To see that is very heartbreaking.
I just don't see somebody just doing that to a baby.
A Fort Worth mother now facing
a capital murder charge after police say her baby was found dead
in a motel dumpster. I'm Clarice Tinsley.
According to that arrest warrant, Avia Cantrell
admitted to police that she drowned her newborn daughter in a bathtub.
Her boyfriend is also in
custody, charged with helping her dispose of the baby's body.
Here's Fox 4's Alex Boyer with the
disturbing details of this case.
It was in this motel trash bin where Fort Worth police say a dead
infant was disposed of just days after being born.
An unhoused woman found the baby in a bag on
Sunday. She was out dumpster diving and found the bag and thought,
I found something big in here
and ended up that she got surprised with that.
And she was the one that initially asked for help.
That set off a search for the infant's mother.
The next day, police received a welfare check call
for 23-year-old Avia Cantrell.
Her sister-in-law told police that she was pregnant and due soon.
Officers found Cantrell
and her three children staying in room 205 at the Drummer's Inn,
the same motel where the infant's body was found.
Cantrell initially denied being pregnant,
but later admitted to giving birth
to a full-term baby girl in the bathtub days earlier.
She said the baby was moving. The details are disturbing.
According to an arrest affidavit,
Cantrell told investigators she left the baby face down
in the water for approximately 30 minutes before moving the child.
Cantrell added that she placed the child in a blue bag
which matched what the deceased child was found in and kept
deceased baby's body in the bag for approximately four days.
Being that it was a baby, you know, that's always very sad to hear
when there's a child involved in any situations like this.
Security cameras at the motel
also reportedly captured Cantrell tossing an infant's seat
into the dumpster on the same day the infant's body was found.
The report states Cantrell asked her boyfriend,
26-year-old Cameron Baker, to dispose of the body.
When interviewed by detectives,
Baker reportedly said they didn't call medical because they didn't want
to catch a case, meaning an investigation, and added
that she asked him to throw the baby away because she couldn't do it.
Cantrell is charged with capital murder of a person under 10 years old,
and Baker is charged with abuse of a corpse.
Officer Wood wants to remind everyone there
are resources to help new mothers.
They can surrender that baby to any hospitals and fire stations where
the baby doesn't have to be, you know, dumped in situations like this.
They do have a place for them
to surrender them without any questions, you know, QTs as well.
NCPS says that they are investigating alongside law enforcement.
Now, the agency does have a previous history with Cantrell,
but those details are confidential.
I can tell you that her other children are staying with a relative.
Thank
you.
