Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe video captures a day of surfing and coastal observation in Newport and Aliso Beach. The narrator highlights impressive swell conditions, the emergence of a new professional skimboarder, and the ongoing efforts by Caltrans to tarp a cliff crack to prevent erosion. The day concludes with massive backwash waves at Aliso Beach.
Oh my gosh.
No.
Yeah, we are headed
to Wedge, and the
swell's actually
pretty large today.
A little bit of a surprise.
Woke up and Laguna was like solid six-foot sets coming in,
and Wedge is definitely going
to be pretty pumping.
Just incredible conditions, pretty much for the whole month of October.
Almost 80 degrees out, and glassy as can be,
so yeah, I'll make our rounds back, show you
guys the crack.
back to the crack back to the crack check out the tarping
and then hit our favorite place
we're gonna do a a cool like comparison between
a drone shot that we got um probably a couple
winters ago in the middle of winter
when the beach was super wide and show what it looks like now
comparison
so little
Paul Carey
featherweight
dude that guy
he's like
literally got bird bones
it's going combo that's Paul
on his new pro model
he just got his first ever pro model recording skimboard
and he went pro this
last month pretty cool he's looking pro that combo is legit
Skim boardings newest professional everyone
Thank you
Going
surfing
That qualifies
a trick down
The
launch
sequence
is a
crate.
Yeah,
I did
not
think
you
were
coming
out of
that
That board's sick, this board it worked really good
in that barrel, paddles like a champ too
Yeah, I'm done. I'm calling it quits.
You're done? Going out on that?
Oh yeah, I'm not going to do better than that. No chance.
It was a lot of people out here.
It's kind of turned into a completely different wave,
and I think the word is out.
I think everyone has, over the past few weeks,
gotten incredible waves here.
So yeah, they're pretty much the best surfers in Newport.
We're all here this morning.
Christian Fletcher was here. Grayson Fletcher was here.
Yeah, a lot of really good surfers.
All you need is one.
One wave is all you need to make the whole trip up here worth it.
Yeah, that was one of the better waves
I've gotten here this summer for sure.
Steve Taylor has one of these.
Really? Yep.
Diamond hit. Oh, it's a crystal? Yeah.
Crystal refractor.
Glistening in the sunlight. The band-aid is coming along pretty nicely.
Oh, the band-aid gets bigger with every passing moment.
Look at all this tarp action.
Oh wow, you can see it all stuck to the street.
halfway through in two days we might have two more days
to go two more days of trench foot for the
guy at the bottom yeah today was actually kind of big
and waves are still washing up pretty much to
the cliff edge and the tide doesn't get
that high today it's like neap tides today it's pretty much
as mellow as the tides get this month
the peak high tide is like a 4.1 i think next weekend
around this time it'll be about a six foot high tide
if you incorporate the Kelvin wave it'll
be closer to a seven foot high tide
thankfully there's not too much swell in the forecast for next weekend
but i think even like a four foot wave with a seven foot high tide
is still gonna smoke that that berm or the bluff
and then we got rains next week too
wednesday thursday friday looks like it
could rain so it could get interesting next week i
I think next week is going to determine, like,
do we have months of the crack like that?
Or do we have days?
So we'll see.
But we might not be able to see because the tarp's over the crack.
Waves are still washing up to the bottom of the cliff.
Caltrans workers are still getting wet.
We watched one sandbag that they were dropping down
from PCH loosen a rock on the cliff.
It looked like it hit a dude's hand.
So that's a pretty challenging job to be working right now.
you're getting wet and risking getting hit
by rocks that are falling down the cliff and yeah
that thing is just not stable you we can see some new
um areas that shed off the cliff between
yesterday and today there's uh it's pretty pretty easy
to tell where like new dirt has fallen because
it's all crumbly and starts to like kind of pile up
on itself yeah they're about halfway through
with tarping the crack
and hopefully preventing further erosion from the rain. I think that's
the whole purpose of the plastic tarp.
It's to prevent the rain from getting into that crack
and making everything even more susceptible to slide.
Look at Main Beach. The bermage at Main
is pretty insane. It's a wall.
This was all underwater like a week ago.
Final stop of the day.
Aliso Beach high tide four point something high tide
which means it's more like a five
which means there's gonna be a ton of backwash probably off
the parking lot whoa check out this
stretch limo whoa it's bedazzled yeah we shot some
aerial footage of Aliso Beach a couple of winters
ago when the sand was just piled up in front of the parking lot
and you know it's it's a good
amount of beach to show what it looks like now
in comparison is a pretty pretty stark difference so
yeah we're
gonna
head back
down
to Aliso
for the
last stop
of the day
in the
palm
tree we
get some
lunch at the Lost Pier
you can see chunks
of the sidewalk
down there i think
that sidewalk and then
there's
the old
pier
pilings
from
the
pier
that
used to
be here
oh this
one
could
be
gnarly
too
sky oh my gosh oh
my god
this set's mega
biggest wave
i've seen today
the backwashes
are insane
right now it's as good as it gets that's what we
were waiting we just had to wait an hour and a
half for it but that was a 10 wave set
and some of them were so big that it broke out before it
hit the the break wall in here
so it didn't even make that big of a backwash but the first few
waves of that set hit the seawall sent a backwash out
and then made the wave just explode probably
10-15 feet into the air
the last pier have
a drink you get a nice
sea mist you don't even
get a sea breeze you get
a sea mist you want misters they got them right here we watched a
hundred foot backwash a hundred foot wave
a hundred foot wave at Aliso it was a backwash
they hit a wave and it actually the backwash went higher maybe
as high if not higher than a palm
tree i'd never seen anything like that and it
was just like the perfect timing where the wave was
cresting here the backwash was hitting here
and it just exploded it into space never a dull moment
