These rumors change everything for the Padres
as this certain team is looking for help and the
Padres have players that fix that problem for them.
Who am I talking about? What's going to
happen with the Padres? Let's talk about it.
Oh, excuse me. Hi, welcome back to another episode of
Padres Digest with your host, Andrew.
Today we have more off-season trade rumor stuff,
something that I saw a couple of days ago,
and I thought we can make a nice little video on it.
uh and as always please subscribe
as always follow us on X Instagram Facebook Padres
digest but today we're talking catching
and we're talking the Yankees so what am i yapping about
well Yankees want backup catcher
for their catcher Austin Wells this is a report from
Joel Sherman so they list multiple catchers
you know Carson Kelly Austin Hedges
Carantini Aaron Sanchez but then you got Freddie Fermin
and Luis Campusano both of course Padres
catchers so Austin Wells last year wasn't horrible
definitely wasn't great uh it was pretty bad
it was pretty bad i guess i was trying to be nice
but no uh so he definitely needs some help right
he is a lefty bat uh and on the prowl
for a proven right-handed hitting batter catcher to pay
pair with Wells and we technically have one uh
but well we had technically have two but only
really one fits that but we could still get rid of him
because he's not horrible horrible he just
wasn't playing great last year right
so Padres have three catchers for two spots who are we
talking about you should probably know by now
but of course we have uh Freddie Fermin Luis
Campusano and of course newly called up Ethan Salas
and there's no reason to keep three catchers
competing for the same future role i mean there
are some benefits to it but i think it was just
a little unnecessary having three catchers uh
and of course Ethan Salas his left-handed bat
is a huge deal now the timeline you all saw
of course we got Freddy Fermin for Ryan Bergert
Stephen Kollek Compusano on a one-year deal uh
returning arbitration Fermin avoids arbitration
and Salas gets called up and everything changes
because that guy is going to be insane and then
Sherman names both Compusano
and Fermin as possible targets so what's the contracts and
payroll looking like for that so Compusano will
be under control through 2028 so two more years
yeah uh Fermin three more years through 2029 uh
and then Salas is still on his rookie deal
i'm pretty sure so he's going to be here
for a long time now right and our payroll is already
at 277.8 million uh by Spotrac predictions for next year
so over the tax line by 30.8 million
uh and that's of course before the whole lockout things happens
but yeah everyone agrees easy
decision Fermin must go he's not a good hitter Salas
and Campy lefty and righty will be next
year's catcher uh but let's look at the stats right
so what do the stats say so Padres catchers
post very different 2026 numbers of course let's look
at Campusano's numbers .265 average not bad
OBP on base percentage top nine percent
of catchers OPS top 20 percent of catchers uh so you know he
had a solid season nothing crazy but a 1.7 WAR not bad right
and then Federman means kind of
the opposite uh .203 average so he did pick it up at the end there
but a .589 OPS below one WAR
but not horrendous just not great uh
but then you got you know your boy Ethan Salas who didn't play
that much obviously but 16 games respectable
and he's only going to get better right so you can
compare all those numbers with each other obviously Salas
is going to be the best out of this list
but Campusano right now is statistically better than both
of them for right now of course now
it's crazy that catching might be a bona fide strength
for the Padres uh and that's a problem
I love having right and of course Ethan Salas he's
a very talented player and then probably
too is his catcher uh character and maturity I can read uh
so yeah we have two we have three
catchers we can get rid of one of them
but who do the Yankees have to get rid of uh who can we
get from the Yankees well you got Warren Dominguez
he's they're all seen as possible Yankees chips
so will Warren we've talked about last year
with the whole Mason Miller trade rumor stuff
but he's a starting pitcher
and you have Jason Dominguez, Ben Hess, another starting pitching
prospect and we do need some starting pitching
so maybe this is interesting right so Warren last
year his stats weren't great weren't horrible 3.92 ERA 158 strikeouts
though which is top 15
percent uh 11 wins six losses 32 games pitched
so a 1.1 WAR respectable right and he's still
relatively young so it's not like he's like 40 years old
and you know washed like he's a guy who
definitely has some stuff left
to give Jason Dominguez has had good times bad times okay times
what kind of player are we gonna get i don't know
but he does have a negative WAR uh but he is
definitely someone the Yankees kind of want
to get rid of and maybe he would fit nicely because
we do need a left fielder uh
so maybe Jason Dominguez could really fill that hole for us
maybe maybe right i wouldn't hate it i wouldn't love it
but Freddie Fermin for Dominguez doesn't
seem horrible and then Ben Hess uh
this is his baseball reference since he's still a minor
leaguer but 4.45 ERA and 16 starts he had some fine stats right
not great not horrible but he's still
young right he's on the 60 day IL in the minors
but he's the number 89 prospect overall and the
Yankees number five but maybe he'll drop thanks
to those stats i don't know but uh Dominguez could
be the centerpiece of a blockbuster deal uh i don't know
if i'd call Freddie Fan mean and Dominguez
a blockbuster deal but you know it's a possibility right
then you have your unlikely chips of course
Ryan McMahon they do want a salary dump uh
and like he could find a place on our team but i just
don't know if i really want to pay 15.4 for Ryan McMahon
and then you got Volpe who's been bad been
good been okay probably not going to get moved same thing
with George Lombard uh but there are
possibilities probably not Lombard
though uh the word throughout is that Brian Cashman's not going
to part with his top prospect George Lombard
which i guess makes sense right and then McMahon is a
net negative at the plate and on defense
so definitely not someone really want to get on
our salary so Padres catching plans heads
into the off season this is how Austin Wells looks
versus our catchers so they could absolutely use someone like Fetamine
and Camposano they need a
right-handed bat either or I would obviously want
to trade Fetamine more but I don't know if he'll
get as good as return as Camposano would
but honestly I like Dominguez and Fetamine straight
up two struggling players to help fix
our needs it doesn't seem like a bad trade maybe it's a
little lopsided for us honestly
but it would fix both of our problems so i don't hate it right uh
and i do they do have other options right i mean
there's Ryan Jeffers who's gonna be a free agent
Carson Kelly uh does have a mutual option with the Cubs
but could be a free agent Keibert Ruiz
uh Hunter Goodman if they want to splash Pedro Pages from the Cardinals
so they do have other
options but you know what's the right return
if you're going to give up Campusano and or Fermín
do you want a major leaguer pitcher like
a major league pitching player like Warren or do you want
a top pitching prospect like Hess
or would you rather just keep Campusano or keep Fermín or
keep both and then have three catchers you guys
let me know what you think but like I said I like
I think I like Dominguez for Fermín straight up
but you guys give me your thoughts in the
comments down below uh
