
When he talks about how
it was all...
He wasn't just fighting for himself, he was fighting for his people.
And, you know, there's even...
I won't get into it.
You're a Ganondorf apologist?
I am a... Listen, Ganondorf did nothing wrong.
I'll say it right here.
uh you and my brother would get along yeah he mains ganondorf
in any possible that too oh you
just reminded me i i hate i was about to curse i hate
that ganondorf this amazing character
is a Captain Falcon clone he could have easily gotten
an awesome moveset uh for himself i would
love my dream and this is why i'll never do it
because i like it i would love it if uh old timey
trident Ganon was a character
in Super Smash Brothers oh you know the blue yeah pig monster
with like his trident yep that would be amazing uh they won't do it
because i want it maybe you'll
hit the smash ball and turn into that i don't want
to smash i want an actual character that
has a trident and he uses lightning attacks he could
be the size of uh King Dedede or Bowser totally
and he would be like a heavy character just like them
but he'd have like a trident uh but let's not
talk about our game wishes that's that'll we'll
be here till tuesday uh you know it is tuesday
technically it is Tuesday
but I'm talking
we record on Saturdays
we release on Tuesdays
so let's rate
what are we going to rate
uh
oh yeah
Breath of the Wild
who's your favorite
who's your favorite character
in Breath of the Wild
uh
in Breath of the Wild
my favorite character
what's the name
of that Goron fail son
oh
uh
Daruk
no Daruk's the
Daruk's the big guy
um
shoot I don't know
okay we're just gonna
we're just
let's just rate
Breath of the Wild
in Goron fail sons
because that's how much of a fail son he
is we don't even know his name well my uh Sidon Sidon
is my favorite character yeah Prince Sidon yeah
he's pretty cool i'm still disappointed that
they're giving amiibos to every other character
but Prince Sidon he's the only one who deserves
an amiibo with his brilliant his nice guy pose how many fail sons
are you giving this uh oh five
out of five five out of five yeah i i'm i still play
this game i'm still gonna jump into it
i open it up i just i want to sit in my house i want
to go collect an iron shroom i want to go
just fight Lynels this game uh is something
that like i'll i'll keep picking up and play and i
don't do that for other Zelda games like i haven't
uh i haven't touched Ocarina of Time in a while
uh i haven't touched Wind Waker since uh i replayed through
the HD version um but this
one i keep coming back to and it's you know it's
been several months i'm gonna give it four out of
five okay uh it is great it is what i wanted out
of a Zelda game i wanted something new but i wanted it
to feel reasonably similar uh i don't i like i like it
when Nintendo takes chances but i don't
like it when i take too big a chance i think i think
this was a very uh measured chance so i'm
gonna give it four, for and fail sons, it's got a few annoyances
but i think that the next time
around if they do decide to go the Breath
of the Wild route again um i will i will be more than
happy to uh to jump in again
and do that all right you know what we're both very sleepy yeah
i think we could both use uh some game fuel absolutely
so when we come back let's get a
caffeinated beverage when we come back we're gonna
we're gonna go we're gonna go shoot up some uh
some caffeine we're gonna do the do we're gonna
do the do and then we're gonna be back and we're
gonna talk about it oh man oh man
oh man what am i gonna do Monsters
they're here they found me
and we're back and we're wired oh
so wired like oh my gosh i'm not jittery yet neither am i because
i i mainline espresso every day
and i didn't have my coffee this morning before coming but
i think i'm covered for at least tomorrow
because we both had uh we tried two different
game fuel flavors but yeah game fuel uh is the style
of Mountain Dew that uh sometimes comes
along as a promotional item for different video games uh we had
a tropical smash which is blue
no tropical smash is the yellow oh tropical smash
was and uh art i think it was Arctic Thunder was
the blue one these are two i think they're new flavors
of game fuel because i haven't seen them
before and I will often glance at the Mountain Dew section of a store
or a bodega or a 7-Eleven
as they're sometimes called
and I'll see the Mountain Dews that are there and I don't usually
see these two particular flavors.
And I always walk past the Mountain Dew section as quick as I
can because it's haunted to me. I don't like Mountain Dew.
I don't, you know, I love soda.
it's my vice I think
because soda is pretty unhealthy
but the one I won't drink
is Mountain Dew and all of its
different iterations because they're usually
super super super sweet
it's like drinking maple syrup
it's not fun but
that said I do enjoy
Mountain Dew I'm a big
fan of Mountain Dew Classic
I'll drink a Code Red
I like the original Game Fuel that came out
I want to say the first game
that GameFuel was
paired with was Halo 3.
We don't do research on this show.
We do research after this show to give you
a solid corrections schedule
next week. It's better to ask
for apologies than to ask for permission.
I believe it's
better to ask forgiveness
than permission. There we go. See?
If I did research, I would know that, but I don't
do research, so I just went for it.
Probably ask permission a lot. Never.
Never? Never. Okay.
well I believe it was Halo 3
and it was uh the orange game fuel it's like bright dark it's like
a red orange uh in color it's uh orangish
in flavor more orange than like the typical
Mountain Dew flavor and it has like Mountain Dew
already highest caffeine content of any soda
that you can get today game fuel like five grams more caffeine
per serving than Mountain Dew so
For someone who's going to be gaming all night,
or if you're going to be playing a lot of video games,
you need to be awake and alert and ready to score some points.
Game Fuel is definitely a plus,
and I love the original flavor of Game Fuel.
I recently found out today,
I probably remembered from the last time I was at an Arby's,
but today we went to Arby's, as discussed earlier in this episode.
They have the orange Game Fuel in the fountain.
I don't know if that's at Arby's everywhere,
or if it's just our local Arby's,
but GameFuel is alive and well, because it would disappear.
It was out for Halo 3, it would disappear until,
like, the next big game.
I remember, I think they brought it back
for one of the World of Warcraft expansions.
I think this is for, I believe, Need for Speed,
and then the Shadows of Mordor.
And it's just Xbox One games, it looked like,
were what it was paired with.
I know Xbox does a lot of stuff with Mountain Dew and Doritos.
I don't want to burn any bridges here.
But anytime I think of an Xbox One gamer,
I think of a guy who chugs a lot of Mountain Dew.
Like, I picture their game rig.
Like, they're always,
they're either eating Doritos or drinking Mountain Dew.
I think a lot of the, like,
food that is aimed at gamers is really just aimed at Xbox One players.
I think that's all marketing.
I think the image in your head is from a commercial
for all three of those products at once.
Because I know for at least the last seven years, Doritos,
Mountain Dew, and Xbox have kind of been teamed up
as marketing partners that they cross-promote.
You'll have instant win giveaways for an Xbox console
or a year's supply of Doritos or something.
um the joke uh when you take it to the absurd level
of like uh games these days you know with
their microtransactions or you've got um map packs that you gotta buy
or day one dlc yes all sorts of
stuff that people like negative about gaming
when you take that to the absurd level uh though we're
talking there were jokes i remember about the xbox one
because it needed to originally be connected
to the internet like all the time
and that uh in a year you'll play on your xbox it's like
Please enter your Mountain Dew code from the Mountain Dew
that you've opened for this session.
If you don't open a Mountain Dew this session,
you cannot play your game.
Let me blow your mind.
Uh-oh.
I think all gamers should have their token soda.
And in the early 90s, the Shasta Corporation made Mario sodas.
You've never seen these before.
No.
There's Mario soda from Shasta.
From Shasta.
Like Shasta Cola.
The flavors were Mario Punch.
prince toadstool cherry luigi berry and yoshi apple
and they were smaller and they all had
vitamin c in them so you got a little bit
of vitamin c with your soda but let me show you
let me show you the cool cans oh
and yoshi being apple uh makes sense oh totally apples colored red
they're his favorite flavor so what i'm saying is mountain dew is gross
and i don't want to drink it
I disagree.
But I want a Mario Soda.
We're mainly Nintendo gamers.
When it comes to console gaming, we play Nintendo more than anything.
Yes.
I'm looking at your Switch right now.
I don't see a PS4 in this room.
If you look deep into that box,
way to expose where we're recording also, by the way.
If you look deep into a box somewhere,
you'll see a PS3 that's not hooked up.
Well, there you go.
But you're still a gen behind it, you know.
Yes.
I try to stay current on gaming, but the games that I enjoy,
I haven't like there hasn't been a game
that has come out on another console besides
a Nintendo console that has made me
want to buy a game that made me
want to buy it. I'll probably buy one down the line
but for now. The last
Assassin's Creed didn't strike
me as exciting
and most of the stuff I can get on
PC anyway so
I'll still try to stay current just as
a gamer but I'm primarily
playing Nintendo games so yeah
Nintendo Soda. I will say that I do
like the Conceited Gamer feel though. It's
a way to get caffeine in your body yep it's sweet
it's pretty uh inoffensive but it's it's it's got
utility you know yeah a lot of times
with these games you're up all night and you're playing them
i know i was up till two one with mario odyssey
and if i had game fuel i'd probably be up all
night, so what are we gonna specifically talk about
because if we just rate Game Fuel I would rate
it very highly, but I'm particularly interested
in your opinion on these two new flavors the yellow
Tropical Smash and the blue Arctic, I believe it's Arctic, I tried
the Tropical Smash, no no, I tried
I keep getting confused, I tried the Arctic Thunder one, blue one
the blue one, I tried the blue one
first I smelt it first, kind of like a sommelier does
with a good wine, you know, I wanted to kind
of take in the whole thing
and the first time it touched my tongue it tasted like pure sugar
and then it kind of gave me like
a weird like cough syrup aftertaste, okay, did not enjoy that
and it felt thicker, so I think that it almost uh has
a little bit of a like a syrupy like, not not
nearly syrup but it it did feel heavier on the tongue
and I did not enjoy that, I did not enjoy
that one at all, and then I I was after
that that bad experience I was like, okay, what's next, do I
have to try this next one, I I decided I had
to because we gotta be thorough here, um yeah, if
you're gonna make me hot Cheetos
on the last episode, I'm gonna make you drink Mountain Dew
on the next one.
And I'm happy that you did
because the Tropical...
What was it?
Tropical...
Tropical Smash.
Tropical Smash
was pretty good.
It was kind of mango-y.
And again,
it was too sweet.
But if it was...
If there was like a diet
Game Fuel,
Tropical Smash,
I could see myself
drinking that.
Okay.
But it was still rather sweet.
Maybe cut it with some
club soda or something.
That's not a bad idea.
I do drink a lot of club soda.
But I gotta say,
I am super...
I'm like...
really pumped right now i feel really alert
uh i hope i don't crash later i probably will
it definitely with the turkey
and the game fuel like i i'm i am ready for some some video games
totally let's play um i
but i do i do like the conceit it's effective uh no one can say that
how did you like it um so i tried the tropical smash first
and i neither of these i like as much
as regular Game Fuel or regular Mountain Dew, for that matter.
But I think I prefer the Tropical Smash to the Arctic Thunder.
I tried the Tropical Smash first.
I thought it was like, I was like, whoa, that's a little off.
It reminded me of, like, some of those, because it's really fruity.
I was getting a strong, like, mango.
I think that's one of the tropical fruits in there is mango.
Or some sort of artificial flavor that resembles that.
And it was, it was all right.
I might, I might cut that with, like, some grenadine or something.
uh i don't know we got like a little chair maybe mix it
with some code red uh because i feel like
it needed, there's something missing from it
to make it taste amazing uh and then i tried
the Arctic Thunder and it's weird that i felt
the Arctic Thunder was a little lighter like it felt
like uh like there wasn't much
and it wasn't great it didn't it didn't taste amazing it wasn't a bold
because the tropical punt
the Tropical Smash sorry it's called i imagine it's called smash
because the flavor really smashes your palate
because it was a very bold flavor.
It was very fruit.
It was a very strong flavor.
Compared to the Arctic Mountain Dew Game Fuel,
it was much bolder,
and so I didn't enjoy the Arctic Game Fuel as much.
I will finish them both later, definitely,
but I would, in my head,
just wish that I had your typical red-orange Game Fuel.
Okay, how are we going to rate these Mountain Dews?
Hmm.
what scale do you use for a soda remember the xbox
the original xbox i do and it had these like
massive controllers that were as big as like
a condo like you needed like to have super big
hands to use them just these just these hunks
of hardware i don't feel like the xbox controller
was that much bigger than the 360 controller it was really big
so we're gonna rate it out of
really big uh xbox controllers classic xbox
controllers i think would be a good rating
system for this okay so rating
the new Mountain Dew Game Fuel flavors uh the yellow one and the
blue one yeah i'm gonna have to go two out
of five xbox controllers they weren't they weren't great
I'm gonna go
on the yellow one
the tropical one
I'm gonna go
three out of five
okay
and on the blue one
I'm going one out of five
alright
but I will say this
I don't think I'm going
back to these
well you don't
you wouldn't go to
your Coke Zero Sugar
is your
Coke Zero Sugar
is my jam
and I don't see myself
deviating from that jam
anytime soon
until next time

I mean, we're kind of busy.
Maybe just keep that to yourself.
I wouldn't mind reading a few one-stars.
I wouldn't mind reading a few one-stars.
You know what?
I think the worst thing that anyone

suggestion uh from uh from SoundCloud somebody left
a comment that says you guys should do Arby's
because they have really good video game content type stuff
and so we took that advice and we went
to Arby's but in the future we'd like
to you know maybe answer some questions uh or read fan mail
