When Civilizations Collapse: Six Lost Worlds of Ancient History | Documentary Marathon
What can bring an entire civilization to an end?
Across history, thriving cities, powerful empires and entire inhabited landscapes have disappeared. Ancient Apocalypse investigates six extraordinary cases, following archaeologists and scientists as they search for evidence of the catastrophes and crises that transformed the ancient world.
Beneath the North Sea lies Doggerland, a vast prehistoric landscape once inhabited by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers before rising seas swallowed the land. Around the Dead Sea, archaeologists investigate whether the violent destruction of an ancient city could lie behind the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
In Greece, the search for the lost city of Helike reveals evidence of a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami — and striking parallels with Plato's story of Atlantis. In Mesopotamia, the Akkadian Empire rose to become the world's first great empire before drought, rebellion and economic collapse helped bring its rule to an end.
Around 1200 BCE, the great powers of the eastern Mediterranean were thrown into crisis as cities burned, populations moved and mysterious groups remembered as the Sea Peoples appeared in the historical record. And in the Maya heartland, warfare, competition between city-states and prolonged drought placed one of the ancient world's great civilizations under devastating pressure.
From drowned landscapes and lost cities to fallen empires, ancient texts and forgotten ruins, this series follows the evidence left behind to ask one haunting question: why do civilizations collapse?
