A man charged in a multi-state sports gambling ring based
in northwest Indiana is expected to
be in court today. Brittany Chulis joins us
to break down the court case. What's at stake here,
Brittany? Good morning. Yeah, good morning, guys.
Jimmy the Greek, Jared Amos, will be in court
today. Federal marshals actually will be bringing him in court,
so he'll physically be here.
Finding out if he'll be released ahead of trial.
Now, about a month ago, a federal judge actually
did grant him pre-trial release,
but the federal government stepped in and put a stop to it. And
Today, Jared Amos and his attorney
are making another run at bond ahead of trial.
Now, here's a quick recap of Operation Porterhouse Parlay.
Back in April, 22 defendants
were federally charged on a 28-count indictment.
Accused of running an illegal gambling ring
for about five years in northwest Indiana,
federal prosecutors pointing to Jimmy
the Greek Jared Amos as the kingpin
he owned two of the restaurants the alleged ring ran out of.
In early September, Jared Amos and his defense attorney, Bo Brindley,
made their first attempt at bond ahead of trial,
But that hearing was pushed after Brindley says
federal prosecutors dropped a 30-page response
on his lap a day ahead of that September 10th hearing.
In that about 30-page document,
federal prosecutors argue to keep Jared Amos in custody,
saying he'd be a danger to his alleged extortion victims,
their families, and the wider community.
Now, the documents detail the FBI's records of Jared Amos'
alleged illegal gambling ring ran out of the Paragon restaurant,
which he owns, those records spanning back to 2001.
Documents also cite specific incidences where Jared
Amos allegedly loaned money to people to gamble
and sent threatening messages and put GPS trackers on them
when the money wasn't paid back.
Prosecutors also say Jared Amos' dual Greek citizenship
and images of him in Greece
with who they say is a known fugitive that fled
to that country makes him a flight risk.
Jared Amos' attorney, though, is still arguing for his release,
saying at that early September hearing
nearly all 22 of the defendants are already out
on bond that the federal government is trying to
make Jared Amos out to be some kind of mob boss
and he's just not because Jimmy Jared Amos isn't
a dangerous person i mean the the big problem
with this case writ large is that the government
has overcharged it and they've exaggerated what we got
is a bunch of guys that like gambling too
much and the United States government
and the U.S. Attorney's Office here treats him like Jimmy
Jared Demos as Tony Soprano. Well, he's not.
Now, when that federal judge did grant Jared Demos
a pretrial release last month,
those conditions were he had about a $5 million bond. He and his
family would have to turn in their passports.
Jared Demos would be limited to house arrest
and have an electronic monitor.
But again, the federal government stepped in and put a stay
on that release. And we'll find out at about 10 o'clock today whether
or not he'll be released
ahead of bond, guys. I'll send it back to you for now.
All right, Brittany, thanks for breaking
that down. I know there's a lot of moving parts
in this case to say the very least,
so we will check back this morning as well. All right, 7:30.
