Molly Macindoe's Out of Order documents the underground free party, teknival and rave scene across the United Kingdom and Europe between 1997 and 2006. First published by Tangent Books in 2011, the project is the culmination of a decade spent photographing a subculture in which Macindoe was an active participant rather than an outside observer. The book contains more than four hundred photographs made at squat parties, warehouse events, outdoor teknivals and free festivals, creating one of the most comprehensive visual records of the movement at a time when it received little sustained documentary attention. Essays by musicologist Caroline Stedman provide historical and cultural context for the photographs.

Macindoe's photographs move beyond familiar media representations of rave culture by concentrating on the communities, friendships and shared experiences that developed around the events. Rather than emphasising spectacle or sensationalism, she records the temporary spaces created by sound systems, travellers and party organisers, documenting everyday moments alongside large gatherings across Britain and mainland Europe. Working almost exclusively with analogue film, Macindoe produced an insider's account that functions as both a personal narrative and an important documentary archive of a youth movement whose ephemeral nature has left relatively few visual records. Out of Order remains one of the defining photographic studies of the European free party scene and a significant contribution to the documentation of contemporary subcultures.
