After a chilly Thursday, the fall weather
roller coaster continues tomorrow.
Yeah, temperatures will be back
in the 80s ahead of another weekend cool down.
So let's get a first check of your forecast
with meteorologist Mike Thomas.
All right, Jim, we were up and then we were down today.
And now we're going back up tomorrow before we plunge
down even more heading into the upcoming weekend.
Today in the books, not a terrible day at 77 degrees.
However, when did we hit that temperature?
Just after midnight, just before 1230 in the morning.
Since that point, it has been considerably cooler.
We're about 30 degrees cooler
this afternoon compared to where we were yesterday.
Now, so far this month, we've had almost two inches of rain.
This is how we started October.
New drought monitor came out today.
A little bit more improvement across the area,
thanks to the rains from the tropical remnants
that went through earlier last week.
So seeing some improvements, still a little bit
of moderate drought left across northern portions of the region.
But we do expect, as we continue
to go through fall and the upcoming winter,
that the pattern will generally remain a wetter-than-normal one,
and that should continue to improve the drought situation
across the entire mid-Atlantic region.
Outside tonight, still some pockets of drizzle,
some light showers out there.
It's not really a pleasant night.
D.C. reporting drizzle at 62 degrees.
So was Dulles at 60.
BWI Thurgood Marshall, just cloud cover there at 61 degrees.
Satellite and radar not showing you too much
in the way of clear conditions tonight.
We are tracking that light shower and drizzle activity
coming through northern Virginia through parts
of southern Maryland and through portions of the
northern neck a big picture showing you
though down to the south here calmer conditions clearer
skies than what was there today higher temperatures at
Atlanta hit 88 Nashville 92 Wilmington 90 degrees
we're not expecting to be that hot
but it's this warm air mass that will be over DC tomorrow so
expecting a warmer afternoon could still be clouds
and maybe a little shower if you're up early
enough but as the morning goes
on we should rapidly clear you see after school bright ones
bright sunshine 83 degrees uh for a daytime high 70 percent chance of rain
though that comes tomorrow
night and might not just be rain might
be some thunderstorms we'll take you hour by hour with
future cast coming up in just
a few minutes Jim Mike we'll see you in a bit thank you turning
now to a Fox 5 news alert tonight three kids
and a teacher are dead after a gunman opens fire
inside of an elementary school in Oregon police say
the 16 year old gunman forced his way inside
of Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend
this afternoon before being shot and killed by
somebody who followed him into the building.
A seven-year-old student and another teacher
remain in a hospital in critical condition.
The deceased at the scene include three children
ages 5, 8, and 11, and one teacher.
This is something we never want to happen anywhere,
but especially and particularly
in our beautiful community here in Bend.
This is a horrible day.
No parent should have to have this kind of day, and no community
should have to live through this kind of day.
Bend is about 100 miles away from Portland, Oregon.
Police say the attacker used a pump-action shotgun
that was purchased by his mother.
Neither the gunman nor the four victims
have been publicly identified.
A federal investigation now underway.
This is after somebody mailed suspicious letters
containing unknown substances
to elected officials' offices around the country,
including on Capitol Hill.
Right now, investigators are trying to track down
who is responsible.
The letters come 25 years after the 2001 anthrax attacks.
It's really concerning. I mean, look, we've seen assassinations.
We've seen attempted assassinations,
both Democrats and Republicans left and right.
I think it's a reflection of the polarization,
hyper-partisanship that we're seeing.
In a statement, the FBI tells Fox 5 that they are working to identify
the individual or individuals responsible for the letters.
The scare is also happening less than 20 days before midterm elections.
Tonight, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts giving final approval
to a brand new White House Visitor Screening Center.
Yeah, this is the latest major project that will lead
to major construction on the White House grounds.
Fox 5's Josh Rosenthal joins us live from Northwest
with new details and also some reaction.
Josh.
Well, guys, in the not-too-distant future, this view from 15th
and Pennsylvania is going to look a little different.
Here's the deal.
Today, final approval was given for an underground facility
to screen visitors to the White House.
We're talking people going for tours, people going for events.
The facility would be built off of 15th underneath Sherman Park,
so just southeast of the White House.
Officials say it'll both strengthen security
and enhance the overall visitor experience.
They also point out that since 2005, temporary tents
and trailers have been used to screen White House guests.
Now this, of course, is merely the latest big project,
either at the White House or nearby.
There's the new ballroom, the new helipad, the proposed arch
a couple of miles away, all the work on the reflecting pool.
When we talked to people today about all this, we heard from some folks
who said they generally felt okay about the new screening facility,
but in many cases felt differently about pretty much everything else.
The visitor screening area doesn't seem like
that bad of an idea if it's for additional security.
I don't really have a problem with that, but the rest of the stuff,
it's definitely just like a lot of big changes.
I think all of the construction on the White House is kind of stupid.
I don't want to put words in your mouth.
It sounds like no matter what the next project was, given the projects
that have come before, you are not going to be supportive of that.
Absolutely not.
I mean, I just walked by the reflecting pool.
I saw the gold statues.
I saw the East Wing.
I don't trust this man with any more construction.
Officials hope to open the new visitor screening facility in 2028.
New documents obtained by the Washington Post
are shedding new light on who's funding
the president's $330 million White House ballroom project.
The Post investigation reveals some of the biggest donors include
major tech companies and wealthy Republican contributors.
One could view these many different ways.
I mean, you could view NVIDIA providing $25 million toward
the ballroom as something just patriotic as part of their interest
in making sure the White House and the Capitol look good,
which is part of the statement that they made to us.
Or you could be nervous or concerned that possibly they will get
or have received some sort of preferential treatment
because of their donation.
NVIDIA donated some $25 million
to the Ballroom Project three months after it struck a deal
with the Trump administration to sell advanced microchips
to China in spite of national security concerns.
A murder-suicide investigation underway after the body
of a missing mother was found inside of a car in Hyattsville.
Maury Carias Garcia was found dead
in her car along University Boulevard yesterday,
now two days after she was reported missing.
Now, new surveillance video capturing the moment somebody found her car
behind several Prince George's County businesses.
It's scary, very scary.
Yeah, it's shocking.
I don't, because I'll be on the road as well, like going home,
because I'm not far from here, so it's quite shocking.
Officials say a person of interest known to Garcia
was found dead from an apparent suicide Tuesday.
Two Arlington men now in jail,
accused of attacking a business and an employee.
Police say that 19-year-old Edison Mendez Hernandez
and 20-year-old Juven Cistista threw rocks at a business
on North Quincy Street in Ballston last night.
And then they allegedly attacked an employee who confronted them.
The victim suffered some minor injuries and will be okay.
Day seven of the Naresh Bhatt murder trial.
He's the Manassas Park man accused
of killing his wife, Mamta, back in 2024.
For today, a piece of carpet from Bott's bedroom
with blood on it introduces evidence.
A Prince William County police investigator told the jury
that testing showed blood was found underneath the carpet.
The defense challenged that.
You have this positive reaction, but you can't know
from the reaction how that substance ended up where it ended up, right?
No.
You don't know when it got there?
I do not.
You don't know why it's there?
I do not.
The thing about any scientific method is that even
though it has some limitations,
it doesn't diminish its scientific value.
Can Blue Star detect blood that someone has attempted to clean?
Yes, Blue Star is, that's one of the main uses for it at crime scenes,
is to locate blood that's not visible to the naked eye.
That witness testified that Blue Star does not confirm blood,
but it is a law enforcement tool.
That trial resumes on Monday.
The University of Maryland's club tennis
team issuing a public apology now
over a tournament program with racist imagery on it.
The graphic was included in material sent to visiting schools,
including Howard University.
The team acknowledged the harm committed to anti-racism education
and also announced a donation to the National Museum
of African American History and Culture.
The team remained suspended indefinitely
while the school and police investigate.
And Montgomery County school leaders now refusing
to answer Fox 5's questions
surrounding the sudden suspension of Northwest High School's principal.
All we know at this point is officially
is that Scott Smith is on administrative leave.
He's been the principal at Northwest High School since 2021.
Our cameras, they're rolling today.
This is boxes were removed from the school amid what we
are told is an internal investigation of some kind.
MCPS Superintendent Dr. Travis Taylor
also unavailable to answer our questions.
We send her here. She's here for most of the day.
So we got to know that there's a safe environment.
And if there's something going on,
we need to know about it as parents, you know.
So we're more concerned about her than,
you know, and the safety of the other students.
And we just want to know what's going on and get some information
from the from the county or from the school about what's happening.
The only thing MCPS officials are saying about
this is in a letter that was sent to Northwest High School,
the community yesterday, an administrator writing in part, quote,
we are committed to sharing more information regarding
the length of Mr. Smith's absence when available, end quote.
The Democratic nominee for D.C. Mayor, Janice Lewis-George, is once
again publicly speaking out against autonomous vehicles like Waymo.
Today, George posted on social media claiming the rushing
of the legalization of autonomous vehicles could put
countless rideshare drivers and other workers at risk.
Many unions have said that,
leading a rally just about a week ago at the Wilson Building.
Waymo's D.C. robo-taxi rollout is currently on hold.
Commercial service cannot begin without council approval
and until DDOT issues the necessary permits.
If you've ever tried to buy concert tickets,
tickets prices can skyrocket pretty quickly.
D.C. passed a new law to crack down on ticket scalping.
Lawmakers now calling for concerts to be more affordable.
But some of the biggest resellers are suing to stop it,
claiming that new law could make things worse.
I'm not surprised they're fighting back, but they're wrong.
They just want to continue getting money
and taking more money out of your pockets.
Ticketmaster backed this law. Ticketmaster pushed this law.
And Ticketmaster got itself exempted from this law.
That's not a law that's going to serve D.C. well.
Those ticket companies are asking a federal judge
to pause the law before it takes effect January 1st.
