AI GeneratedSeattle police are searching for a suspect after a fatal shooting of a gas station clerk in Belltown. This incident is part of a recent surge in violent crimes, including drive-by shootings in Georgetown and Kerry Park, sparking urgent discussions among city leaders regarding public safety and the need for increased police staffing.
24 hours after a deadly shooting at a gas station near the base
of Seattle Space Needle, police are still searching for the suspect.
The case is the most recent in a string
of deadly shootings where the suspects get away.
Fox 13's Taylor Winkle is live from Belltown
with how city leaders are responding to safety concerns.
Good morning, Taylor.
Yeah, Erin, so it's just a little more than 24 hours ago
that the clerk here at this 76 gas station was shot and killed.
And the red crime scene tape that's still strung up there
this morning really illustrates the issue of public safety
the city's grappled with since the summer.
Police say the suspect here bought something,
shot the clerk, and then left the scene.
That was Tuesday.
Over the weekend, we reported on a drive-by shooting
at an adult entertainment club in Georgetown.
The security guard there was killed on Sunday.
A woman working in that club was also shot.
And the night before that, a shooting at Kerry Park ended
with a 17-year-old in custody and two others in the hospital.
These shootings emphasize the broader public safety concern the
Seattle shooting brought to the table that ended with the mayor
in question by the city council and the chief of police out of a job.
At least one suspect in that deadly shooting is still on the run.
A 15-year-old is in custody and another suspect is dead.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell says she's working with Seattle Police and
City Council and budgeted for 66 more officers.
The numbers are good.
That doesn't do a whole lot of reassuring
when you wake up to a headline like the clerk being shot.
But there certainly are cases where they have
an idea of who somebody might be or
the investigation is ongoing,
but they can't refer you because there's not enough
evidence to bring it to court.
That was King County Prosecuting Attorney's
Office Public Information Officer Casey McNersey,
who you just heard from there saying that even
though it feels like we're seeing many homicides
right now, the numbers are still down for King County as a whole.
We also heard from council
member and public safety chair Bob Kettle on this in a statement.
He wrote Seattle Center and
Belltown have experienced gun violence
and now our iconic Kerry Park in Queen Anne as well,
44 shots fired, two gunshot victims to Harborview,
another neighborhood traumatized. So a charging
decision is expected in the Cary Park shooting today.
We started the year off with those figures
from King County. We're gonna talk more about
those in our next hour. In the meantime,
those Seattle police want to hear from you.
If you know anything about any of these homicides,
call their violent crime tip line.
I'll send it back to you guys in the studio.
