There are new questions about the federal investigation
into Democratic Congresswoman
Ilhan Omar. The Trump administration
is reportedly examining whether the Minnesota lawmaker
obtained her American citizenship fraudulently.
New reporting suggests that some of those same
allegations were reviewed years ago.
Alexandria Hoff has the latest from Washington this morning.
Good morning, Alexandria. Good morning, Desiree.
The result of this investigation could far exceed
standard criminal charges.
Reuters reports that the Trump administration is exploring
whether the probe could lead to Omar losing
her citizenship, possibly being deported.
At this point, she has not been charged with a crime.
A federal investigation into one
of President Trump's biggest critics is growing, and now
new questions about whether
the government has enough evidence to make its case.
I think she's a terrible person.
I think she's a terrible congresswoman. I don't think she
loves our country at all, but I don't take her position.
Investigators are examining whether Congresswoman Ilhan Omar
or her family provided false information
on immigration documents decades ago,
including questions about her age when she became an
American citizen.
One is establishing that her father was naturalized in the first place.
So far we don't have evidence of that.
But here's the twist.
The Washington Post reports federal officials
reviewed similar allegations during Trump's
first term and found insufficient evidence of wrongdoing.
Omar denies any wrongdoing,
calling the search of her home political intimidation.
Federal prosecutors are also investigating
Omar's financial disclosures.
We're looking at the facts.
Based upon the facts, we'll follow them wherever they take us.
Republicans say the investigation should be allowed to play out.
No one is above the law in our system,
and apparently this was a long series, a long investigation.
But with Election Day approaching, the timing is under scrutiny,
and the Justice Department is defending its decision to move forward.
Well, a federal judge signed off on the search
of Omar's Washington home earlier this week.
Several legal restrictions were put in place,
like mandatory independent screening before
seized materials can be reviewed
and protections for the congresswoman's legislative work.
Desiree.
And beyond the question of her citizenship
and status in the immigration documentation
probe right now and the search related to her home,
what other details have come out
surrounding her financial disclosures?
Yeah.
Well, really, the bottom line of that,
it is about the assets that were disclosed several
years ago.
The congresswoman had put $30 million on there
for her and her husband together that was
later amended to $100,000.
Her staff has chalked that up to a paperwork error.
So these investigators,
they're looking into that and really what was disclosed properly,
what was not.
Interesting.
All right, Alexandria, we appreciate your time this morning.
Have a great Friday.
Thank you.
You too.
