Video Summary
AI GeneratedA freight train derailment occurred just before 4 a.m. in the Ashburn neighborhood on the city's southwest side. Approximately seven to nine empty CSX freight cars went off the tracks near 75th and Central Park Avenue. There were no injuries, no hazardous material leaks, and no affected road crossings. Investigators are currently on-site to determine the cause of the accident.
Let's get back to this train derailment here.
We've been following this breaking news out
of the city's southwest side.
Yeah, we understand it caused as many as nine cars to go off the track.
So we're checking in with Brittany Tulis, who is live there
in the Ashburn neighborhood with the very latest for us.
Brittany?
Yeah, guys, the sun is up and we are now getting
a lot better look at this derailment.
I'm counting about seven cars from where I'm seeing.
And earlier this morning, I said at some point we'll see some type
of investigators out walking the rails.
Well, we're seeing them out here now.
They started walking a little further south down these rails
and now they're walking north up the Central Park block and you can
see they got a flashlight and they're kind of looking at what happened
and just take a look at how far these cars have fallen from the tracks.
They were on these tracks here and then when you look further down,
you can see them kind of splitting those utility poles
and they're even kind of crinkled up.
It looks like they kind of hit something in the very front
and it kind of caused them to snake a little bit
as they were running into each other.
And I believe what we're looking at down here in the southern part
of the Central Park Avenue might be the end of this derailment.
That's kind of where it ended and it started all the way up there.
But you can just see how these cars
are completely on their sides, actually.
This morning when it was dark out, I wasn't sure if these were
the freight-carrying cars that are a little lower to the ground.
But, no, we were actually looking at the top of these freight cars.
These are owned by CSX.
It's a freight company here.
And you can see the cars are empty.
there was doesn't seem to be any loads on these cars
and we did hear from the company
CSX, a spokesperson from the company saying
this happened just before 4 a.m right at 75th
and Central Park Avenue that's where we are right now
to give you an idea 79th and Kedzie is the
closest major intersection to where we're standing
um good news that there are no injuries related
to this derailment and there are no crossings affected
so that means drivers you're not going
to be stopped at a train kind of stop on the rails here
so no crossings are affected also
So there's been no hazmat leaks
or spills related to this derailment here.
And again, from what we're looking at,
these cars don't look like they had anything on them this morning.
We also could tell that the first
car we saw derailed wasn't carrying anything,
but it was unclear if any of the other
derailed cars had anything on them.
But it looks like they may have been empty as well.
Now, what we're still waiting to learn is what caused this derailment.
We still don't know that.
Again, it looks like it started up there.
They may have kind of hit something.
It caused the cars to kind of crinkle.
and then this back here is what we're seeing
is the end of that derailment so we're still unclear
what caused this also we're still on the waiting
to hear a timeline for when this could be fixed
because all nine cars do have to be righted
or at least removed from the tracks but most likely
righted and again some of them sitting
on their sides they are thousands of pounds of metal here
so they got to be lifted up and then this train
car has to be moved so this may be like this for
quite a while guys i will be out here throughout the morning
and again watching to see what these
investigators kind of pay attention to as well.
We've seen them just walking and shining a light
on so far. We haven't seen them really pay attention
to a specific area yet. So we'll
be keeping an eye on that, but I'll send it back to you guys for now.
