Twenty-eight caves discovered on a 500-meter-high cliff deep in the mountains of China! How was this Taoist temple built?

Nestled deep within the mountains of Hebei, perched on a sheer cliff over 500 meters high, lies a vast and mysterious complex of Taoist caves. Shrines and pavilions are arranged in multiple levels along the cliff face, connected by walkways that hang over the abyss. From a distance, the entire complex appears to be embedded directly into the mountainside. This is the famous Xiangguang Caves. Legend says that construction of the Xiangguang Caves began during the Northern Wei Dynasty, with a history spanning over 1,600 years; folklore also recounts the story of Wei Zheng – the renowned prime minister of the Tang Dynasty – who lived in seclusion here to practice Taoism. Today, this unique complex of Taoist caves, perched precariously on the cliff, is still preserved. There are twenty-eight caves distributed along the sheer cliff, each with its own distinct beauty, creating a truly spectacular scene. Join us as we explore this thousand-year-old complex of Taoist temples and caves, nestled high amidst towering cliffs. 00:00 Introduction
