All eyes were on Lamar Cook in Hamden Superior Court
in Springfield on Thursday as he was placed back in cuffs.
The former aide to Governor Maura Healey had his bail revoked in his drug
trafficking and firearm case by failing to abide by all federal laws.
This just a day after a shocking arrest on charges
of fraudulently receiving SNAP benefits.
That is not an insignificant event from the court's perspective.
I'm finding the Commonwealth has met its burden.
and I am allowing the motion, and I am revoking your client's bail.
Cook was fired from his aide position back in October of 2023
after getting arrested at the state office building in Springfield
for allegedly receiving eight kilograms of cocaine.
Cook spent months in jail before being
granted pretrial release back in April.
Since getting out, a whirlwind of controversy
topped off by this recent SNAP fraud allegation.
Charging documents state that on his SNAP application,
Cook falsely claimed zero income,
said he only had $100 in his bank account,
and that he lived in a two-person household with a child.
That directly contradicts other documents
describing how Cook had close to $10,000
and another $12,000 in at least two separate accounts.
After being arraigned in Boston on the SNAP fraud charges
and being released on his own recognizance,
the Commonwealth requested that Cook's bail be revoked in the firearm
and drug trafficking case.
Less than being a month out of release,
he is committing these new offenses.
I would suggest that's not a very good track record for Mr. Cook
to demonstrate that he can abide by conditions of release.
This is some type of stretch.
This is some mental gymnastics that the Commonwealth
is doing in order to try to have this gentleman held.
The judge siding with the Commonwealth,
revoking Cook's bail for 90 days.
Judge Hodge gave it to me straight.
The gentleman violated, and he's right.
However, there was a decision by federal court in Boston that allowed
the gentleman to be released with no conditions whatsoever.
So I really can't say anything more.
Cook is expected back in court
on October 26th for a scheduling conference.
