When Five Roman Emperors claimed Rome in One Year
Rome, 31st December 192AD
The Roman Emperor Commodus has already been Emperor for 12 years since his father's untimely death.
Unlike his father, the Great Stoic Philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus hated formal state matters.
Instead, he focused on gladiatorial combat and often participated personally.
According to Roman Historian, Commodus wanted to start the Parade for New Year of 193AD as a gladiator from the Gladiator Barrack.
He wanted to do this instead of leading the parade as the Emperor from the Palace.
However, when the three people closest to him: his Mistress Marcia, his Praetorian Prefect, Laetus, and his Chamberlain, Eclectus, have all rejected and possibly mocked this idea, he was so upset that he put all three of their name on the top of a list of people to be executed in the new year.
Through some twist of fate, Marcia saw her name at the top of the execution list.
She flipped and decided to kill Commodus to save her own life.
Marcia's initial attempt to poison Commodus did not work as Commodus was too drunk and threw up, emptying almost all poisons from his body.
Marcia persisted and instructed a wrestler to strangle and kill Commodus.
Commodus had no heir, and none of his brothers survived to adulthood.
He has also executed his sister, Lucilla, and his Cousin, Quadratus, as they plotted against him for the Imperial Throne.
When the Romans woke up on the 1st January 193 AD, they had no Emperor and no confirmed heir to the Imperial Throne.
With all this drama as the backdrop, the year of the Five Emperors has just begun.
As we will see in future videos, five Emperors claimed the throne from 1st January 193AD, these include Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Severus Septimus, Pescennius Niger, and Claudius Albinus.
The year of the Five Emperors saw each of these emperors claiming the Roman Imperial Throne after Commodus's death.
