The family of 21-year-old Cody Velasco calling it
an outrage that 18-year-old Anthony Bozzelli
at his sentencing here at Derby Superior Court today did
not get a single day behind bars
in connection with the motorcycle crash that claimed Cody's life.
To not even get his license suspended,
to have unsupervised probation, that's ridiculous.
The family speaking out today.
Where is the accountability?
Here at Walnut Tree Hill Road and Thompson Street in Shelton,
where the crash that claimed Cody's life took place in July of 24.
He had a sweetheart. That's why we call him Sweet Cody.
Court records show the car Bozzelli
was driving northbound struck the motorcycle Cody was on,
with Cody's girlfriend as a passenger, causing the fatal crash.
Bozzelli, who was a juvenile at the time of the accident
and was convicted of negligent homicide,
was sentenced to three years of unsupervised probation.
Cody's family says they left
the courthouse feeling the criminal justice system
had failed them. They did everything possible
for my Cody not to get justice. But Bozzelli's
attorney, Paul Ganim, your heart goes out to the family,
says, quote, the sentence was the result
of careful negotiations with all parties following
a catastrophic event. It's not intended. There's no
intent to harm anybody. This is just a terrible, tragic accident.
Cody's grandmother says this
final chapter of the criminal case will not make
the road ahead for her family any smoother.
The judicial system has failed us,
but I have to hold on to God and live with this day by day.
And Bozzelli's attorney says his client will also serve three years
of unsupervised probation for interfering with an officer.
But he says that sentence will run at the same time as the other.
At Derby Superior Court, Frank Recchia, News 12.
