Police here in Saddlebrook are telling us that car
was being stolen from the policeman's neighbor,
a neighbor who just happens to be his very own father.
The chief of police here in Saddlebrook has confirmed for us
that a 911 call came into headquarters at 1120 on Saturday night.
Police say that an off-duty captain from the Saddlebrook police force
was seeing two people with flashlights in his father's driveway,
which was across the street from his own home.
That officer realized that the suspects
were trying to steal his dad's car,
A 2011 gray Infiniti G37, similar to the one pictured here.
Chief of Police John Zottolo tells us that his officer saw
the thieves pulling out of the driveway in reverse.
That's when the officer ran outside to try and stop what was happening,
and he was hit by the car before the Infiniti pulled away.
The chief of police says that officer was checked out
for bruising to his leg at a nearby hospital.
He was released, and he's back on the job today.
As of now, Saddlebrook police say the vehicle has not been found
and no one has been arrested.
Overall in New Jersey, state police recently reported
that car theft is down by 20% over last year.
