And 70,000 people came together at Jones Beach today
for making strides of Long Island.
The 5K run and walk raises awareness
to support people affected by the disease.
Survivors, though still fighting, caregivers and supporters,
they all gathered at Jones Beach Field 5,
all coming together to support the fight against the disease.
So we spoke with survivors
and their loved ones about what this event means to them.
Us and our family are all here to continue that fight.
This is now our eighth year, and we're going to be here every year
until this horrible disease is eradicated and out of our lives.
This is a support system for all breast cancer survivors
or any type of cancer.
It really encourages people to get checked,
to go to their doctors, and to be ahead of their health.
It's important because it acknowledges that there is a challenge
and a struggle for cancer, especially in Long Island.
And it also gives us a sense of community.
It doesn't matter what color you are,
what age you are, or what gender you are.
We're in this together.
The event is put together by the American Cancer Society
and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
The walk was also presented by the Teachers Federal Credit Union.
