New here tonight, we learned a 15-year-old was killed
while riding an electric bike in Fort
Bend County over the weekend.
The crash happened on Saturday night in Brookshire. Fox 26's Jillian
Hartman joining us live after speaking with authorities.
Jillian. Yeah, Texas DPS tells me
that a teenage boy from Katy was riding an e-bike
on the wrong side of the road when he collided
with a car driven by a pizza delivery driver.
It's a heartbreaking situation. Happened on Saturday,
October 10th,
around 7.45 p.m. along Woods Road near Tamron Parkway in Brookshire.
Investigators say the teen was riding southbound against traffic
on an e-bike with no lights
when he collided with a Honda Civic traveling northbound.
Now, the driver, an 18-year-old from Fulshear,
was delivering pizza at the time.
DPS says the driver stopped, rendered aid, and called 911.
The 15-year-old, was taken to Memorial Hermann in Katy,
where he died, and no charges have been filed.
Now, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office says this year alone,
deputies have responded to more than 30 incidents involving
electric bikes and scooters involving children ages 11 to 15.
The sheriff said they have seen an increase of these cases across
the county, and today he shared this safety message on social media.
When it comes to e-bikes and scooters, safety starts with the basics.
Wearing a helmet, slowing down, and coming
to a complete stop before crossing a roadway or an intersection.
Staying alert and not using phones or headphones while riding.
And drivers, you have a responsibility too.
Slow down, stay alert, and watch out for our young riders.
Parents, have the conversation.
Riders, make smart choices. Drivers, pay attention.
It only takes one moment for a preventable mistake to become a tragedy.
Now, this is the second deadly crash involving
a young rider in Fort Bend County in just over
a month. We told you in September,
authorities said an 11-year-old was killed while riding an
e-scooter in a crash near Katy.
So today I also spoke with a parent who says he's not allowing
his 10-year-old son to ride an e-bike or scooter alone right now.
I'll have that part of the story
tonight at 10. Reporting live, I'm Jillian Hartman, Fox 26 News.
