Investigators were back on the scene
of last weekend's deadly police shooting, searching for more evidence.
It was Saturday morning in West Philadelphia when a gunman opened fire,
killing officer Shane Sieber and leaving his partner,
Hector Rodriguez, seriously wounded.
Action News reporter Chad Pradelli has more on today's investigative
work and new details of funeral arrangements for officer Sieber.
After the city cut back much of the weeds
and brush around properties where Eric Lewis allegedly fired on police,
investigators searched the area for any missing evidence,
focusing on shell casings.
As one detective on scene said, just crossing T's and dotting I's.
Lewis allegedly ambushed officers Shane Sieber and Hector Rodriguez,
killing Sieber and wounding Rodriguez.
I feel sorry for those officers,
but nowadays, what can you do?
like feel for the families the officers
were responding to a report of a man with a gun when
lewis approached a scuffle ensued
and police say lewis pulled a gun and fired on the officers
continuing to shoot as the officers
were on the ground damon barnes says lewis often sat on his
porch with his dogs and had an edge to him always
an attitude like it's hard it's hard to even miss
is always an attitude. You just steer clear.
The tragic killing of Officer Sieber is another
dark chapter for the department, and since,
finger-pointing has been at play about why Lewis
was on the streets. He was acquitted
at the 2019 murder of Christopher Williams during a
road-rage incident on the 900 block of North Falun.
District Attorney Larry Krasner put out
a video statement earlier this week blaming what he called
a deficient police investigation.
The police department tempered its response
and says the focus now is on the officers and their families.
Sieber will be laid to rest next week.
On Monday, there will be a viewing
at the Gibnish Funeral Home in Northeast Philadelphia.
On Tuesday, there will be a second viewing at the Cathedral Basilica
of St. Peter and Paul, followed by a funeral.
