AI GeneratedThe New York Rangers provide key updates ahead of their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, including a surprising revelation regarding Jonas Korpisalo's injury and the emergence of Alexei Lafrenière. The team also manages roster changes and mourns the loss of franchise legend Ron Duguay.
The Rangers just gave us multiple new updates ahead
of their next game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
And yes, it includes a goaltender, his future with the team,
and a defenseman that was listed as questionable.
As most of you remember, this summer, the Rangers went out
and got Jonas Korpisalo to back up Igor Shesterkin.
Then Igor Shosturkin went down with a season-ending injury,
and Korpisalo, he still hasn't played a game yet.
For weeks, the team has been saying that it's just
a regular lower body injury and he'll be out for a month.
but we're halfway through that timeline and he still hasn't skated.
And that's not the only update before this next game against the Leafs.
We have a special teams battle for the ages.
We get a big update on Sean Durzi and Mike Sullivan,
head coach of the Rangers, spoke out on Alexi Lafreniere.
We're going to get into all of that and much more
on this episode of Rangers Digest.
But before we do that, a quick reminder to hit that subscribe button.
We are currently just over 12,000 subscribers.
and thank you so much for the support here on the channel,
but I am giving away a jersey here
to one lucky subscriber when we hit either 15,000 subscribers
or the Rangers make the playoffs,
whatever comes first, and right now the Rangers
are second in the Metropolitan Division and
absolutely rolling. Let's get into the update on Jonas Korpisalo.
On October 9th, Igor Shesterkin
goes down with that season-ending injury in Washington,
and he's done for the year. That
should have been Korpisalo's moment
but instead he went on injured reserve right away and for weeks
the only word we got was that it was a lower body injury
and when asked even head coach Mike Sullivan
didn't know what the injury was well
this morning we finally get an answer from the Athletic and
from Peter Baugh and Vince Marcogliano's report
that according to a person briefed on the matter
the 32 year old has been unable to play
because of a foot infection not a real regular injury that
you'd see from a goaltender like a pulled groin
or something like that no a foot infection that
is stopping him from skating
and we're now two weeks into that four-week timeline so i'm not
so sure that this is now a four-week thing at this point
and maybe that's why trade rumors continue
to escalate for the rangers not because they're trying
to replace how good Dylan Gardiner has been
this season, but maybe
because the backup plan for the whole time this offseason has now gone
right in the toilet and Jonas Korpisalo might
not even have a timeline to return. But like I
mentioned, there is some good news to this.
Dylan Gardiner is playing very well. He's 4-2-1 with a
929 save percentage and a 5.3 goals saved above expected
per evolving hockey. And like I said,
the trade talk is getting very interesting.
The Athletic piece is really about whether
Connor Hellebuck could change the Rangers' plans.
That is seeming very unlikely, and TSN's Darren
Dreger says there have been conversations with Winnipeg,
but no sense of urgency.
The other names out there right now
are Ukko Peltonen from the Buffalo Sabres and Karel
Vemelka from the Utah Mammoth,
but entering play on Wednesday night, both of them were under an
880 save percentage with a negative goal saved above expected,
and Girard is outplaying the guys
that you would trade for in this scenario.
So guys, let me know in the comments, are you worried
about this situation?
I feel like the Rangers, if Korbas Laios is out long-term, do absolutely
actually have to go out and trade for a goaltender.
Before we get into the other updates on today's
video, one of the strangest things about getting older
is that your recovery, your stamina,
your focus is not quite what it used to be.
But it's a decline that is so gradual that you don't
notice until it is far too late.
And that is exactly where Mars Men comes into play. Mars
Men uses clinically dosed ingredients like vitamin D,
zinc, boron, and a few others to naturally
support testosterone, energy, and stamina.
I've noticed that personally, Mars Men really helps
with recovery as I continue to get older I love
to play sports I love to stay active and recovery
is just not what it used to be we are not 12
or 13 years old anymore and you can bounce back in a
couple hours or maybe a day it's not the same
and Mars Men is not just a one-time energy booster
like taking caffeine or something like
that it really gives you a substantial boost and lasts
for a long time for a limited time

with the New York Rangers. And at
checkout, they're going to ask you how you found their product.
Let them know that Darius at Rangers
Digest sent you. Now let's get into some updates
on a game that has major implications for both
teams. Molly Walker confirmed this morning
that Dylan Girard is in goal tonight for the Rangers
against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
We also got some other good news as it was speculated yesterday
that Sean Dursey may not play. He is actually okay.
He blocked a shot near the wrist on Monday
against Anaheim and left the game,
but Mike Sullivan says he's ready to play tonight after
a maintenance day yesterday.
Here's how the lineup shapes up tonight per NHL.com. Perro is with
Zibanejad and Lafreniere on the top line once again.
Gavrikov and Fox are your starters on defense,
And rookie Albert Schmidt, by the way, who was told to get a house,
is with Braden Schneider, and he is on the team full-time.
Scott Morrow and Matt Rempe are your scratches.
Heading into this game tonight,
the Rangers are 7-3-1 second in the Metropolitan Division.
The Leafs are 5-4-2 fifth in the Atlantic Division.
But as Andrei Leal pointed out tonight, this is a special teams matchup.
matchup, there's one thing in particular
that will dictate how this game goes. Two of the best
penalty kills in the entire league.
Toronto is first at 97.4% and the Rangers are right behind
them in second with 94.1% on the kill.
Where the problem lies for the New York Rangers is the
power play. They are 18th in the league at 20.6%
and Toronto has the fifth best power play at 27.5%.
So the Rangers absolutely have to stay out of the box tonight.
This game could come down to special teams.
The Leafs kill off almost every single penalty.
The Rangers power play has not been connecting.
And if the Rangers go down a man,
the Leafs power play is looking lethal.
Speaking of lethal, the man to watch on the other side
in Toronto tonight is Austin Matthews,
who leads their team in points with 18 points
so far through the first couple of games of the season.
and the player to watch for the Rangers the man
that Mike Sullivan cannot stop talking great about
the Rangers are in Canada for tonight's game
so naturally there's a lot of Alexi Lafreniere talk
and Mike Sullivan said that he
is evolving tremendously Mike Sullivan said and I quote
I think he's opened up or developed other aspects
of his offensive game in particular his grind game
down low in the offensive zone he's always been a guy
that's been dangerous off the rush and Mike
Sullivan was pointing to the question
that everybody really asked. What happens if that
rush offense dries up? What do you do then?
How do you produce offense? So far, Alexi Lafreniere
has answered the bell. Lafreniere has seven goals
and 13 points through 11 games, and he leads the
Rangers in both categories.
Nobody else on the team has more than four goals. Adam Fox is next
in points with 10. This is a player that time and time again,
I say that everyone has been waiting
to become a superstar it's happening right now
this is for real there's tangible evidence and
he's on a big stage tonight in Toronto to continue
this hot streak a couple last updates i want to
get to including rookie Albert Schmitz
and i kind of mentioned this earlier in the video but really
exciting for him in that new report this morning
from the Athletic it reports that Schmitz has
moved out of a hotel and into his own home near
the team's practice facility and here's why that
matters. The Rangers typically give young players
the go-ahead to get their own place
only when they expect them to stay in the NHL
for the rest of the season. He was the player with the
highest floor in the NHL draft. He's 18 years old.
He was drafted fifth overall, the highest drafted
Latvian in history. And now it looks like he
is going to be a staple on this Rangers blue line
for a long, long time. Just as an example of how well
this team is feeling right now, as per Molly
Walker a well-attended morning skate
this morning 17 guys including Mika Zibanejad JT Miller
Lafreniere's line mate Perreault and Luke Glendening
who they signed the other day and many people are
starting to ask the question
and Molly Walker answered it if we will see Glendening soon
her answer they will have to sign him first
because he's still on a PTO so that's why he's
not with the team well he is with the team he signed
a professional tryout on Monday he can
practice with them but he can't play
a regular season game until he gets a real contract he is
37 and he had nine points in 70 games last season
but he's a great penalty killer and he's a great
face-off guy i imagine he's eventually going
to get a contract for those skills that he brings
to the table but guys let me know
in the comments how you feel about that and let's get some score
predictions going in the comments below
because i think it's actually going to be a very tight
game between these two teams.
Now, before I go, I would be remiss if I did not mention this as
Rangers fans got some bad news this morning.
Ron Duguay has passed away at the age of 69.
If you're a younger Rangers fan, here's who he was.
The Rangers took him 13th overall in 1977.
He played eight seasons in New York
and was on the team that made the 1979 Stanley Cup final.
Across his whole career, he scored 274 goals in 860 games,
and as Vince Mancagliano pointed out,
he still ranks 25th on the Rangers franchise all-time goals list.
In a quote from the Rangers post this morning, quote,
Ron's signature skating style with his hair flowing
as he moved down the ice captivated the Garden faithful.
And Mike Sullivan opened his morning availability
this morning talking about him because he actually played with Ron.
He said, quote, I had the privilege to play with Ron
as a teammate for a year in the International Hockey League,
a great man and a terrific hockey player.
On behalf of all Rangers fans,
our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Ron.
Rest in peace. And he will be a Ranger forever.
