A good sturdy vintage card table is super handy
to have on hand when you need extra
space in a jiffy, however their appearance may
not be where you wish it to be.
Here's a great fix for that.
The key to making this idea work for a table top
is to choose boards that are all the same
depth so the surface remains as flat as possible.
I sourced enough planks to cover the top
of the table with some overlap to create more
of a farmhouse table look.
After measuring the table size,
I transferred that measurement to the top of the boards,
plus adding an extra inch to create a frame that would clear the table,
but still be smaller
than the top boards.
I cut four pickets for the frame,
then gave them a good sanding to remove any chippy paint.
The frame pieces were laid out on the floor,
rotating each end so I ended up with a perfect
square shape.
Marking the overlap along each corner,
I pre-drilled holes within that mark, then attached the
corners with screws using short gentle pumps
to avoid splitting the wood. I then placed the frame
on top of the top boards
and marked the overlap to be the same on all four sides. The top planks
were then cut to all the same size using a miter saw.
Now that the first board is properly aligned
I'm going to go by this board so I know where to insert the screws.
The top planks were then
positioned on top of the frame
then one at a time attached to the frame with screws while gently
tapping them into position using
a rubber mallet to tighten up the fit.
So the reason I am pumping
my drill really slow is to avoid this happening.
I went too fast and just drove the screw right in
and it split the wood.
So if you pump it slow, it's just about like it takes its time to work
into the wood making room.
Another trick you can do is you can insert the screw part ways, take it
out and go all the way in but still slowly
and it's just about kind of like a pre-drilling effect
now it's starting to get exciting because it's turning out
so cool where did this old little
table come from i made it
an old table i have
an old table now i'm going
to test out how heavy it
is very doable i wouldn't want to carry them
together but separately is great this is a
beautiful little table as is.
It's beautifully neutral so you can use it anywhere you wish.
However, I'm going to take it one step further
to show you a way that you can flip a plain piece
into a statement piece.
I measured the size of one board on the table then unrolled a tube of
pretty shelf and drawer liner I landed from the dollar store,
cutting it to the board size using
a cutting mat. The liner was then applied to one
of the boards then trimmed at each end. Two other
Other boards were taped off,
then one board was painted in Infusions Cast Iron and the
other in Infusions Casement to blend
with the patterned liner paper.
Then after removing the tape,
the card table and top was carried upstairs into my office.
Being able to carry both pieces separately made for much lighter work.
Then after arranging a few office supplies in place,
my new paperwork desk was ready
to perform while looking gorgeous doing it.
What I love most about the table is the style.
The rustic wood is such a neat juxtaposition to the pattern
and painted stripes which helps
to dress it up.
Plus the painted and liner paper have an added bonus.
You can set a drink on either one
to better protect the table top from water rings.
Want the boards back to wood?
The liner can be removed instantly,
plus you can even unscrew and flip over the painted
boards going back to all wood if desired.
The options are all yours.
This table has ample dedicated space for my paperwork,
even clearing a rolling file cart
underneath.
While it's mighty handy in my office,
this little table could be styled and used anywhere.
This office is located in a spare bedroom,
and while it's perfect for my computer on
the other side of the room, it didn't have enough room to do paperwork.
So this paperwork desk is gorgeous, it fits,
and I didn't anticipate needing a card table
until now. And I'm thankful I have one.
Cheers to that.
