As Texans start casting their ballot votes,
a new legal battle is unfolding in the race for governor.
Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa
is suing Governor Abbott over his communications with Elon Musk.
Good day, Austin.
Juliana Jackson joins us with more on that dispute.
Morning, Juliana.
Good morning, Dave and Atiana.
This dispute actually goes back to last year when the governor's office
released more than 1,300 pages of conversations involving Elon Musk
and his companies, but most were heavily redacted or blacked out.
At the time, Governor Abbott's office says
their reasons included business confidentiality and legal privilege.
And the Attorney General's office approved withholding much
of the information from the public.
Now Democratic nominee Gina Hinojosa is asking to see the unredacted
records, she says, in her role as a state representative.
She says she wants to better understand the state's business dealings
with Elon's companies, including tax incentives and public resources.
Abbott, however, says the lawsuit is a political move
in the final weeks of the campaign.
There is one fight in this election.
It is the fight of our time.
Is this going to be a Texas that is by and for the people,
or is this the billionaire's
world and we just live here?
It's another act of desperation.
We see act after act after act of desperation.
What Gina's trying to do more than anything else
is to try to get attention for her and
her campaign.
Texas law requires that legislators have access
to certain confidential government information.
Her lawsuit says she requested the documents in September
and was denied access earlier this month.
She's asking a judge to allow her to review them
while agreeing to keep any confidential information private.
So the next step is up to the court,
which will have to decide whether she's entitled to see those records.
Even if she is granted access,
that doesn't automatically mean they'll be released to the public.
Abbott has criticized the lawsuit, but the filing hasn't
shown any wrongdoings between Elon and the governor.
Reporting live in downtown Austin,
Juliana Jackson, back to you in the studio.
