Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe speaker documents coastal erosion and storm damage across several California locations, including Crystal Cove, The Wedge, and Aliso Beach. The footage highlights critical cliff fractures threatening PCH, the disappearance of beaches due to massive swells, and the resulting sand deposits in parking lots and roads.
Oh boy, well this will be interesting.
First time doing a live news thing I think. Should be fun,
should be fun. The plot thickens.
We're back down at Crystal Cove.
This is my third day in a row of
checking it out and it looks like there's some like Caltrans people
that are measuring how far
the how far away the crack is from the road
and they're not only measuring how far away it is
from the road but how deep it is so i just watched them stick
a tape measure down the crack which
looks like it's about six feet away from the road
um i guess it's considered more of like a fracture
where you know it might it's yeah it's
a stress fracture there's definitely unstable ground right
there and uh and the level of the cliff is starting to lower
and i think that crack is actually
getting i think it's getting bigger it's kind
of hard to tell from the past two days i haven't
really seen um i haven't i haven't noticed
that the crack is this close to the road until today
and where they're measuring it is very very close to the road
so yeah this thing might have less
time than we thought and the only thing we have going
for us is that the waves are definitely not
as big the next few days
and the tides are gradually getting lower so yeah hopefully
hopefully they come to some sort of conclusion here
but yeah guess this road has not opened up
and I don't think it will for a little bit
or at least the right lane going southbound has not
opened up and it probably won't for a little for a little
while and hopefully we have at least one
lane going southbound for the next few days
but my guess is that it's only a matter of time before
they close both so we'll see looks like there's
a couple news stations on it Caltrans is definitely
uh here in full force a bunch of land surveyor guys measuring stuff
and i'm i'm gonna go ahead
and say that that crack has gotten closer to the road
and probably a little bit deeper too
it looks like there's just more of a shadow
on the crack than there was yesterday i don't know
it's the time of day that i'm shooting it
but crack looks like it might be a couple inches
bigger than it was so yeah these guys are they've got
their work cut out for them for sure i bet you
PCH gets closed i bet you the southbound PCH probably gets closed
in the next few days oh boy
well this will be interesting first time doing
a live news thing i think should be fun should be
from some muddy waters
go over here see
if we can find find that crack
come up top right off the road
holy moly that's where
gonna get out
of here before
we get yelled
at or end up
in the ocean
pretty nuts
what it's looking like lots of news stations here lots
of people covering the crack in the
hill lots of Caltrans workers trying
to figure something out trying to figure out if that crack's
getting bigger man the difference between low
and high tide today look at this this is all
fresh rock that has fallen looks like all
that is probably gonna go tomorrow but yeah the tide
hasn't even gotten to this rock yet you can tell
this thing kind of exploded out pretty nuts down
here guessing that this is old old parts
of the trailer home infrastructure that was down here
this is a weird piece of concrete though super weird piece of concrete
the hell this is that massive
piece of concrete
honestly this piece of concrete's probably protecting that cliff face a
little bit not so sure what
these things are but
probably parts
of the old
trailer park
recap of today
we did two news interviews one
for abc seven another for uh
cbs and those were not live i thought i was gonna be live
and then we got to surf wedge this morning
um waves were actually super pretty not not that
amazing but pretty damn good not gonna complain about
that day at wedge it was beautiful a couple
little skim waves um nothing
to write home about other people had some waves to write home about
but definitely not me gosh first time pulling up
to wedge since all the flooding and crazy big
swells can't believe how far back the lifeguard towers
are and this berm there's not much left
down here it's insane heard that
left is kind of sketchy someone's
doing it though look at all the
new rocks right here i haven't been down the wedge since all
the destruction and flooding but there's
basically no beach left they built up this huge berm
the lifeguard towers are both back there
and look at how much jetty's exposed we used
to skim skim out past that right there we were
skimming into ciders out there never seen
a cider off this inside wall little cider right here
almost almost doing it little micro
ones it'd be a pretty dang day
down here today's board of choice
oh
a
nice
set
too
dang
this
is
a
good
set
i
love
why
they
built
these
sand
berms
up
level
to
the
the pier.
There's no beach
left here either.
Skim actually
looks pretty good.
Skim's kind
of actually
really good. This is the Balboa parking lot
that got super smoked the other day. There was a wave
that washed over a sandbar that was smaller than
this and just took out the whole parking lot. But
yeah I think this is kind of the part
of the Balboa Peninsula that had the craziest waves
washing up. See if I can find that clip somewhere for you guys.
Look at all the sand on these
parking space where all the waves
are washing up depositing sand this far back
pretty crazy it's the main road
on Balboa Peninsula got Street Sweeper up
here look at all that sand there's like
a new beach back here that guy's cleaning
it all up look at all the sand in them
Wow I think all the sand at Wedge is now
on the on the main road at Balboa Peninsula seriously though we think
there's probably a lot of sand that was lost
from the beaches and are now back
all the way back on the roads and stuff.
Gotta figure out a way to get
that sand back on the beach.
Last stop of the day.
Just gonna see how the parking lot's holding up.
It's not really high tide right now,
but you're gonna be able to see some rocks
in the parking lot, I'm sure.
It's actually pretty cool.
Look at this guy.
Blue heron, I believe.
Blue heron just hanging out right at the creek break.
It's a big bird.
So this is actually pretty insane.
This is where you drive into the Aliso parking lot.
And there used to be a part where you could
kind of park here and check out the waves
and it's about a foot under sand maybe maybe two feet
under sand look there's the entryway
this is so deep right here well i think we know where some
of the sand from the beach went it went into the damn parking lot
and into the park the park
has like nice sand it used to have like kind of brown gross sand
but now it's like all beach sand
that's right where the old shower used
to be and these are i believe new rocks that they dumped in
a lot of the new rocks got blown into the parking lot
the parking lot's kind of unrecognizable
they had to move
the lifeguard tower back sidewalks
getting undercut the pier since
look at oh yeah the pay booth this used
to be the pay here pay here the pay booth is gone because
it got blown back into the parking lot
so nuts all right and go give our friends at the lost
pier some love they're actually open right now i'm uh stoked
to see that they're still in business
because there's waves washing up into their doorstep the other day
and they have not had
any business for a while so go check out
the lost pier down here at Aliso Beach you have to park in
the back lot and then walk over
and uh it's a nice little walk go under the pedestrian tunnel
don't cross PCH they've got good food over there
parking lot sea glass dude there's so many boulders
right here gotta be some good sea glass
in here where is it at this is a day of dropping swell
swell is supposed to be small
right now still a full wave just
been pumping all summer long
very few down days we're supposed to get more waves
this weekend crazy still buried in sand
the parking lot's buried in sand the beach
is covered in rock everywhere where you want the
sand it's not it's looking pretty dismal down there
and it's probably going to be pretty dismal
for a while but the lost pier is open
so go pay them a visit good breakfast burrito and a really
good smoothie just gonna have to pay the uh ocean view prices
but we love them especially after a
really good session at Aliso you kind of go
and treat yourself get some good waves get some good
ciders go get a damn smoothie that's eight dollars
who cares all right enjoy talk to you peace
