This Hispanic Heritage Month,
we are spotlighting a sweet business with a powerful story.
Angie Rodriguez is live at a Latina-owned business
that's back open after a family health battle.
She's at Sweet Tooth Snack Stand.
Where is this at?
Hey, Delon, we are in Highlands, in the Highlands.
That's on the east side of the Houston area,
for any people who aren't familiar.
This place opened just a few months ago.
I'm joined with the owner, Mercedes Maldonado.
First and foremost, congratulations.
Thank you.
Such a beautiful space first and foremost,
it is absolutely gorgeous in here.
Tell us, what are some of the things that you offer first
and foremost? Coffee, there's food.
Cafecitos, acai bowls,
elotes, nachos, matcha.
Hi, a lot of special guests today, definitely for sure.
It's such a special moment
for you too, right? So tell me what exactly this space means to you.
You had originally your own
snack little story going on you had to take a break
but then you came back tell
me about your story I started
with a snack cart three years ago and I would
have a lot of clients asking me for actual storefront
and then that's how we
got inspired and started opening
our actual storefront brick-and-mortar place
so we can have someone for all the guests
that will customers that would
asked for the shop so we're here now
so excited with mixed emotions and i hope people come by and
give us a try yeah what is you have a special moment here
with your mom right we were talking
about it earlier i just want you to tell me
the significance behind that break that you had to
take before i took a break um i wanted to take care
of her i wanted to be with her and enjoy her
as much as i can and now whenever she passed you
were able to start this this snack stand
the snack cart i started with the snack cart i needed
to have my mind occupied even though i
just had my baby i needed to have my mind occupied since i
was so close to her and i told my husband
one day let's just start with a snack cart
so that's what we started and we named it Sweet Too
to something different, something so it can be identical,
like a little sweet craving.
And then now we're here with the storefront.
And I love it because we were talking earlier
and you were telling your customers,
you know, one day we're going to have the storefront.
One day we're going to have the storefront.
And now we're here.
Now we're here.
And you have your storefront.
Yes, we are.
How important is this for especially representación in our comunidad,
like as Latinas here in Houston?
And how cool is it to say that, yeah, I'm the owner of this place.
It was amazing.
Beautiful, thank you so much for talking with us this morning and
thank you for sharing your story.
Thank you for stopping by.
We'll have plenty more coming up
on Fox Local at 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock noon.
So make sure you stay tuned right here.
Angie Rodriguez, Fox26 News.
