On a story we first told you about last week,
the family of an assault suspect on the Georgia
State University campus says the 32-year-old man
was a former football standout at GSU
who graduated only two years ago.
Good evening and thank you for joining us. I'm Russ Spence.
I'm Christine Spiro. They say Carnell
Hobson suffers from mental illness
and does not belong in the Fulton County Jail.
Fox High's Angelique Proctor talked to his family.
He was just playing football in the air.
Cornell Hobson's uncle walked down memory lane showing us
childhood photos and football photos of the 32-year-old's days
as a defensive end for the Georgia State University Panthers.
His family believes five concussions during his football years led
to aggression, inconsistencies, and finally mental illness.
His uncle says the family was looking for him the day before
the GSU assault at Piedmont Central Dining Hall.
We found out he was arrested and went to jail.
The GSU chief says an employee mistakenly let Hobson in the cafeteria.
Then when an employee asked him to leave,
the 32-year-old threw his food and then two chairs.
That is when several students jumped in to help the GSU employee.
Hobson's family believes he got the worst of it.
They beat him up real bad, so I wanted to make sure that he was okay.
My first reaction is getting him help
because I know he's breaking down.
He was about to sit there and eat.
he's a student at Georgia State,
so he can go to Georgia State and eat on campus without a problem.
Georgia State confirms Hobson graduated in 2024.
They also confirm he was a football player there
for four years. His family says after his football career,
his life took a turn for the worst.
They want the state and GSU to help him now.
I would like for them to transfer him to
the mental hospital, Georgia Regional,
or one of the mental hospitals there.
since 2016 his whole life has stopped now it's
in and out of jail in and out
of hospital my main goal is also would like
for the state of Georgia to have
facilities for people with mental illness
because there's a lot of people
on the streets with this problem
