First here at 5, Manatee County Mosquito Control
is mourning the loss of one of their own.
As we learn more about the helicopter
pilot killed in a crash last night.
Federal investigators say 63-year-old Isaac Ike Moore
was on his first mission of the night
when his chopper hit a private radio tower
and crashed in a backyard in a rural area of Myakka City.
That is where we find FOX 13's Kimberly Cuison.
Kim, the NTSB provided an update on the investigation this afternoon.
What more can you tell us?
Well, Haley, we know that this investigation is going to take time.
The NTSB expects to be out here through
the weekend documenting the crash site
and then eventually moving the wreckage
of the helicopter to a secure site
where they will start to piece it together
in hopes of learning what exactly happened here.
Now, last night, just before 9,
that's when 911 calls began to come in.
Now, Isaac Ike Moore was spraying
with the Manatee County Mosquito Control District.
Deputies say he hit an unlit private radio tower.
Wreckage from his helicopter was found strewn over about 100 yards.
Unfortunately, Moore did not make it.
He came to Florida after retiring from the Columbus Police Department.
They remembered him as a beloved mentor who trained many young pilots.
He joined with Manatee County Mosquito Control District
shortly after arriving here because he still wanted to fly.
He left a very good and memorable impression with everyone he met.
He actually attended our aerial fly-in,
and the thing that stands out for me is he is very humble.
I didn't know him that well,
but I can tell you that he answered one of the questions,
and just his experience is what really stood out for me.
He has a lot to offer a lot of other pilots, and just his humbleness.
And I thought, gosh,
we need to get him to talk more because sometimes when you're humble,
you don't like to be the center of attention.
Yeah, and there are a lot of people hurting
today from his family and friends to his co-workers
and mosquito districts across the
state. Neighbors here called 911 as the crash happened.
We are told the same people who called
also pulled Moore out of the helicopter
and tried to help him before flames began to spread.
Now, live out here, I want to show you,
this is one of three radio towers that are out here on this property.
This is what the tower would have looked like.
They range in different heights.
This is one of the ones that is still up.
But again, the NTSB will be out here through
the weekend trying to document everything
and collect every piece of the wreckage that they can.
Haley, back to you.
Our thoughts are certainly with Ike Moore's family
and his work family as well.
I know this is a hard day for them.
Kim, thank you.
