The creator reflects on a transformative 2018, celebrating the milestone of one million subscribers and overcoming a lymphoma diagnosis. Through outdoor demonstrations and personal storytelling, he discusses the importance of authenticity and perseverance in content creation while sharing updates on his family life and future survival ambitions.
Oh oh oh
Oh, ice
everywhere
It's just trying.
to shave it
down a bit
Try to sit
until it
getting
too
cold over but
Are you getting
Your sticks, you
Got your stick
Big guy
Yeah, watch.
Out man, what
Are you doing that stuff there?
You gotta get your own, get your own.
Hey, leave it. What the heck, man?
That was the biggest piece, oh my gosh, it's a
Recurring theme, just leave it, okay? You got it.
My own sticks right now, well, it's Christmas Eve, guys, thanks.
for clicking on the video if you have
I appreciate you taking time out of your holidays.
to watch this, my thoughts are that maybe
Some people want some video playing in the background.
while they have their families over
Maybe you're bored, maybe you don't have anything going.
right now until later until tomorrow
We're going to get this video done and uploaded today.
So, as I said, it's Christmas Eve morning, right?
Now I got out here just as light
It was coming up, obviously, Mr. Scoots with me doing good mowing.
down on some sticks like a good boy um I wanted
To give a recap of 2018, a lot of things
A lot of crazy things have happened to me.
and I never thought would happen happened, and uh, a lot of
Life-changing things also happened; I had a second baby, and I went
and spent 10 days alone there
The longest trip I ever took by myself with 10 items I brought
to the Northwest Territories I moved and I
Moved my family into our dream house we sold.
the house we've been living in for seven years, the
The house that my grandmother bought brand new
And has been in my family
I bought it and upgraded it.
Sold it and moved up here
Diagnosed with lymphoma
He is doing well.
I hit a million subscribers
It was featured on the trending list yesterday.
Finally
The first time in 11 years
I'm getting recognition from bigger YouTubers.
From podcasters
I'm starting to break through in the mainstream
which has been something I've wanted
To do for a while, my daughter is doing well.
Both of my daughters are doing well, my wife.
I'm doing well, and my entire family is doing well too.
going well, everything is good. 2018 has
been a good year, so I have a
breakfast sausage
and some eggs, a bagel, let me get this fire going, I've got it, it's been
Really, really, really wet and snowy
and melting, and as you saw, all the ice on
Here is a proof of that, so I've got some.
marginal wood here getting a couple new
pieces of gear I wanted to use, first of all, you've seen
this backpack before I gave it away, this is
Malcolm Hidden Woodsman Day Ruck 20
Lie down, I believe Scout, watch out, buddy, go over.
There you go, over there, good boy. I gave this thing away; I had it.
This was a couple of years ago; I gave it away.
I really regret doing that, and um, now I've got a new one.
So thanks, Malcolm, for sending me that.
That's really awesome of you, I appreciate it.
so it's a new piece of gear but it isn't, and also because
Because I've had it before,
And also, I have a piece of gear that I want to show you.
I was sent these a long time ago,
And I've been using them nonstop, and I really like them.
I've been using them at home, I've been using them in the woods,
And they are a great piece of equipment.
It is the wax wood stick from Production Hanger 51.
or Firestarter Specialists.
I think it applies to both.
So this wood is impregnated
with resin,
and it lights extremely easily
You can do a few different things with it.
You could start your entire fire with it if you wanted to
This is a wax wood stick.
You could start your entire fire with it if you wanted to
You wouldn't even have to use kindling.
You could literally beat this down
You can shave it, you can split it up
Use it as firewood, everything
So let's get the fire going with this because
of the marginal tinder today
And because I'm not really out here trying to
You know, make a bow drill
And fool around too much
This is not, hey, hey, drop it
Drop it, Scout
I'm definitely planning on doing an overnight trip out.
of that 20-liter Hidden Woodsman Daypack.
It will be a challenge. I've done it once.
or twice before, but in warmer weather.
Here's my waxwood stick.
I just split this without it being recorded, sorry about that.
Anyway, I'll show you again.
So all you did, all I did, was split it off like that.
And then I was saying, if you wanted to preserve it,
You could just put away this big piece,
or say that this was all still intact,
Because I did that for demonstration purposes.
Say that was all still together, put that over there and
You have this small slab that you can use to work with.
You can do everything from making kindling with this,
to continue like that
You can do that all the way through.
Then you can make tiny wood shavings on each end of each one.
Or you can leave them as they are,
just make a tone of scams from this,
Oh, start using it.
So we'll do a mix of both.
We'll split this down once or twice more.
This is nice.
That makes life easy.
Now you can use a match, you can use a lighter,
You can use a fire steel.
I'll use a fire steel on this stuff just
To get it going and show you how easy it is.
So, I'll probably pick a little spot here,
Clear this away a little more,
where I can pile a bunch of shavings,
Because that's my preferred way to do it.
I'm not particularly fond of the feather stick either.
Where it's appropriate, it works extremely well.
I just prefer all of my shavings concentrated in one spot.
shoot, with snow on them.
And that's the good thing about this as well,
You can get it wet; it doesn't really matter.
You can even do it, if you're really concerned
some scrapings, which might not be a bad idea.
And those are like the finest,
fuzziest pieces you'll ever get
Man, I'm so hungry, my stomach's growling.
I gave Scott a good breakfast before we came out so he could take his pills.
But he also has some food out here with me.
We'll all be taken care of.
Alright, that's probably good.
A little bit of marginal shavings in there,
But this stuff is so good it doesn't even matter.
So, we'll have our small firewood pieces next to it.
This is an old
fire steel
fire steel
is ribbed
so that's already
Pretty solid, I'm
not concerned
at all
let's put
a couple of pieces here
for a proper brace all
This right on top, I'm sure
That will be just fine, well.
Fire is going well, as you can see—I'll put a link.
in the description where you can get yourself one of
those um fat wood stack sticks they got wax wood
sticks fat wood sticks fat rope have you guys seen
They've been around for a long time, good company, uh
and Canadian as well, which is pretty cool, all right
So I already got some bigger pieces.
of wood, I'm just gonna hang out for a bit, gather some wood, and
Relax, I'm just gonna cook my food, not too much, man.
Not too much, this should be a short video, I just
I wanted to thank you all, thank everyone
Wishing you a wonderful 2018, happy holidays, and a merry Christmas.
whatever it is that you celebrate
And yeah, good things are coming for 2019, you know what I mean, like
Big Things podcasts coming soon full website
Coming soon—it's already done, I'm just waiting.
to drop merchandise like crazy collaborations
with bigger YouTubers, more family stuff, more scout
things I want to do more, um, I want
To listen, I can't, I can't be fake. I see the rune guy, I see.
Rune, whatever your name is, I see you, I see you, Rune, making waves, homie
And yeah, it lights a fire.
Under my butt again, I need that, I need that, I needed
that with MCQs back in the day I needed
That with bushcraft bear last year, where'd he go?
By the way, um, yeah, I need somebody to bring out, uh
I need something to show me off, to bring me out.
The better part of me, I think, and he did—he showed me up.
That rune guy totally blew me away, look.
What have I done lately, what is that compared to?
That's some cool stuff.
so it's not just what he's doing, it's also how he's filming it
How it looks, it looks awesome, you know, I got
a new perspective after I saw his work blow up
You know what I mean, good competition is good.
and uh, I'm not afraid to talk about them, I'm
not afraid to talk about smaller YouTuber YouTube channels
that are coming up, and you know what I mean
It's not, it's not uh I've never been like
that I've always talked about it, even after I came
Back from alone I was felt
So defeated, you know? I mean, I just left for that, whatever it was, however it happened.
I took that break for six months or whatever
because I couldn't post videos and at that time
People were passing me left and right, freaking Black Owl
Outdoors outpaced me like nuts, you know what I mean?
I mean, they came out of nowhere.
So anyway, I need that, I need that little one.
a bit of a friendly competition thing, I think going
Oh, so you know it's crazy as
I was thinking, don't take this as being cocky or tooting my own horn or
Anything like that, but it's like I remember back
in the day being a tiny
YouTuber before I even had any subscribers
or many videos out watching people like
Hobby XP, do you remember Hobby XP Freddy?
Do you guys remember him who remembers?
The guy with the bow drill out in Sweden, somewhere like that,
Building some crazy shelters, doing tons of bow drills.
Bow drill, friction fire was my thing back in the day,
And that guy was a major inspiration.
Even people like Bushcraft Bartons, who's still around.
Mike, he's still around kicking.
Survival Lily, when she was known as the Alone Wolverine, 1984.
God's One Marine, the Red Hawk 123.
What else, dude?
Sepp Waldenwerk
Back in the day, man
I'm telling you, back in the day
A lot of those channels have already been completed.
And some of them are still there, but they are not thriving.
Mitch, Native Survival
You know what I mean?
I've been told that it's
So why am I here? Why did I just hit a million?
Why am I doing well for myself and for my channel?
After 11 years of content creation
Why? Why now?
And why not the other channels, the other outdoor channels?
that have been around just as long as I have or longer.
Some people attribute it to my appearance on Alone.
I don't.
That hurt me.
And once again, I'm not trying to shoot down anyone,
But look at Mitch.
Mitch made me look like a fool on that.
Compared to what he did,
I look like a kid, don't I?
Where is his channel?
Where is it?
It's crazy, man.
And once again, please don't think I'm being arrogant
or I'm just trying to understand it
and I'm trying to say it out loud.
I was thinking about this exact thing.
It's like, so what do I credit it to? Um, perseverance.
not caring what people think after Alone
that wrecked me, guys, like
That wrecked me—I'm talking, I got trolled so hard and rightfully.
So you know what I mean, but like, I felt like giving up one time.
but you know I felt like giving
Up and I almost did, and I still worked, and I didn't
and I got over it, and I got over my little
I think I was depressed about it, like I'm dead serious, man.
I got over it.
I basically worked two jobs for a long time.
This being one of them, and then working
my other job at the University of Windsor.
It's so close to the camera and the fire, man.
I constantly make a fool of myself on video.
You know what I mean? I think that's what it is.
I never take myself too seriously.
I don't really try to pull the wool over anyone's eyes,
And I'm not sensationalized.
I think that's the biggest issue—it's the sensationalism.
like the mainstream YouTubers, the Paul brothers
People like that, when they're running around.
Hey guys!
Sorry, Scott, did I scare you?
I've seen color for the first time, you know what I mean.
Stuff like that, it's just, it's just so fake,
and I think people are moving away from that stuff, or at least opening up
their eyes and the understanding that there is more reality in the world.
But then again, who knows, and I'm kind of drifting off track anyway,
But I guess what I'm trying to say is, this goat is in my way.
Thank you very much, everyone, once again, and if you have any ideas
What happened, why is my channel blowing up now,
why it has been going so well for me,
and why other channels in the same genre simply weren't able to make it.
If you look at TA Outdoors, he's grown faster.
Probably, he grew much faster than I did.
It has taken me 11 years to get where I am.
He's going to hit a million any moment.
You know what I mean? He's in the same genre.
Shawn James, my self-reliance
Slightly different genre, and he did some epic things.
You know, he built that cabin.
I understand why he grew so quickly. I get that.
You know what I mean?
Even Doug. Doug outside. Back in the day, Doug was...
And no offense, Doug, man. You're my buddy.
Back in the day, Doug was Super Tramp.
or Bush Tramp, or whatever else he had as his...
He had about three or four YouTube channels.
Same time frame as mine, maybe even earlier, and take a look at it,
If he had, and he deleted them multiple times
because of people's comments, because of crazy people,
It's just people who are toxic, and it takes time to get over that.
I think you just gotta not care, you know what I mean,
He doesn't care anymore, and that's fine, and people are better now.
and the internet has calmed down a bit,
but if he hadn't deleted his channels, he'd probably be where I am,
or larger, you know what I mean, it's 11 years invested in something,
for a long time
He's going to hit 100 now
And I think he's only had this channel open for two years.
or something along those lines
It took me 7 years to get 100,000 on my channel.
Seven years!
And then last year I was at 500,000
So it took me 7 years to get 100.
and a couple of years to get 500
and then last year at this time
I was at 500, so I gained another 500.
one year after that
So it's a snowball effect and it moves really quickly.
Anyway, I am very grateful.
and blown away
All right, let's cook this food up—you're getting
A little warm, you're a little warm there, bud.
The sun is starting to come out.
Cook it from frozen behind
Scout, right now I've got
my Instagram
Open, we're doing a live video right now.
but I had to take a break here to flip my burger so
Everyone live right now, welcome
to the Joe Rogan Show oh yeah, bud, oh yeah, look at that
So, my bagel over there where there are still some hot coals,
And I do need to cook my egg.
I got some food for Scout; we'll give him a raw egg and some steak.
Some raw steak from last night.
Never cut toward your legs.
Before we go any further, I have to give a shoutout to The Danish.
Bushcrafter, the YouTuber and Instagrammer, The Danish Bushcrafter.
I promised him I would two months ago,
and I just keep forgetting, but because of that Instagram live feed,
He was there, and I remembered.
So, the Danish Bushcrafter, check him out on Instagram and YouTube.
Here we go, oh bro, I'm
Not gonna pop
the yolk
But I'm going to cook it.
So it's not so runny.
Oh, I do have
A plate? Actually, you have a plate, damn it, son—all of it.
All right, all right, all right—things are working.
Look at that, oh and the yolk is starting
to squirt out too picture perfect, nope, that's hot
But I'll get your food
In a minute, just wait, oh
Buddy, look at that look!
at that yolk spilling
out everywhere
Oh man, waiting
for this all
Good morning, oh man
It's so good.
Okay, scope good
Remember
I told you he already had a big gold breakfast.
he had chicken steak and beef liver along with
coconut oil turmeric let's go, just one minute, buddy
Good boy, stay there for a second, I'm also
Gonna crack
This egg is in there.
for him there
You're all right.
homie, how about
Oh man, it's cold.
Without that fire, this breakfast sausage, I don't even know it's
a breakfast sausage, this pork sausage
This is incredibly delicious.
Extremely substantial.
I realized
that not
everyone
tried to make
this their
YouTube
career
There are people like Kyle, Burley Outdoors,
who I used to hang out with all the time.
That was always just fun for him.
I don't think he ever made money from a single video.
You know what I mean?
All just fun.
But I saw its potential years ago,
And I didn't want to work two jobs anymore.
I wanted this to be my job.
And now I have what I wanted.
Everything I could ever imagine has come true.
Moreover, so much more than that.
Perhaps larger.
No one to thank but you guys.
Thank God.
Scout's
a big part
of this, man
I wouldn't be where I am without him
Next year, speaking of Kyle
We haven't done one.
in two years
I went there last year, so not this year
But next year we'll go on a trip
We're going to head to some crazy northern river.
New trip for about a week
I'm going down to the Demolition Ranch as well.
In Texas to meet up with Matt
That'll be fun.
We've got a lot of stuff planned around here.
There will be lots of fun things to watch.
Lots of fun things to do this year
I'll be at the New England Bushcraft Show.
With Malcolm, the Hidden Woodsman
Kissing Babies
My big goals for this year are to get on a podcast,
a big podcast, like something along the lines of Joe Rogan.
I was mentioned on the Bert Kreischer podcast.
which was kind of cool, Open Tabs, as well as Sean, my self-reliance.
They started talking about him and then were cut off.
And they started talking about me, so shout out to Sean as well.
But thanks, guys, for the huge, huge, huge shout-out.
I received many comments about it.
They watched my entire video, or not my entire video,
They watched a video from my podcast, parts of my video.
Watch, my wife and I were beside ourselves
Dying, just laughing
Some of the things they said
And the segment that comes right after
Watch it if you want, go listen to it if you want
It's also on YouTube.
But yeah, get on a bigger podcast
Get on a major podcast, start my own
I'll probably try to do something epic.
Ten days alone last spring
I'll probably try to do it next fall.
And maybe bring a 22 or whatever.
And see how that turns out
I'm just beside you.
myself man
These past few days
Thank you all
for being on it with me
Thank you all for
I'm probably gonna end
this here
Finish up my spruce tea
balsam fir tea
I came here with Scott.
It's Christmas Eve, after all.
I'm going to spend it with the family.
It was nice to get out this morning.
Nice to just say Merry Christmas to everyone
Merry Christmas
Happy Holidays
Happy New Year
Be safe
Drive safely
Be nice to people
The years of being jerks are over.
New era
Positivity and prosperity
Alright boys and girls
I'm gonna end it before you get too sick of me
Thank you very much for watching
As always
I'll see you on the next one
This
backpack
and we will certainly provide much more information
I'll be using this a lot later on. This is
Gonna be my main backpack, secondary backpacks
on a bigger overnight or whatever
