Alice Austen - Photographs.

Alice Austen (1866–1952) was an American photographer who created a substantial record of New York City between the 1880s and 1930s. Working primarily with glass plate negatives, she produced over 7,000 images that covered a wide range of subjects, including urban infrastructure, immigration, public health, and leisure. Her work demonstrates systematic attention to the material changes of the city and its inhabitants during a period of rapid growth.
She also produced a large number of self-portraits and photographs of her household and social circle, notable for their technical precision and use of staged composition. Unlike many amateur photographers of her era, Austen consistently organised, preserved, and catalogued her negatives, treating them as a sustained body of work.
Although her photographs were little known during her lifetime, her archive was rediscovered in the mid-20th century and is now housed at the Alice Austen House Museum on Staten Island. Her work has since been integrated into major public collections and is regarded as a significant contribution to the history of American documentary photography.
