At the senior building on East New York Avenue,
both elevators are down.
So getting home now means climbing up to six flights of stairs.
We have put in our years. It's a risk going up the stairs.
Residents say this isn't the first time
the elevators have quit on them.
Several times. Unexpectedly.
City records show residents have made numerous complaints since 2020,
including five in the past week alone.
Seniors here say they had enough, and for those relying on walkers,
wheelchairs, and canes, taking these stairs isn't an option.
You cannot trip and fall, and anything can happen.
Residents keep calling management.
It goes directly to voicemail. You don't get a call back.
This is getting to be too much for us.
When News 12 asked building management what's being done
to fix the elevators, they declined to comment.
Inside, the only out-of-order sign is on the first floor.
On the floors above, there's no warning at all.
We should not be living like this as seniors.
In the East New York section of Brooklyn, Estefania Salinas, News 12.
