Larry Sultan (1946–2009) was an American photographer whose work combined conceptual strategies with a sustained investigation of the social and cultural structures of suburban California. His practice examined how photography operates between public and private narratives, often using the San Fernando Valley as both a setting and subject.

His early collaboration with Mike Mandel, Evidence (1977), re-contextualised industrial, governmental, and scientific photographs from archives, presenting them as ambiguous artefacts. The project became a landmark in conceptual photography, showing how meaning is shaped by context rather than inherent in the image.

Sultan’s most significant body of work, Pictures from Home (1992), documented his parents over the course of a decade, combining photographs, film stills, and text to interrogate the performance of family life and the visual language of domestic aspiration. He later extended this interest in constructed environments in The Valley (2004), where he photographed pornographic film productions staged in suburban homes, further testing the boundaries between private space, public image, and staged performance.
